To estimate the time to upload a 24/7 YouTube playlist, add the actual file sizes and divide by your sustained upload speed. The playlist’s 24-hour playback schedule does not mean you need to upload one 24-hour file. For files measured in decimal gigabytes and internet speed in megabits per second (Mbps), use: hours = total GB × 8,000 ÷ upload Mbps ÷ 3,600, or approximately total GB × 2.222 ÷ upload Mbps. This estimates file transfer only—not YouTube processing or the time until every resolution is ready.
Calculate the upload time from total file size
First, total the sizes of the video files you plan to add to the playlist. Then divide that total by the upload throughput your connection can sustain. YouTube says, “Uploading times vary depending on your file size,” and identifies bandwidth, upload traffic, and video quality as factors that affect the time.
For decimal gigabytes (GB) and megabits per second (Mbps):
Estimated hours = total file size in GB × 8,000 ÷ upload speed in Mbps ÷ 3,600

A quicker equivalent is estimated hours ≈ total GB × 2.222 ÷ upload Mbps. For example, 100 GB at a sustained 20 Mbps takes about 11.1 hours by this calculation, before allowing for speed variation, retries, or other practical delays. This is a transfer estimate, not a measured YouTube upload result.
Check the units before calculating
- Mbps and MB/s are different. Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. One byte is eight bits. If your speed reading is in MB/s, do not multiply by eight again.
- Keep GB and GiB distinct. Some systems report decimal GB, while others display binary GiB. Use a consistent unit for file size and calculation; a small mismatch can make the estimate less accurate.
- Use upstream speed, not download speed. A download-speed result does not tell you how quickly you can send files.
Estimate file size when you have not exported the videos
If you do not yet know the file sizes, use the encoded total bitrate as a planning estimate:
Approximate decimal GB = duration in seconds × total bitrate in Mbps ÷ 8,000

Total bitrate includes video and audio. If you start with a video-only bitrate recommendation, add the audio bitrate for a closer estimate. An encoder’s projected file size or a representative exported sample is usually more useful than runtime alone. Variable bitrate, content complexity, codec, frame rate, quality settings, and audio all affect the final size.

YouTube’s SDR video bitrate recommendations
YouTube publishes the following recommended video bitrates for SDR uploads. The surfaced YouTube page does not state a publication year. These are encoding recommendations, not estimates of your internet speed or promises about resulting file size.

YouTube’s recommendations also include MP4 as a container and H.264 as a video codec, among other settings. Use the actual exported size for a firm estimate; bitrate arithmetic is only a forecast.

Worked examples for a continuous playlist
One long file
A 24-hour file encoded at a total average bitrate of 8 Mbps would be about 86.4 decimal GB: 86,400 seconds × 8 Mbps ÷ 8,000. At an effective 20 Mbps upload speed, the baseline transfer estimate is about 9.6 hours. This assumes 8 Mbps is the total audio-plus-video bitrate. YouTube’s 1080p upload recommendation of 8 Mbps is for video, so it does not establish that a finished file’s total bitrate will be 8 Mbps.
Several shorter files
If the playlist consists of multiple videos whose sizes add up to 86.4 GB, the same baseline calculation applies. Uploading files one after another does not change the total-byte calculation, though starting individual uploads can add overhead and network conditions may change. Use the sum of file sizes rather than multiplying the playlist’s runtime by an assumed bitrate if you already have the files.
Planning around a deadline
Do not assume a speed-test maximum will hold throughout a large upload. For a deadline, estimate with a conservative portion of the measured upstream speed and leave a buffer for busy upload traffic, fluctuations, interruptions, and processing. YouTube notes that uploads can take from a few minutes to several hours and that bandwidth and upload traffic can affect the duration. Its guidance says an interrupted upload can be continued within 24 hours by selecting the same file again.

Allow time for YouTube processing after upload
The calculation above estimates sending source files to YouTube. Processing happens afterward. YouTube initially makes a low-quality version available; higher resolutions such as 1080p or 4K may take longer, and high-resolution options can be absent for several hours while processing continues. YouTube says processing time depends on format, duration, frame rate, quality, and traffic.
If viewers need to watch the playlist at full quality at a particular time, allow a separate processing window after transfer. YouTube Studio’s upload flow can show estimated processing time for SD, HD, and 4K, but the time can vary.
Check YouTube’s limits and playlist workflow
Limits for individual videos
YouTube’s current guidance says verified accounts can upload videos longer than the default 15-minute limit. The maximum file size is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Older uploads may exceed today’s duration limit. Check your account’s eligibility and YouTube’s current rules before planning unusually long files: a 24-hour continuous playlist may need to be made from multiple videos rather than one 24-hour upload.

Adding uploaded videos to a playlist
YouTube Studio’s computer upload workflow allows selecting up to 15 videos at a time and adding a video to a playlist. That is a batch-selection limit for that workflow, not a stated limit on how many videos a playlist can contain. You can upload files in batches and organize them in the playlist you intend to use for playback.

Uploading pre-recorded videos transfers files that YouTube stores and processes. A live stream sends a continuing encoded signal to YouTube, so its bandwidth and stability needs are different. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking upload bitrate, leaving headroom, and using a reliable connection; the guidance recommends 20% room for a live stream. That figure is live-stream guidance, not a universal multiplier for estimating the transfer time of stored video files.
Troubleshoot estimates that are far off
- The upload takes much longer than the calculation. Check whether the speed figure was download speed rather than upload speed, whether the connection sustained the test result, and whether other traffic is using the connection. Recalculate from actual total file size and a conservative upstream rate.
- The file-size estimate is unexpectedly low. Confirm whether you used video-only bitrate while ignoring audio, and whether the encoder uses variable bitrate. Prefer the exported file size when available.
- The estimate is off by about a factor of eight. Check for a bits-versus-bytes mix-up: Mbps and MB/s differ by a factor of eight.
- The files uploaded but HD or 4K is unavailable. Transfer may be complete while processing continues. Check the processing status in YouTube Studio and allow more time for higher resolutions.
- A single long video cannot be uploaded. Check account verification, the 15-minute default threshold, and the 256 GB-or-12-hours maximum. Split the program into multiple files if necessary, then arrange them in the playlist.
- An upload was interrupted. YouTube Help says you can continue within 24 hours by selecting the same file again.
