Use More > Clip to share a moment without uploading a new video; use YouTube Studio or the mobile app to make a separate upload.
Choose the right kind of clip

The viewer Clip is a link to a selected moment, not a new standalone edit. The Studio and mobile workflows create a separate upload. You do not need an external editor to perform these basic clipping workflows.
Make a shareable Clip from a video
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video you want to share.
- Select More > Clip.
- Enter a title of up to 140 characters, then use the selection slider to choose a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select Share clip. Copy the link, embed it, or use an available social or email sharing option.
The Clip loops from the original video’s watch page. Anyone opening it still needs access to that original. If the source video is deleted, made private, or removed for violating Community Guidelines, its Clips can also be removed. YouTube says Clips from unlisted videos remain available. Create a separate video clip in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Videos and select the uploaded video.
- Open Clips and Shorts, then choose Create clip or Short > Video clip.
- Select the passage by choosing transcript text and confirming, or set the start and end timestamps in the timeline editor.
- Preview the excerpt. If the option is available and useful, add an intro or outro video.
- Select Create draft, then finish the upload flow. YouTube recommends adding a link to the source video in the new clip’s description.
The workflow uses the video transcript for selection and captions in the Short workflow. Available auto-captions can be styled or disabled in the preview. AI suggestions and outlines are available only in certain countries and languages; availability may vary, so check the options in your Studio account. Make a Short from your upload in the mobile app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your own eligible public long-form video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Choose up to 60 seconds, make any available edits such as adding text or filters, and upload.
Shorts made this way link back to the original video. This option is not available for private or unlisted videos or for videos with third-party copyright claims. If Edit into a Short is missing, check the video’s Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio. Upload a finished Short from a computer
If you already edited the excerpt into a file, upload it through YouTube Studio. YouTube’s computer upload guidance allows Shorts up to three minutes long when the video is square or vertical. This is a separate allowance from the mobile Edit into a Short workflow, which selects up to 60 seconds from an existing upload. (YouTube Help: Upload YouTube Shorts.)

Check copyright and eligibility before publishing
- For a mobile Short made from an existing video, the source must be an eligible public long-form upload by you; private and unlisted videos and videos with third-party copyright claims are excluded from that workflow.
- For any uploaded Short, make sure you have approval to use copyright-protected material. YouTube warns that a valid copyright takedown can remove a Short and may result in a copyright strike. (YouTube Help: Upload YouTube Shorts.)
- Using YouTube’s own clipping tools does not itself grant rights to music, footage, or other material in the video.
Troubleshoot common problems
The Clip option is missing
Check whether the video has Clips available and whether your account is signed in. If your goal is a new upload rather than a shareable link, use the creator workflow in Studio instead.
You cannot open a shared Clip
The Clip does not bypass the source video’s access settings. Confirm that the original is still available and that the person opening the link can watch it.

You cannot find “Edit into a Short”
Confirm you are using the mobile YouTube app and viewing your own eligible public long-form video. Private or unlisted videos and videos with third-party copyright claims do not qualify for this route. If the source otherwise qualifies, review its Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio.
The excerpt is longer than the mobile selection allows
The mobile workflow selects up to 60 seconds. For a separately prepared square or vertical file, the computer Shorts upload guidance allows up to three minutes.

A Short is removed for copyright
Review whether you have permission to use every protected element in the upload. A valid takedown can remove the Short and may lead to a strike; editing or clipping the source does not remove that risk.
