OBS’s built-in VLC Video source can play a playlist, but its documented settings do not promise to restore the last-playing file after OBS restarts. The third-party Media Playlist Source plugin says it saves the currently playing file for playback when OBS restarts. That claim covers the file, not the exact timestamp inside it.
Choose the behavior you need
- Keep a playlist and control its order or looping: use OBS’s built-in VLC Video source.
- Restore the file that was playing when OBS restarts: consider the Media Playlist Source plugin, after checking compatibility with your OBS version.
- Resume at the exact playback timestamp: neither the cited OBS documentation nor the plugin page establishes that behavior.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, distinguishes the single-file Media Source from VLC Video, which supports playlists. Settings and defaults may differ in newer OBS builds.
Set up a playlist with OBS’s VLC Video source
Install VLC if the source is missing
OBS requires VLC to be installed for VLC Video to appear. Match the installation architecture: OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
Add and configure the playlist
- In OBS, select the scene where the playlist should appear.
- In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video. If it is not listed, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Give the source a name, then add the media files to its playlist using the source properties.
- Choose whether to enable Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist, according to whether you want the list to repeat in order or play in a shuffled order.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” This affects playback when the source is hidden and shown; it is not a setting for restoring state after a full OBS restart.
The OBS documentation describes playlist order, looping, and visibility behavior, but does not describe saving the current playlist item across an OBS restart. These settings alone therefore should not be relied on to restore the last-playing file.

Use Media Playlist Source to restore the current file
The OBS forum resource page for Media Playlist Source 0.1.3 says the plugin “Saves the currently playing file so it would be played when OBS restarts.” This is the plugin author’s feature statement, not a built-in VLC Video feature or a guarantee about the playback position.
Check compatibility before installing
- The resource page labels the plugin version 0.1.3 and states that versions from 0.1.0 require OBS 31.
- The page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Confirm the current compatibility details on the resource page for your operating system and installed OBS build.
- The listed limitations include no audio-track or subtitle selection.
- Folder contents do not refresh automatically; according to the page, saving settings manually refreshes them.
Plugin versions and compatibility information can change. Check the resource page before installing or upgrading, and keep a copy of any important OBS profile or scene collection before changing plugins.

What “resume” means—and what is not established
Restoring the last file is different from continuing at the same point within that file. The plugin page claims the currently playing file will be played when OBS restarts; it does not say that the playback timestamp is saved. If continuing from the exact second matters, do not assume this plugin provides it.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is not available in the Sources menu

The playlist starts over when OBS restarts
Loop, shuffle, and visibility settings govern playlist cycling, ordering, and hidden-source behavior. OBS’s documentation does not identify them as restart-persistence controls. If restoring the current file is required, check the Media Playlist Source plugin’s current compatibility and feature details.
A newly added file in a folder does not appear
The plugin resource page lists automatic folder refresh as a limitation and says saving settings manually refreshes folder contents.
