Set chat controls before you go live, give trusted people the right moderator role, and use a clear response ladder during the broadcast. Afterward, decide whether to keep chat replay and use YouTube’s chat history when you need to review a conversation. YouTube’s labels and controls can vary by device and stream type, so confirm the options in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room for your broadcast.
Before going live: choose the right chat controls
In YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, review the live chat settings for the specific stream. Use the controls according to the problem you want to prevent or manage:

A proportionate escalation ladder is a practical starting point: use blocked words and trusted moderators first, enable slow mode if messages are arriving too quickly, restrict participation if the stream needs a narrower audience, then use timeouts or hide individual users. Turn chat off if necessary. This is guidance for choosing controls, not a YouTube-mandated sequence.
Check audience and viewing conditions
If a video or stream is set as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, among other features; there may be no chat to moderate. Live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. Viewers are limited by YouTube to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message up to 200 characters; creators cannot adjust those platform-side limits.

Assign moderators and agree on expectations
YouTube has standard and managing moderator roles. Assign people you trust and agree beforehand on what warrants removal, a timeout, or hiding a user. A short shared policy helps moderators make consistent decisions when the stream is moving quickly.

Keep the distinction in mind when delegating: a managing moderator can adjust chat controls, but does not receive access to the channel’s Studio or Live Control Room.

During the stream: review messages and respond proportionately
Use held messages as a queue, not a guarantee
When YouTube holds a potentially inappropriate message, an owner or managing moderator can choose to show or hide it. If nobody acts, it remains hidden. YouTube cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” Human review still matters, particularly when a message needs context or a decision about whether it belongs in the conversation.
Choose the action that fits the behavior
- Remove a message when the content should disappear from chat but you do not need to block the person from sending future messages.
- Use a timeout when a user should be temporarily prevented from sending messages.
- Hide the user when their chat messages and comments should be invisible to other viewers without notifying them.
- Change chat controls or turn chat off if the volume or disruption is beyond what moderators can manage. A managing moderator can change participant mode or message delay, or switch live chat off.
To act on a particular message, a moderator selects it to open the available actions. Check the controls on your device and stream type; YouTube’s interface may differ.

After the stream: decide what viewers can replay
YouTube turns live chat replay on by default for stream archives. You can disable it in the video’s customization settings. Viewers can inspect chats they participated in through Live chat history. Deleting a Super Chat message after the stream does not result in a refund.
