How to Monitor an FFmpeg YouTube Stream with systemd and journalctl

Use systemd for local process supervision, journalctl for FFmpeg diagnostics, and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the stream is actually reaching YouTube.

Use systemd to supervise FFmpeg, systemctl to check the service, and journalctl to inspect its output. Then verify the stream separately in YouTube Live Control Room: a service can be active on your machine while YouTube is receiving no usable video.

What you need to monitor

There are three separate checks. Each answers a different question, so none replaces the others.

  • systemd service state: Is the service running, stopped, or failing on this host?
  • Journal entries: What did systemd and FFmpeg report, including errors before a failure or restart?
  • YouTube ingest health: Is YouTube receiving the expected stream and showing a preview or healthy status in Live Control Room?

FFmpeg can remain running while using an unreadable input, an incorrect destination, or a rejected stream key. Conversely, a process exit does not by itself identify whether the root cause was the file, the network, the key, or another setting. Diagnose across all three layers.

Get the current YouTube ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Retrieve that stream’s current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube may initially show an RTMP option; select or reveal RTMPS in the control room if you intend to use RTMPS.
  3. Use the URL and key as provided for that stream. Do not assume a fixed ingest endpoint. Depending on the encoder interface, URL and key may be separate fields or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
  4. Protect the key. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, source repository, or logs. Restrict access to credentials on the host according to your local security policy. An environment file is not automatically secret merely because it has that name.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Choose a protocol supported by your FFmpeg build and compatible with the current ingest URL shown in Live Control Room. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your host if an option or protocol behaves differently from current online documentation.

Run FFmpeg as a foreground systemd service

Let systemd supervise the foreground FFmpeg process rather than placing it in the background with shell-specific tricks. FFmpeg reads an input and writes to an output URL; the correct options depend on the media source, output protocol, and YouTube settings. The example below is a template, not a copy-and-run command: replace every placeholder with values appropriate to your input and the current broadcast.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/media
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv <CURRENT_INGEST_URL_AND_KEY>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Save a service unit under an appropriate systemd unit-file location for your distribution, for example /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. The sample uses -re to read a file at its native rate and FLV output for an RTMP-family destination, following FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-RTMP pattern. It uses stream copy only as an illustrative choice; it will not work if the source codecs or stream parameters are unsuitable for the destination. Choose encoding, audio, video, and input options for the actual file and ingest requirements. Do not put a real key in a shared unit example.

Load, enable, and start the unit

  1. After creating or changing the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload so systemd reads the updated unit definition.
  2. Start it with sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  3. Check the current state with systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  4. If you want it to start automatically when the host boots, enable it with sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service. Starting a service now and enabling it at boot are separate actions.

Type=simple suits a service whose main process is the foreground FFmpeg command. Confirm service directives and behavior against the systemd version installed on your host.

Choose restart behavior deliberately

The example uses Restart=on-failure with a ten-second delay. Treat both settings as operational policy, not universal defaults. A restart policy can help recover from specified abnormal exits, kills, or timeouts; it does not fix a bad key, missing file, invalid command, incompatible media, network outage, or rejected ingest. Repeated retries can keep repeating a persistent error.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Use retries when: an unexpected process failure is plausibly temporary and restarting the stream is an appropriate recovery action.
  • Choose a delay that fits the workload: a delay can avoid rapid repeated restarts, but the right interval depends on the host and service.
  • Inspect the first failure before changing policy: use the journal to find the original FFmpeg error rather than simply increasing retries or shortening the delay.
  • Know the stop semantics: systemd does not apply the automatic restart policy to an intentional stop or restart requested through the manager.

For production use, decide how to handle repeated failures and who will investigate them; automatic restart alone is not an end-to-end monitoring plan.

Check service state and read FFmpeg logs

Inspect the current state

systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service

This gives a current local view of the unit and often includes recent log lines. It does not establish that YouTube is receiving the stream.

Read recent journal entries

sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager

The -u option filters entries for the named unit; -n 100 requests the latest 100 entries. Increase or reduce the count as needed. The journal contains only entries that were recorded and retained on that system.

Follow new entries live

sudo journalctl -f -u ffmpeg-youtube.service

Use this while starting the service or investigating a live failure. Press Ctrl+C to stop following the journal; this exits the log viewer, not the service.

Filter by time or boot when useful

When a problem is tied to a specific period or reboot, use the time- and boot-filtering options supported by the host’s journalctl. Exact options can vary with systemd versions and distributions; consult man journalctl locally. The documented -u and live-follow behavior is described in the systemd 255 manual, but a host may ship another version.

Verify that YouTube is receiving the stream

  1. Open the relevant broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check whether the control room detects the incoming stream and whether its preview or health indicators show the expected result.
  3. Compare that remote status with the service state and FFmpeg’s recent journal output.
  4. If the local service is active but YouTube has no preview or reports a problem, check the input file, FFmpeg output and arguments, current destination URL, corresponding key, protocol compatibility, and broadcast state in the control room.

The YouTube API documents primary and backup RTMPS ingestion addresses. Use the address and key associated with the current stream configuration rather than assuming that a remembered endpoint is still correct. A local active status or continuing FFmpeg process is not proof of successful remote ingest.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

Symptom What to check Next action
Unit fails immediately Recent entries from journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager; unit command, executable path, working directory, and input path. Correct the first reported command, permission, or input error, reload the unit if its definition changed, then start it again.
Unit is active, but Live Control Room shows no incoming stream Whether FFmpeg can read the input; the output arguments and protocol; the current ingest URL and matching key; the selected broadcast’s state. Read FFmpeg’s journal output alongside the control-room status. Do not infer a YouTube-side fault from local logs alone.
FFmpeg exits and systemd retries The earliest FFmpeg error and the unit’s configured Restart= and RestartSec= values. Fix the underlying input, configuration, or connection issue before tuning the retry policy. A restart cannot repair a persistent cause.
Stream works interactively but not as a service The service’s working directory, executable path, file permissions, and access to the input and required credentials. Make the service’s paths and permissions valid for its service context; do not assume the interactive shell’s environment is available to systemd.
Logs do not show expected output The unit name used in the journal filter, whether the service actually ran, and local journal retention and permissions. Check systemctl status, confirm the exact unit name, and consult the host’s journalctl manual.
