OBS has no documented built-in setting that watches for new YouTube uploads and automatically adds them to a YouTube playlist. To do that, you need separate automation that identifies each eligible video and adds it through the YouTube Data API. If by “playlist” you mean local files playing in an OBS scene, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead; it does not change a YouTube playlist.
First, decide which kind of playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to two different things in this workflow:
- A local playback list in OBS: OBS’s VLC Video source plays media files in a scene. It supports loop and shuffle, requires VLC, and does not add videos to YouTube playlists. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- A YouTube playlist: a collection of YouTube video resources managed through YouTube. Adding an uploaded video to it requires a YouTube Data API request authorized for the account that can edit the playlist. See the YouTube Data API reference.
A live broadcast is a separate resource: YouTube represents a live broadcast as a video resource, while playlist membership is managed through playlist and playlist-item resources. Creating or renewing a broadcast is not the same as adding an upload to a playlist. The YouTube Live Streaming API overview describes the broadcast and stream resources.
Automatically add new uploads to a YouTube playlist
The workflow has two parts: an upload-detection step that finds the new video ID, and an authorized playlist insertion. OBS can be part of a broader setup, but it does not replace the YouTube API call.

1. Choose the destination playlist
Identify the playlist you want to update and obtain its playlist ID. YouTube’s API documentation describes playlist resources and playlist-item operations; the insertion request needs the ID of the destination playlist. Use an account with permission to manage that playlist.
2. Decide which new videos qualify
A separate script or service must discover or receive the new video ID and decide whether that upload belongs in the destination playlist. For example, it may need to distinguish documentary uploads from trailers or other channel videos. The official references cited here explain how to insert a known video, but do not provide a turnkey channel-upload trigger, a recommended polling interval, or filtering rules. Do not assume OBS is monitoring uploads for you.

3. Insert the video with the YouTube Data API
Call playlistItems.insert with an OAuth-authorized write request. The playlist item identifies the target playlist in snippet.playlistId and the video in snippet.resourceId:

The YouTube playlists implementation guide covers OAuth-authorized insertion; the API reference documents playlist-item operations, including listing and deletion. Treat authorization and the choice of destination playlist as part of the automation, not as OBS settings.

4. Connect OBS only if the wider workflow needs it
OBS supports Python and Lua scripts and a built-in WebSocket endpoint for external applications. Those are possible ways to coordinate OBS with another system, such as a streaming setup, but they do not perform playlist insertion by themselves. The API request to YouTube remains the part that edits playlist membership. See the OBS Developer Guide.
If you meant a local playlist in an OBS scene
- Install VLC, which the OBS VLC Video source requires.
- In OBS, add or select a VLC Video source in the scene where the files should play.
- Configure the source’s media list with the local files you want it to play.
- Choose whether the list should loop or shuffle, using the source’s available playback options.
This handles files available to OBS on the computer. It does not detect YouTube uploads or add videos to a YouTube playlist. For source behavior and requirements, consult the OBS Media Sources guide.

Keep playlist automation separate from live-broadcast automation
If your real goal is to keep a live broadcast running or renew it, that is a different task from adding videos to a playlist. YouTube’s Live Streaming API handles broadcast resources. The OBS forum listing for Live Stream Segmenter describes broadcast operations and automatic broadcast renewal, not automatic insertion of new uploads into a playlist.
The listing identifies Live Stream Segmenter 1.1.4, created January 13, 2026, for OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lists requirements including livestream permission, a Google Cloud project with YouTube Data API v3 enabled, and an OAuth 2.0 desktop client. Check the listing for current compatibility and requirements; this plugin is not a substitute for the playlist-insertion workflow above.

Troubleshooting the playlist workflow
- The video is not in the playlist: check that the automation found the correct video ID, used the intended playlist ID, and completed the authorized
playlistItems.insertrequest. - The write request is not authorized: confirm that the request uses OAuth authorization for an account permitted to edit the destination playlist. Playlist insertion is a write operation, not an unauthenticated OBS action.
- OBS plays files, but YouTube’s playlist did not change: the VLC Video source controls local media playback. It does not edit YouTube playlist membership.
- A broadcast renews, but no upload was added: broadcast renewal and playlist insertion are separate operations. A broadcast-management tool does not establish that new uploads are being added.
- No new video is detected: check the separate discovery or notification mechanism and its eligibility rules. The cited API and OBS documentation do not specify a turnkey upload-detection recipe or guarantee detection timing.
