Match an upload to the frame rate at which its source was recorded or produced—not to an arbitrary default such as 30 fps or to a rate guessed from a YouTube playlist. Inspect the actual video file, decide whether conversion is needed, and use FFmpeg’s fps filter only when you need to resample frames to a specific constant cadence.
Which frame rate should you use for a YouTube video?
YouTube’s upload guidance is to encode and upload recorded content at the frame rate used during recording. Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates are acceptable too. The troubleshooting guidance also recognizes rates such as 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. These are examples, not a requirement to convert every video to one of them.
A playlist page does not establish the original frame rate. YouTube may serve a transcoded version, and the playlist title, displayed resolution, or customary settings are not reliable evidence of the source cadence. Use the original recording or production master when available. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings provide the matching-rate guidance.

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=avg_frame_rate,r_frame_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4
The output reports avg_frame_rate and r_frame_rate. They may differ, particularly with variable-frame-rate material. These metadata values are useful clues, but neither should be treated as conclusive proof of the camera’s recording cadence when timestamps or production context indicate otherwise. If you control the original recording, check its recording settings or export history as well.

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_frames -show_entries frame=best_effort_timestamp_time -of csv=p=0 input.mp4
Compare successive timestamps across the clip rather than relying on one reported average, especially if the file may be variable frame rate. The exact cadence can vary within such a file.
Decide whether you need frame-rate conversion
If the source already has the intended cadence and your edit preserves its timestamps, avoid gratuitous conversion. Re-encoding solely to label a file with a different frame rate does not make the motion originate at that new cadence.

Convert only when your delivery workflow requires a particular constant output rate or when an edit needs a common cadence. If the target differs from the source, FFmpeg must sample the motion differently: frames may be duplicated or dropped. The visual effect depends on the rate relationship and the content.
Use the fps filter for a constant output cadence
The fps video filter creates constant-frame-rate output by using presentation timestamps to copy, duplicate, or drop input frames, and it assigns new output timestamps. For example, to create output at 30000/1001 fps:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30000/1001" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a copy output.mp4
Replace 30000/1001 with the measured or deliberately chosen target rate. The example’s H.264 encoding, quality setting, and audio stream copy are illustrative choices, not universal recommendations. Choose codecs and quality settings for your project and target container. The FFmpeg fps filter documentation describes the filter’s timestamp-based behavior.
When is -r appropriate?
Output -r does not mean the same thing in every FFmpeg workflow. During video encoding, it can cause frames to be duplicated or dropped to reach a constant output rate. In streamcopy mode, it signals a frame rate to the muxer but does not change the frame data; if that signal conflicts with the actual timestamp-derived rate, the resulting file may be invalid.

| Workflow | What output -r does |
Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding video | Can duplicate or drop frames to achieve the requested constant output rate. | Use it only when that conversion is intended. The fps filter makes the frame-resampling step explicit. |
Streamcopy (-c:v copy) |
Signals a rate to the muxer; it does not resample or alter the copied frame data. | Do not use it as a metadata-only fix for a mismatch with the timestamps. |
The FFmpeg project documents this distinction in its explanation of -r: encoding may duplicate or drop frames, while streamcopy does not. If you need a different cadence, perform an actual conversion rather than merely signaling a new rate.
Verify the output and watch for motion problems
- Probe the rendered file again with the FFprobe command above. Check its reported rates and consider frame timestamps if they do not agree or the source was variable frame rate.
- Compare the output duration with the source. A significant unexpected change can indicate a timestamp or processing problem.
- Watch motion near the beginning, middle, and end. Look for judder, repeated frames, or uneven movement, especially in pans and other smooth motion.
- If the output is for YouTube, make sure the chosen cadence reflects the recorded source or a deliberate delivery conversion; do not assume a common rate is automatically better.
YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance includes less common rates such as 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps among acceptable examples.
Troubleshooting common frame-rate mismatches
- FFprobe reports two different rates: the reported average and nominal values can differ, notably with variable-frame-rate content. Inspect timestamps and consult the source recording or export context before choosing a target.
- The file says 30 fps, but motion looks uneven: a reported rate alone does not confirm that frames were captured evenly at that cadence. Check frame timestamps and review the conversion or edit that produced the file.
- Motion looks duplicated or jerky after conversion: changing cadence requires dropping or duplicating frames. Recheck the selected target and compare against the source; if conversion is not required, preserve the original timing instead.
- A streamcopied file has inconsistent timing or will not play correctly: remove a rate signal that conflicts with the source timestamps and remux from the original, or perform a real frame-rate conversion by encoding.
- You are choosing between 30 and 29.97 fps: do not round a measured or established source rate to a familiar integer without a delivery reason. Use the intended rational rate, such as
30000/1001for 29.97-style cadence.
Or let it run in the cloud
Frame-rate matching is part of preparing a video file; it does not require your computer to remain on while that video runs as a YouTube live stream. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on a loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.
