If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting while you stream to YouTube, first lower the stream bitrate until it fits the upload capacity your connection can sustain during busy apartment hours. Then test Ethernet, OBS’s ingest-server selection, and network software one change at a time. A headline speed-test result is not enough: other residents can reduce the upload available to your computer.
Confirm that the problem is OBS dropping frames
Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming. An increasing counter with a yellow or red indicator points to an unstable connection between your computer and the streaming service, or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Do not confuse this with viewer-side buffering. Viewers can experience loading even when OBS reports a stable stream, because playback depends on their devices and internet connections. If your OBS connection is stable, investigate the viewer’s playback conditions separately. OBS buffering guide
Measure upload capacity during normal apartment use
Test the outbound connection, not just download speed
Run upload-speed tests at times resembling your planned broadcast, including periods when other residents are typically online. Download speed does not tell you how much outbound capacity OBS can use. YouTube advises ensuring the outbound connection can carry the stream bitrate and leaving bandwidth headroom. Use the published percentages as starting points
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. These are starting guidelines, not guarantees for a shared apartment connection: available capacity can change as residents use the network. Choose a YouTube bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations provide useful targets, but they are not a promise that a particular apartment connection can sustain them. Choose the resolution and frame rate based on stable upload capacity, rather than selecting a target simply because it looks better on paper.

These are YouTube Help’s H.264 ingestion figures; other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates have different recommendations. Check YouTube’s current table for the configuration you actually use. For RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. In OBS, adjust the output bitrate downward, then run a test stream before an important broadcast. If drops continue, reduce it again or lower resolution or frame rate; do not raise bitrate to chase image quality while the connection is already failing. Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback alongside OBS’s counter.

Isolate Wi-Fi, the ingest route, and network software
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and test under otherwise similar conditions. This checks the local computer-to-router link. A cable will not fix insufficient shared broadband capacity or an ISP-side route problem.
- Try another available ingest server. OBS recommends testing a different server to help identify whether the selected route or server is involved. Change only this setting for the comparison, then observe the dropped-frames counter.
- Check VPNs and network utilities. VPNs, security software, and network “optimization” utilities can affect connectivity. Do not leave security protection disabled. If a temporary diagnostic points to security software, configure an appropriate OBS exception and re-enable protection.
- Check drivers and physical network equipment. Update the computer’s network drivers where appropriate, and inspect the modem, router, Ethernet cable, and other network devices if the issue persists.
OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows options users have reported helpful. They are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce quality to react to connection changes, but OBS describes it as a fallback rather than a cure for the underlying network problem. OBS connection guide
Consider router priority only if you control the router
If the apartment network is overloaded and you have permission to administer its router, a supported QoS or device-priority setting may prioritize the streaming computer while the network is busy. The feature, name, and controls vary by model and firmware. TP-Link’s documentation, for example, describes device prioritization on supported models as allocating more bandwidth to the selected device when the network is overloaded. Take useful evidence to your ISP
If drops continue after testing a sustainable bitrate and isolating the local connection, record the times of the failures, upload-test results from representative busy periods, the OBS dropped-frame behavior, and the OBS log. Share that information with your ISP and ask it to investigate the connection and route. OBS identifies the network path, hardware, and ISP as possible sources of connection trouble. Frequently Asked Questions
Does lowering the bitrate reduce picture quality?
Usually, yes: a lower bitrate gives the encoder less data for the picture. If the connection cannot sustain a higher setting, a stable lower-bitrate stream may be preferable to repeated drops.
Can a speed test prove my stream will stay connected?
No. A test is a snapshot, while upload capacity on shared broadband can change with network use. Test at representative times and verify with an OBS test stream.
