If a YouTube Live replay is silent after you switch videos in OBS, first find out where the audio disappears: OBS monitoring, the live stream, or only the saved replay. Those are separate outputs, and a moving Audio Mixer meter alone does not prove that YouTube received or saved the sound.
First, pinpoint which output is silent
While the video is playing, check the relevant source in OBS’s Audio Mixer, then test each output separately. Note the results before changing settings:
- OBS monitoring: Can you hear the source through the selected monitoring device?
- Live stream: If the stream is available, does its audio play?
- Recorded replay: Does the saved YouTube event replay contain audio?
These checks distinguish a local listening problem from a streaming or replay problem. One silent output does not establish that the others are silent too. OBS’s Audio Mixer guide explains the mixer and its monitoring controls. A responding meter shows audio reaching the mixer; it does not confirm that a monitoring device, streaming output, or replay is receiving it.
Use the meter result to choose what to check next
If the source meter does not respond
Focus on the source and its playback after switching. Confirm that the video is playing and that the audio source is present in the mixer. For a Media Source, inspect its activation settings in the source properties.

If the meter responds but OBS monitoring is silent
Check the selected monitoring device and the source’s monitoring configuration. A meter can move even if the chosen device is unavailable, muted, or otherwise not delivering sound to your ears.
If the meter responds but the stream or replay is silent
Check whether the source is routed to the audio track used for streaming. A meter response does not show that the source is assigned to the right output track. Compare the live stream with the replay: if the live stream has audio but the replay does not, keep the investigation focused on the replay rather than assuming OBS monitoring failed.

Check how the video source behaves when you switch
For an OBS Media Source, inspect the options “Restart playback when source becomes active” and “Close file when inactive.” OBS documents that closing a file while its source is inactive frees memory, but may cause a brief delay when the source appears again. Check whether the source reloads or resumes as expected after you switch back. These settings are useful diagnostic checks, not a confirmed fix for every silent replay.
If you use VLC Video Source, check its audio track and installation
In the VLC Video Source properties, verify that the intended audio track is selected. OBS says this source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the track or VLC installation does not match, correct that before diagnosing a wider OBS problem. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.

What an OBS 32.0.2 report can—and cannot—tell you
An issue report for OBS 32.0.2 describes a reporter who could hear VLC source audio locally and see mixer activity while the stream had no audio. That is an individual report, not confirmation of a general OBS defect or proof that your replay has the same cause. Your OBS version, operating system, source type, track assignment, and meter behavior all matter. See the OBS Studio issue tracker for the report and its status.
Practical troubleshooting order
- Play the video and observe its Audio Mixer meter.
- Test OBS monitoring, the live stream, and the saved replay separately; record which ones are silent.
- If the meter is inactive, check that the source is playing and inspect Media Source activation behavior.
- If the meter moves, confirm the audio track used for streaming and, if only monitoring fails, the selected monitoring device.
- If you use VLC Video Source, verify the selected audio track and that VLC’s bitness matches OBS.
- Switch videos again and repeat the three output checks to see whether the symptom follows a specific source or occurs only after switching.
