How to Estimate Video File Size from Bitrate and Runtime for YouTube

Multiply average combined bitrate by runtime in seconds and divide by 8 to estimate bytes. This guide shows the calculation, unit conversions, YouTube bitrate context, and reasons actual upload size may vary.

Estimate a video’s media size by multiplying its average combined audio-and-video bitrate by its runtime in seconds, then dividing by 8 to convert bits to bytes:

Estimated size in bytes = combined bitrate (bits/second) × runtime (seconds) ÷ 8.

For a useful estimate, include audio bitrate, use average rather than peak bitrate for variable-bitrate video, and label the result as decimal MB or binary MiB. The calculation is approximate, not a promise of the exact uploaded file size.

Calculate the estimated file size

  1. Find the average combined bitrate. Use a combined audio-and-video figure if available. If you only have separate rates, add the video bitrate and audio bitrate first.
  2. Convert the runtime to seconds. Multiply minutes by 60 or hours by 3,600.
  3. Multiply bitrate by seconds, then divide by 8. This produces bytes because a byte contains 8 bits.
  4. Convert bytes into the unit you want. Divide by 1,000,000 for decimal megabytes (MB), or by 1,048,576 for mebibytes (MiB). State which unit you use.

In symbols: bytes = bitrate in bits per second × duration in seconds ÷ 8. For decimal MB, divide that answer by 1,000,000; for MiB, divide by 1,048,576. File managers and other tools do not always label decimal and binary units consistently.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Worked example: a 10-minute 1080p SDR video

YouTube’s upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps), and 384 kbps for stereo audio. Using those recommendations as an example:

  1. Add the rates: 8 Mbps + 0.384 Mbps = 8.384 Mbps, or 8,384,000 bits per second.
  2. Convert 10 minutes to seconds: 10 × 60 = 600 seconds.
  3. Calculate bytes: 8,384,000 × 600 ÷ 8 = 628,800,000 bytes.
  4. Convert the result: 628.8 MB (decimal), or about 599.8 MiB (binary).

This is an illustration based on YouTube’s recommended upload rates, not a claim that every 10-minute 1080p upload will have that size. The recommendations are settings guidance; the actual uploaded file size is a separate property.

Use the right bitrate for your video

Combine video and audio rates

If the bitrate you have is for video only, add the audio bitrate to estimate the complete audio-and-video file. For example, 8 Mbps of video plus 384 kbps of audio is 8.384 Mbps combined. If you already have a combined rate, do not add audio a second time. YouTube’s Data API distinguishes audio and video stream bitrates from the combined bitrate of the uploaded file.

Use average bitrate for variable-bitrate encoding

With variable-bitrate encoding, the data rate changes over the course of the video. Use a representative average combined bitrate for the estimate, not a peak bitrate: a peak describes a high point, not the typical rate across the full runtime. If you do not know the average, the result can only be a rough estimate.

Keep runtime units consistent

The formula requires seconds. Multiply minutes by 60 and hours by 3,600 before calculating. YouTube’s API represents duration in milliseconds, so convert it to seconds by dividing milliseconds by 1,000 if that is the duration value you are using.

YouTube bitrate recommendations are not file-size guarantees

YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, and variable bitrate for uploads. Its guidance says no bitrate limit is required and presents its bitrate figures as recommendations. For SDR video, the table lists these video bitrates:

The same guidance lists 384 kbps for stereo audio. The video rates are not the combined audio-and-video rate, so add audio when estimating the whole file. These recommendations are not required settings, exact-size predictions, or descriptions of every playback rendition YouTube creates.

Why the estimate can differ from the uploaded file

  • Bitrate may vary. The calculation assumes the average rate you supplied represents the full runtime.
  • Audio may be missing from the input. A video-only bitrate underestimates the complete file unless you add the audio rate.
  • Container structures and metadata add data. The simple calculation estimates media data from bitrate and duration; it does not separately account for container and metadata overhead.
  • Units may differ. Decimal MB and binary MiB are different quantities, even when tools use similar-looking labels.
  • Uploaded file size is not playback-rendition size. The formula estimates the file from its bitrate and duration. It does not predict the sizes of versions YouTube may create for playback.

YouTube’s Data API documents the uploaded file’s size in bytes, duration in milliseconds, video and audio stream bitrates, and combined bitrate as distinct file properties. If you need the exact size of a particular upload, check the file itself or its recorded uploaded size rather than treating the estimate as exact.
