For simultaneous, distinct feeds, run isolated OBS instances, verify each channel’s preview in YouTube Studio, and test the full setup under continuous workload before relying on it. OBS can keep feeds running only while the computer, network, and power remain available; for a cloud alternative, see the final section.
Plan the channel and stream layout
First decide whether you need multiple channels broadcasting at the same time or simply want separate configurations that you use at different times. For simultaneous distinct content, configure one OBS output per channel, each with that channel’s own YouTube stream and key. Keep the channel identity visible in the names of OBS profiles, scene collections, and stream entries so the destination is clear when you start or troubleshoot a feed.
YouTube distinguishes a live broadcast from the stream resource that carries its video. Google’s API documentation says each channel needs a different stream resource. A stream can be reused for up to three broadcasts when they do not overlap; if simultaneous broadcasts on one channel need different stream settings, create separate stream resources. This is an API-level explanation, not an OBS interface tutorial. See Google’s guide to broadcasts and streams.
Check that each YouTube channel can go live
Before configuring OBS, open YouTube Studio for each channel and confirm its current live-streaming eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days to enable live streaming. An active restriction cannot be bypassed by moving the stream to another channel; YouTube describes that as circumvention. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and limits because eligibility and service limits can change.

Create the broadcast and map its stream key
- Open the right channel in YouTube Studio. Switch to the channel that will carry this feed, then open its Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast.
- Get that broadcast’s encoder details. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: do not paste it into another channel’s OBS profile or share it publicly.
- Enter the destination in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the appropriate service or custom-server option, then enter the server URL and key for the matching channel. Confirm the selection before going live.
- Label the setup. Use explicit names such as “History Channel – 24/7 profile” and “History Channel – documentary scenes.” Avoid labels like “Profile 2” that make a wrong-destination mistake harder to spot.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guide for its Live Control Room workflow and details. A stream that starts in OBS is not necessarily the right public broadcast: verify the channel, title, visibility, schedule, and preview in YouTube Studio before you make the feed public.
Separate OBS settings from scenes and sources
OBS profiles and scene collections store different things. Profiles hold stream/account, video, and output settings; scene collections hold scenes and sources. OBS Project’s Profiles documentation states: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” See the official guides for Profiles and Scene Collections.

For each channel, create or select a profile with the correct destination and output configuration, and a scene collection with the intended channel’s visuals, media, and sources. Check both selections in each running OBS instance. A correctly named profile paired with the wrong scene collection can still show the wrong channel’s content.
Run simultaneous OBS instances with isolated configurations
Windows: use Portable Mode for stronger separation
OBS Portable Mode stores configuration alongside the application, allowing separate instances to use separate profiles and scene collections without cross-contamination. The official Portable Mode guide documents this setup for Windows and says it is unsupported on macOS and Linux. Follow the OBS Portable Mode guide and validate the instances before relying on them.

Launch parameters and other operating systems
OBS documents launch parameters including --multi to suppress the multiple-instance warning, --profile and --collection to select configurations at launch, and --portable for Portable Mode. Consult the OBS launch-parameters reference for exact syntax. These options do not all provide the same isolation: in particular, do not assume Portable Mode works on macOS or Linux. On those systems, use documented profile and collection selection behavior and test that running instances retain the intended settings.
For any operating system, start one instance at a time during setup. Confirm its selected profile, scene collection, stream destination, and preview before starting the next instance. Do not rely on labels alone; inspect the actual settings and destination.

Set output and test capacity rather than guessing
OBS output load depends on the scenes, encoder, resolution, frame rate, computer, and network. The sources do not establish a universal CPU, GPU, or upload-speed threshold for multiple always-on channels. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30 fps and recommends testing whether the system has enough resources. Begin with settings appropriate to your content and hardware, then test all intended outputs together at their real resolution and frame rate. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Set and verify the service/server, stream key, output, resolution, and frame rate for each channel’s output.
- Check that each instance is encoding and sending its intended feed without resource warnings or accumulating delivery problems.
- Use OBS’s reconnect option as a recovery aid for some interruptions, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.
- Leave the complete setup running long enough to observe resource use and stream health under the workload you expect to maintain.
Verify every feed in YouTube Live Control Room
After starting an output, open the matching channel’s Live Control Room and confirm that its preview shows the intended channel’s content. Check its health indicators and resolve warnings before relying on the stream. YouTube’s ingest troubleshooting documentation describes issues including unsupported H.264 video or AAC/MP3 audio alternatives, keyframes sent too infrequently, and insufficient video reaching YouTube. YouTube currently states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at the same time. Reaching either can prevent an additional stream from starting. These are platform limits, not recommended operating targets, and should be rechecked in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance before publication or deployment.
Use a preflight and recovery checklist
- Match each OBS instance to its channel and broadcast.
- Confirm the selected profile contains the correct account or server and stream key.
- Confirm the selected scene collection contains the right scenes, sources, and media paths.
- Check the broadcast’s title, visibility, and schedule in the correct YouTube Studio channel.
- Start each output separately and verify the preview in its matching Live Control Room before starting the next.
- Monitor OBS resource use and YouTube ingest or health warnings while all intended feeds are running.
- Plan for computer, network, and power interruptions. A UPS battery backup for the streaming PC and network equipment is an optional continuity measure, not a guarantee of uptime.
