OBS’s ordinary Media Source handles a single file; VLC Video is the playlist-capable source. If an MP4 is blank, silent, or stuttering, check the codecs inside the file rather than relying on its .mp4 extension.
Set up an OBS playlist with VLC Video
- Check your OBS architecture. In OBS, open Help > About and note whether the installed version is 64-bit.
- Install VLC for Windows. Match its architecture to OBS. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, and the VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Restart OBS after installing VLC if needed, so OBS can detect the VLC libraries.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene where you want video to play, click + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video. If it is absent, recheck that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Add files in the intended order. In the source properties, add the MP4 files to the playlist. Start with one file you know plays correctly before loading the full collection.
- Set playback behavior. Turn shuffle off for a standard ordered playlist and enable Loop Playlist to repeat it. Choose whether playback should stop when the source is hidden according to how you use scenes; OBS exposes visibility-related playback controls for VLC Video.
- Test in OBS. Start playback and check both the picture and audio in the preview. Confirm the sequence and repeat behavior before relying on it during a recording or stream.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS lists .mp4 among supported Media Source file extensions, but that does not guarantee every MP4 will play. An MP4 is a container: its video and audio streams use codecs, and those encodings affect playback. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide discusses formats and codecs separately.
Diagnose an MP4 that will not play properly
Check what is inside the file
Use VLC’s file information or another media inspection tool to identify the video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and audio layout. Then test a representative file in the OBS source you plan to use. Microsoft lists MP4 as a Windows Media Player file type, but notes that installing codecs can expand support; a familiar extension alone is not proof that a particular encoding is supported. Match the symptom to the next check
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and confirm it matches OBS’s architecture. Restart OBS and check the Sources menu again.
- The playlist does not advance through multiple files: Confirm you added a VLC Video source rather than a Media Source, and check that the files are present in the playlist.
- Video is blank or audio is missing: Inspect the file’s actual video and audio codecs, then test another known-good file. A .mp4 extension does not identify the codecs inside it.
- Playback stutters: Check the file’s encoding characteristics and test it directly in VLC as well as in OBS. VideoLAN notes that H.264 playback can be too slow in some circumstances, so hardware and file characteristics may affect playback. See the VLC Windows FAQ.
- It plays in VLC but not in OBS: Test it in the intended OBS source and verify the VLC/OBS architecture match. Playback in one application does not establish compatibility in another.
When to convert an MP4
Convert only after inspection and testing point to an encoding compatibility problem. Renaming a file extension does not convert it. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the media streams; transcoding decodes and re-encodes one or more streams. Transcoding can affect processing time, output size, and quality, while remuxing cannot fix an unsupported codec inside the file.

There is no universal conversion preset established for every OBS and VLC installation. Pick output settings based on the codec support of the player, the source’s resolution and frame rate, desired quality and file size, and whether suitable hardware acceleration is available. Keep the original, test the converted file in VLC, then test it again in the OBS VLC Video source.
Does the setup differ in India?
The OBS and VLC workflow described here is not country-specific. The cited documentation does not establish a special India-only setting or codec package. If playback differs on your Windows PC, check the installed OBS and VLC versions and the file’s encoding rather than assuming geography changes the setup.
