One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a prerecorded cartoon sent to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, the practical fix is to run FFmpeg under a supervisor that starts a fresh FFmpeg process when the publisher exits. Keep the correct YouTube ingest URL and stream key in the restart configuration. FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are HTTP protocol options, not a general RTMP(S) output-retry switch. A restart can restore publishing after a temporary failure, but it may interrupt the broadcast and restart the cartoon from its beginning.
Why FFmpeg’s reconnect flags may not solve a YouTube publishing drop
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_delay_max in its HTTP protocol section. These options address HTTP connections, including some HTTP inputs; the documentation does not define them as generic RTMP(S) output-reconnection controls. Adding them to an RTMP(S) publishing command is therefore not evidence that FFmpeg will reconnect to YouTube. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
For a YouTube RTMP(S) publishing failure, use an external supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. This creates a new publishing connection rather than repairing the old one in place. YouTube may not preserve the same viewer-facing live event state, so expect an interruption and check the Live Control Room after recovery.
Set up the YouTube ingest details safely
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and copy its exact server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Use the RTMPS server URL when your FFmpeg build and publishing setup support it. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers the URL and connection troubleshooting: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a published command example, public process listing, or log. For a persistent service, inject it through a protected environment or another secret-handling method supported by your operating system.
- Before relaunching, confirm the URL and key are still the ones for the intended live stream. A retry loop cannot correct a revoked or mistyped key, a malformed URL, an unavailable input file, or a persistent network outage.
Choose input and output settings for the cartoon
For a prerecorded local video
Use -stream_loop -1 before the input option to loop a local file indefinitely, and -re to read it at its intended real-time pace. Both are appropriate to this example because the source is a prerecorded file, not an already-live feed. If FFmpeg restarts, the file can begin again from the opening frame; use this approach only if that reset is acceptable for the broadcast.

For a live source
Do not blindly apply file looping or real-time file pacing to an already-live input. Choose input options that match the source and its capture or transport behavior, then retain the external restart strategy for a failed publishing process.
Match the YouTube ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating an example bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. For context, YouTube’s current table lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate at 1080p30; that figure is for that specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate row, not a general setting for every stream. Guidance and table accessed 2026-10-03; see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

In the example below, 4500k video bitrate and a 60-frame GOP are illustrative values only, not YouTube-wide recommendations. Select bitrate from the applicable current table row and set the GOP to approximately two seconds at the actual frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps). Confirm the FFmpeg build includes the chosen encoder.
Use a retry loop to relaunch FFmpeg
This shell example continuously retries after a nonzero exit and waits five seconds before each retry. It is a starting point, not a tested universal command. Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY securely in the environment before running it; do not hard-code a real key into a script that others can read.

A successful exit ends this example rather than restarting. A failed attempt waits five seconds, then launches FFmpeg again. If the connection keeps failing, a production setup should increase the wait after repeated failures and cap the delay, so a persistent configuration problem does not trigger rapid endless retries. Handle signals and intentional shutdowns deliberately; otherwise, an operator’s stop command may be mistaken for a reason to restart.
Shell loop or service manager?
| Approach | Useful when | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Shell retry loop | A straightforward one-off process where you can supervise it in a terminal or wrapper. | Retry delay and backoff, safe handling of intentional stops, log location, and secure key injection. |
| Operating-system service manager | A broadcast that should keep running persistently or recover after a reboot. | Configure its restart policy and delay, logging, boot-time behavior, secret handling, and how it distinguishes a normal end from a failure. |
These are implementation trade-offs, not guarantees about a particular platform. Whichever method you choose, verify that it launches the intended command and that repeated failures do not create an uncontrolled restart loop.

Check whether the restart recovered the broadcast
- Read the FFmpeg log to see whether the input opened, encoding continued, and a new publishing connection was attempted.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and confirm that the expected live event is receiving video and audio.
- If FFmpeg cannot open the cartoon, fix the path, permissions, or media problem; restarting will not repair a missing or unreadable file.
- If it cannot publish, verify the exact server URL, RTMPS support, stream key, and network connection. For an SSL error, YouTube says that specifying port 443 may help when supported; its connection-timeout guidance also recommends checking the URL and RTMPS support. See the RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- Test with representative movement and audio before the broadcast, and confirm that the upload path can sustain the chosen bitrate.
Common causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and repeatedly starts but never reaches YouTube | Invalid URL or key, unsupported RTMPS setup, or no usable network connection. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check that the FFmpeg build supports the selected transport, and inspect the error log. For an SSL error, test YouTube’s port 443 suggestion if supported. |
| Publishing reconnects, but the cartoon starts over | The supervisor launched a new FFmpeg process and the local file begins at its start. | This is expected for the example’s looped-file command. If episode continuity matters, account for the restart behavior in the broadcast plan rather than assuming a process restart resumes at the prior timestamp. |
| FFmpeg restarts but immediately fails on input | The input file is missing, inaccessible, or invalid. | Check the file path, permissions, and whether the file plays or decodes correctly. A retry cannot fix a persistent source error. |
| YouTube reports unstable or unhealthy stream quality | The selected bitrate may exceed the reliable upload capacity, or output settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Check upload stability, lower the bitrate if needed, and use the current table row for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. If the encoder is on unstable Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection; a cable does not make FFmpeg retry. |
