Use OCI Monitoring for cloud-side charts and alerts, then SSH into the VPS for live Linux readings. If you need memory charts in OCI, enable and verify the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin: the agent-based oci_computeagent namespace includes both CpuUtilization and MemoryUtilization. The separate agentless namespace provides hypervisor-measured CPU, not the documented memory metric. Record resource use during a representative stream before deciding what counts as unusual for your machine.
Choose the right view for the question
OCI Monitoring gives you a cloud-side view of instance metrics over time and can evaluate alarms against those metrics. Linux commands over SSH show the operating system’s current view, including process-level context. Use both: a chart can show when a change occurred, while local tools can help identify what is consuming resources at that moment.
| Approach | What it shows | Requirement and timing |
|---|---|---|
OCI agent-based metrics, oci_computeagent |
CPU, memory, load average, and memory allocation stalls | Compute Instance Monitoring plugin enabled and running; documented metric cadence is 60 seconds. [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics] |
OCI agentless metrics, oci_vmi_resource_utilization |
Hypervisor-measured CPU utilization | No Oracle Cloud Agent monitoring tools required; the published table lists 3–4 minute granularity. It does not provide the cited memory metric. [Oracle Agentless Compute Metrics] |
| Linux over SSH | Current host statistics and, with tools such as top, process context |
SSH access; readings are local to the host. iostat, mpstat, and sar are available through sysstat on Oracle Linux. [Oracle Linux 9 Monitoring and Tuning] |
Set up OCI charts for CPU and memory
- Open the instance: in the OCI Console, navigate to the Compute instance you use for streaming.
- Check the plugin: for agent-based metrics, make sure Oracle Cloud Agent is installed where required and the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin is enabled and running. The instance also needs a public IP or service gateway to send metric data to OCI Monitoring. [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics]
- Open the charts: on the instance page, select Metrics under Resources, then choose the
oci_computeagentnamespace. Charts containing data confirm that Monitoring is receiving metrics. - Inspect the relevant metrics: check
CpuUtilizationandMemoryUtilization. OCI definesMemoryUtilizationas the percentage of used pages in the instance. The namespace also includesLoadAverageandMemoryAllocationStalls; stalls can be a reason to investigate memory pressure, but they are a count, not a percentage of RAM. [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics]
Understand what the chart cadence means
Oracle documents agent-based metrics at a 60-second cadence: data points are sampled every ten seconds and batched six at a time every minute. The agentless hypervisor CPU metric is listed at 3–4 minute granularity. These are different collection methods and resolutions, so do not treat their charts as interchangeable or compare them as if they were one continuous series. Use the agent-based namespace when you need the documented memory metric. [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics] [Oracle Agentless Compute Metrics]
If you only need cloud-side CPU
The oci_vmi_resource_utilization namespace reports hypervisor-measured CpuUtilization without requiring Oracle Cloud Agent monitoring tools. Oracle describes it as useful for minute-level CPU monitoring, while its metric table lists a 3–4 minute granularity and cautions that public and private agentless metrics can differ in granularity or resolution. Do not use this namespace as a substitute for the agent-based memory chart. [Oracle Agentless Compute Metrics]

Check the VPS directly over SSH
Connect to the instance with your usual SSH method, then run the command that matches the question you are investigating. Some slim OCI images may not include all of these utilities by default; check package availability on the actual image before installing anything. Oracle Linux documents free, top, and vmstat, and identifies iostat, mpstat, and sar in the sysstat package. [Oracle Linux 9 Monitoring and Tuning]
freegives a memory summary. Read the fields as a snapshot of memory use, not as a performance verdict on their own.toprefreshes a system and process view, useful for checking which processes are active while the stream is running.vmstatreports virtual-memory statistics and helps you observe changes over time.mpstatreports processor-related statistics.sarrecords system activity; both are provided bysysstaton Oracle Linux.
For a quick live check, use top to see the current process and system view, and free for a memory summary. Use repeated readings or OCI history to understand a trend rather than drawing a conclusion from one snapshot.

Build a baseline during a real stream
Oracle recommends measuring typical operation first so later memory shortages, resource spikes, or performance changes can be recognized against a baseline. For this use case, collect readings during a representative stream and compare startup, sustained operation, and quiet periods. This is a way to apply Oracle’s baseline recommendation, not a published streaming benchmark. [Oracle Linux 9 Monitoring and Tuning]
- Start with a normal streaming session, not an unusually light test.
- Note the relevant OCI CPU and memory charts, including the namespace and chart cadence.
- Use SSH tools to inspect current readings and active processes during startup and sustained streaming.
- Record ordinary readings at comparable points on later runs. Investigate meaningful changes in context rather than applying a universal cutoff.
The sources cited here do not establish a safe CPU percentage, a minimum free-memory floor, or a CPU/RAM threshold specific to YouTube streaming. Your instance shape, image, plugin state, stream workload, and operating conditions affect what is normal; set expectations from your own observations rather than an unsupported generic target.

Set an OCI alarm after you know what is normal
OCI Monitoring alarms evaluate status once per minute and can send messages to configured destinations, including OCI Notifications or Streaming depending on configuration. Choose a metric and trigger that reflect a meaningful change from your observed baseline, then configure the destination where you want to receive the alert. Oracle documents the alert mechanism but does not prescribe CPU or memory alarm thresholds for YouTube streaming. [Oracle Overview of Monitoring]
- Choose the agent-based metric you need, such as
CpuUtilizationorMemoryUtilization. - Set the trigger based on the behavior you want to catch, using your measured workload as context.
- Configure a notification destination and verify that the notification path works.
- Review whether the alarm is useful during subsequent representative runs and adjust it if it produces irrelevant alerts or misses conditions you intended to catch.
Troubleshoot missing or confusing readings
- No agent-based charts or data: verify Oracle Cloud Agent installation where required, that the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin is enabled and running, and that the instance has a public IP or service gateway for metric delivery. Then check the
oci_computeagentnamespace again. [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics] - CPU appears but memory does not: confirm that you selected
oci_computeagent. The cited agentless namespace supplies CPU, not the documentedMemoryUtilizationmetric. [Oracle Agentless Compute Metrics] [Oracle Compute Instance Metrics] - OCI CPU and SSH readings do not line up: check which OCI namespace you are viewing and account for its collection method and cadence. Agentless hypervisor measurements and in-guest agent measurements are not identical time series. A local command is also a host-level reading, not the same charting path.
- A command is unavailable: check the operating system image and installed packages. Oracle notes that slim OCI images may need
procps-ngforfree,top, andvmstat;iostat, mpstat, andsarare supplied bysysstaton Oracle Linux. Confirm availability for your image before using package-install commands. [Oracle Linux 9 Monitoring and Tuning] - An alarm does not notify you: check its configured destination and verify the notification path. Alarm evaluation is once per minute, so it is not a substitute for a continuously refreshing local view. [Oracle Overview of Monitoring]
