Can a YouTube Live Stream Switch Between Prerecorded Videos and Scheduled Breaks?

You can switch a YouTube live program between camera and prerecorded scenes with an encoder, use Take a Break for a temporary overlay, or schedule mid-roll ad opportunities. They are separate controls.

Yes—but the method matters. To switch deliberately between a live camera, prerecorded footage, and a custom break scene, compose the program in streaming software such as OBS and switch its scenes. YouTube Live Control Room also has a separate Take a Break overlay for a short away screen. Scheduled mid-rolls are ads, not scheduled video intermissions.

Choose the right kind of break

What you want Use What viewers see Timing and control
Show a particular prerecorded clip or custom break scene An encoder such as OBS, which sends the composed program to YouTube The scene and media included in the encoder’s outgoing feed You switch scenes when you choose; OBS supports scene switching, transitions, and hotkeys.
Put up a temporary away screen without building an encoder scene YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break feature YouTube’s default slate or an eligible video from your channel library Choose 1, 3, or 5 minutes; the break does not end automatically.
Offer viewers advertising during a monetized stream YouTube live mid-roll settings An ad for viewers who receive one; other viewers continue seeing the stream Automatic, scheduled, or manual controls are available. A scheduled interval is not a guaranteed video break.

Switch between camera and prerecorded video with OBS

OBS is one documented encoder option. In this workflow, OBS creates the mixed program feed and sends it to the scheduled YouTube event using the event’s server URL and stream key. Scheduling the event in YouTube creates the event and, if useful, its upcoming page; it does not schedule arbitrary future changes between encoder scenes.

  1. Schedule or open the event. In YouTube Studio, use Live Control Room to create or select the stream. If you want viewers to see an upcoming event and set reminders, schedule it there. Locate the event’s encoder connection details, including the server URL and stream key.
  2. Build the scenes in OBS. Create and label separate scenes for the live camera, prerecorded video, and any break card or break video. Add the relevant camera, media, audio, and graphic sources to each scene.
  3. Load and check the media. Confirm that each clip plays, that its audio is audible and balanced, and that the scene shows the intended image. Decide how a clip should behave at its end—for example, whether the scene should hold on a card or you should switch away manually.
  4. Connect OBS to the YouTube event. Enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder connection settings. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your channel’s live event.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are recommendations, not hard requirements. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  6. Switch scenes at the intended moment. Use the OBS scene controls or a configured hotkey to move from camera to prerecorded video and then to the break scene or back to the camera. Check the transition and audio as you switch.

Scene names, media playback, transitions, and hotkeys should be tested before the broadcast. A scheduled YouTube event and an OBS scene change solve different jobs: one schedules the live event; the other changes the program the encoder sends.

Use YouTube’s Take a Break overlay

Take a Break is a native Live Control Room option for putting an away overlay over the stream. It is not the same as changing the scene in OBS, and it is better suited to a brief pause than to programming a sequence of clips.

  1. In Live Control Room, open the break overlay settings.
  2. Choose YouTube’s default slate or select a video from your channel library. A selected video must be public or unlisted and allow embedding.
  3. Choose the available duration: 1, 3, or 5 minutes.
  4. When you are ready to resume, return to Live Control Room and end the break manually. The countdown reaching zero does not end it automatically.

Use mid-rolls only for advertising

For monetized live streams, YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-roll ad controls. Scheduled intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. These intervals govern opportunities for ad delivery, not the timing of a custom prerecorded scene. An ad is not guaranteed to appear for every viewer; viewers who do not receive one continue watching the stream.

YouTube recommends automatic ad placement. If you choose manual insertion, use Live Control Room controls; YouTube also documents an option to insert ads with a Stream Deck plugin, but additional hardware is not required for scene switching or Take a Break. YouTube reported an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” for channels that enabled automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. That platform-reported comparison is about ad revenue, not stream switching, and does not predict an individual channel’s result.

Check rights before playing prerecorded material

Review the rights for the video, music, and any break media before sending them through a live stream. YouTube’s stream settings include rights-management controls, and its encoder guidance advises creators to ensure they have content rights. Uploading a video to your channel or selecting it for a break overlay does not itself establish that you have permission to use it in a live broadcast.

Common problems and what to check

  • The stream is live, but the wrong scene is showing: Confirm that you changed the active OBS scene, not just the selected source, and that the expected sources are visible in that scene.
  • The prerecorded clip has no sound: Check that the media source’s audio is routed to the outgoing OBS mix and that the relevant audio levels are not muted.
  • The stream does not appear in YouTube preview: Check that OBS is connected to the correct event and that its server URL and stream key match that event. Review the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
  • A Take a Break overlay will not play the selected video: Check that the channel video is public or unlisted and that embedding is allowed.
  • The break countdown reaches zero but the stream remains on the overlay: End the break manually in Live Control Room.
  • Some viewers do not see an ad during a mid-roll: Ad delivery is not guaranteed for every viewer; viewers who do not receive an ad continue seeing the stream.
