You can make a creator highlight in YouTube Studio while a live stream is running or after it ends: find the moment, trim the segment, add its title and privacy settings, then select Create. If you want a short looping excerpt to share from the source video instead, use YouTube’s separate Clip feature.
Choose the right kind of highlight
YouTube has two different features that can turn a live moment into something shareable. A creator-made highlight is a separately published, edited video. A Clip is a short looping excerpt linked to its original video or stream.

Make a creator highlight in YouTube Studio
You can create the edited highlight during the broadcast or after it ends. YouTube’s instructions describe solo streamers marking moments and editing afterward; a team can also make a highlight during the broadcast. A team is not required.
- Open the live workflow: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open or start your stream from Stream or Manage.
- Mark a moment if you are live: When something worth keeping happens, optionally select Insert stream marker in the upper-right. The marker helps you find the moment on the timeline in YouTube Editor later.
- Start the highlight: Select Create highlight.
- Set the segment: Drag the timeline handles to trim the clip or edit its timestamps. Use the mute/unmute control if the excerpt should not include its original audio.
- Prepare the video: Enter a title, choose the privacy setting, and add a description.
- Publish: Select Create. YouTube says the highlight is published automatically.
If you are editing after the broadcast, open the stream’s archived video in the Studio workflow and create the highlight from there. YouTube may not preserve every long stream as an archive, so do not make the platform copy your only recording for a long event.

Make a viewer-facing Clip
Use a Clip when you want to share a brief moment that loops and points back to the original stream or video. This is not the same as creating a separate edited highlight in Studio.
- Open the eligible source video or stream’s watch page.
- Select More → Clip.
- Add a title and select a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Share the Clip. Clips are public, and people who can watch the source can watch its Clip.
Creators can manage Clips made from their videos in YouTube Studio. For a live stream, DVR must be available and the selected moment must fall within the DVR timeframe. A Clip made outside that timeframe may not become playable until the live stream ends and the original video is posted. See YouTube’s Clip guidance.

Understand DVR and long-stream recording limits
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live broadcast from where they paused. It does not let them seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
The DVR setting is in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under stream settings and additional settings. A change made after you go live applies to viewers who begin playback after the change; it does not change the experience for people already watching. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This matters if you plan to create a highlight after the broadcast: without a usable recording, you may not be able to retrieve the moment. A separate drive, such as an external SSD for video recording backup, is an optional way to keep another copy; YouTube does not endorse a particular drive or capacity. YouTube also says 1440p and 2160p streams are automatically archived. Read YouTube Help: Archive live streams before relying on an archive.
Save a Short highlight from a mobile live stream
YouTube’s mobile live-stream promotion workflow can offer a Short highlight when the broadcast meets its eligibility conditions. The stream must be between 10 minutes and 12 hours, vertical, streamed using the YouTube mobile app, and have chat enabled. It must not be marked Made for Kids or be a screencast, and it must comply with YouTube’s safety standards. A saved highlight defaults to private. Eligibility does not guarantee that every stream will have the option; check the controls available for your broadcast. See YouTube Help: Promote your live stream.

Choose based on what you want viewers to do
- Publish an edited standalone video: use the creator highlight workflow in YouTube Studio.
- Share a quick looping excerpt that leads back to the source: make a Clip, provided the source and segment are eligible.
- Turn an eligible vertical mobile broadcast into a Short: use the mobile highlight option when YouTube makes it available.
- Keep the option to edit after a long broadcast: record a local backup instead of relying only on YouTube’s archive.
