When FFmpeg exits, a setting inside FFmpeg cannot restart that process: an external supervisor must launch it again. On Linux, a service manager such as systemd can do this. If FFmpeg is still running but its network output has failed, FFmpeg’s fifo muxer offers a separate recovery mechanism. Neither approach guarantees seamless playback or that YouTube will accept the reconnect; check the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
First identify what stopped working
There are two different failure cases, and they need different fixes:
- FFmpeg has exited: use a process supervisor to start a new FFmpeg process.
- FFmpeg is still running, but its output is failing: consider the
fifomuxer’s output-recovery options. - YouTube receives a stream, but delivery or quality is poor: investigate the input, stream credentials, encoder load, and network rather than assuming a restart will fix it.
A supervisor restarting FFmpeg does not establish that YouTube accepted the new connection, restored the same live event, or resumed playback without a gap. The available guidance does not establish universal reconnection timing; behavior can vary with the FFmpeg build and YouTube stream settings.
Restart FFmpeg with a process supervisor
Use a service manager on Linux
Configure FFmpeg as a service under a manager such as systemd, with a restart policy and delay appropriate to your stream. A January 2025 user-posted FFmpeg-user example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; treat those as illustrative values, not a universal or validated YouTube configuration. See the user-posted service example.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the FFmpeg command, input, output URL, and stream key in the service configuration you control. Add logging so you can tell why a process exited and whether a restarted process remains running. Choose behavior for intentional shutdowns carefully: an unconditional restart policy may relaunch a service you meant to stop. Check the service manager’s status and logs after a failure; a successful process launch alone is not proof of a successful stream.
Verify the restart from YouTube’s side
After the supervisor launches FFmpeg, open YouTube Live Control Room and check that the incoming stream is present, preview it, and review stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring an encoder stream, but restarting one FFmpeg process is not the same as testing a primary-to-backup encoder failover. YouTube’s failover guidance says to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Use FFmpeg output recovery only when FFmpeg stays alive
FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer can attempt to recover a failed output while the FFmpeg process continues. It does not relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits. In the FFmpeg documentation, attempt_recovery defaults to false. Other documented defaults include a five-second recovery_wait_time, unlimited max_recovery_attempts, a queue_size of 60 packets, and recover_any_error set to false. These are defaults, not guarantees about recovery timing or suitability for a particular stream.
The FFmpeg manual includes an RTMP example using -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a one-second retry interval. That interval is an example value, not a general recommendation. Adapt any example to your actual audio and video inputs and test it before relying on it in production.

Understand what happens if the FIFO queue fills
By default, a full FIFO queue blocks the encoder. Setting drop_pkts_on_overflow allows encoding to continue but drops packets, so part of the stream is omitted. The documented restart_with_keyframe option defaults to false. These choices trade continuity of encoding against retaining every queued packet; none substitutes for a supervisor when FFmpeg itself has terminated.
Check the stream key, encoder, and connection
YouTube’s stream key and stream URL are the connection details the encoder uses to send its feed. If the key was reset, update the encoder configuration before expecting a restarted process to connect. YouTube documents stream-key management and encoder settings in Manage live stream settings and Encoder settings. YouTube also recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health; consult its guidance for RTMPS and encoder setup.

If the stream still fails or performs poorly, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection. A restart policy cannot repair a bad or unavailable input, invalid credentials, overloaded encoding, or a broken network path. See Troubleshoot your live stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep a YouTube radio stream running without maintaining an always-on FFmpeg host, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
