Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If audio and animation start in sync but gradually separate during a 24/7 FFmpeg stream, first measure whether the offset grows smoothly or jumps at a loop or segment boundary. Those patterns point to different investigations: gradual drift suggests checking clock, sample cadence, and timestamps; a sudden jump suggests inspecting the transition and its timestamps. There is no confirmed single fix without the FFmpeg version, command, media, and measurements.
First determine what kind of sync problem you have
Compare audio and video near the start, after a representative interval, and after a content transition. Record whether the offset stays about the same, grows steadily, or changes suddenly. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a universal threshold.
- Nearly constant offset: investigate stream start times and any intentional input offset. A fixed shift changes timing once; it does not correct an offset that keeps accumulating.
- Gradual drift: investigate audio clock or sample cadence against video timing and timestamps. A growing mismatch is not, by itself, proof of one particular cause.
- Sudden jump: inspect timestamps at the relevant loop, segment, or input change. Do not assume looping is involved unless your pipeline actually changes assets or segments.
- Only downstream playback looks wrong: compare a local recording of FFmpeg’s output with the receiving player or platform. The symptom alone cannot distinguish an output-timing issue from receiver behavior.
FFplay can show synchronization drift during playback. Its documentation describes the master clock as controlling audio-video synchronization and notes that audio is the default master clock in most players; changing the clock can be relevant in some streaming or high-quality broadcast cases. The manual characterizes -sync mainly as a debugging option, not a general repair. See the FFmpeg Project’s FFplay documentation.
Collect evidence before changing the command
Inspect stream timing and frame-rate fields
Use ffprobe on the source and, if possible, a representative output capture. Note audio and video start times and durations, reported frame-rate fields, and whether the video is variable-frame-rate. If the stream uses multiple assets or segments, compare their timestamp origins as well. The FFmpeg Cookbook’s Sync Audio and Video guide gives examples of inspecting fields such as start_time and frame rate; treat it as practical secondary guidance, not a diagnosis of your setup.

Watch the actual playback drift
Play the relevant feed or a representative capture in ffplay with its statistics display enabled. The official manual says the statistics include stream duration, codec parameters, current position, and audio/video synchronization drift. Compare readings at the beginning, later in playback, and around a transition rather than relying on a single observation. Consult the FFplay manual for the installed build’s option syntax.
Record the pipeline details
Before editing anything, save the exact FFmpeg command and note the installed FFmpeg version/build, inputs, output protocol, stream mapping, codecs, filters, and relevant options. Pay particular attention to -copyts, -itsoffset, -stream_loop, and -re, if present. Also note whether audio is stream-copied or encoded, and whether the problem happens within one asset or only at transitions. These details determine which correction is appropriate.

Choose a correction based on the measured pattern
If the offset is present from the start and stays steady
Check the input start timestamps and confirm whether an intentional offset is being applied. A timestamp offset can shift one input relative to another, but it is not a remedy for growing drift. Avoid adding a fixed delay just because the streams are out of sync at one moment: first establish whether the offset remains stable.
If the offset grows gradually
Investigate whether audio cadence and video timestamps diverge over time. The FFmpeg Cookbook offers -af "aresample=async=1:first_pts=0" as an example path for gradual synchronization problems. Treat it as a starting hypothesis, not a guaranteed fix: confirm the installed build’s aresample options and semantics in the official FFmpeg Filters documentation, then check results over a representative runtime.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
An audio filter processes audio; this is not a stream-copy-only adjustment. If your command currently copies audio, applying an audio filter requires decoding and re-encoding that stream. Verify your audio codec and output requirements before changing the pipeline. Do not substitute the legacy-looking -async option by guesswork: establish which option and version you mean, and use the documentation for that build.
If sync jumps at a loop or segment boundary
Inspect packet timestamps immediately before and after the transition and determine whether the new input begins with a reset or discontinuous timestamp origin. If the pipeline does not actually switch or loop inputs, look elsewhere rather than assuming a boundary issue.

FFmpeg’s timestamp behavior depends on input format and flags. Its documentation describes automatic discontinuity correction for formats that accept timestamp discontinuities, including MPEG-TS and HLS. The behavior is automatically disabled when -copyts is used, except for timestamp wrapping detection. Check the relevant options and current documentation for your build in the FFmpeg all-in-one documentation before changing timestamp handling.
Do not confuse a shared timestamp shift with sync repair
Applying a common shift to timestamps can make them begin at a different point without changing the relative timing difference between audio, video, and subtitles. FFmpeg documents that relative differences are preserved under a common shift. A shift to zero therefore does not, by itself, repair A/V desynchronization.

Keep the 24/7 operating setup separate from the sync fix
A continuous schedule makes it important to check both gradual drift over runtime and abrupt changes at content boundaries; it does not establish a special 24/7 FFmpeg defect. FFmpeg documents RTMP as a multimedia streaming protocol over TCP/IP and includes an example of publishing with FFmpeg in its protocol reference. A VPS or streaming host can keep a process running, but changing where it runs will not correct inaccurate timestamps or mismatched timing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded animated videos, StreamNeo is a separate operational option—not a fix for faulty FFmpeg timestamps. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
- The offset is already there at startup: compare audio and video start times and review any intentional offset. Do not use a gradual-drift correction without evidence that the mismatch grows.
- The offset increases over time: collect readings at multiple playback times, then inspect audio timing, sample cadence, and video timestamps. If testing
aresample, verify the installed filter options and account for audio re-encoding. - The offset changes at a transition: inspect packet timestamps around that boundary and check whether an input’s timestamp origin resets or jumps.
- A timestamp option changes behavior unexpectedly: verify whether
-copytsis enabled and which input format is involved; automatic discontinuity handling depends on both. - FFmpeg’s local output appears synchronized but the platform does not: compare the same recorded output in another player and investigate receiver behavior separately from FFmpeg’s output.
What is needed to identify the exact fix
The title alone does not establish a root cause or a validated parameter value. To narrow it down, gather the FFmpeg version/build, full command, input and output formats, audio/video start times and durations, whether audio is copied or encoded, and drift observations at startup, later runtime, and transitions. Until those are known, treat any command change as a hypothesis to test on a representative stream rather than a guaranteed repair.
