How to Make a Thumbnail for a YouTube Live Stream

Create a 16:9 JPG or PNG and upload it through the scheduled stream’s controls in YouTube Studio. Thumbnail options vary by stream setup, so preview the event before going live.

Make a clear 16:9 image, export it as a JPG or PNG, then upload it through the thumbnail controls for your scheduled stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The available controls depend on how you create the stream: a scheduled stream may offer a custom-image upload, while YouTube’s webcam setup instructions say the camera takes a thumbnail.

Prepare the thumbnail image

Design an image that tells viewers what the live event is about at a glance. For a documentary screening, discussion, or premiere, that could mean a recognizable subject, a short title, and a visual that matches the event. Keep faces and any text large enough to read in a small preview; this is practical design guidance, not a YouTube requirement.

YouTube Help’s current video-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, and lists 640 pixels as the minimum width. It accepts JPG and PNG. The same page lists a 50 MB file-size limit on desktop and 2 MB on mobile. These are the figures on the current Help page; check it again before uploading because platform requirements can change. See YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance.

  • Use a 16:9 canvas so the image fits the recommended video-thumbnail shape.
  • Export as JPG or PNG.
  • Stay within the file-size limit for the device and upload workflow you are using.
  • Make sure the image follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines.

Upload a thumbnail to a scheduled live stream

  1. Verify your channel if needed. YouTube requires a verified account to upload custom thumbnails. If the upload option is unavailable, check account verification and any notice shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube also says daily upload limits can vary by country or region and channel history.
  2. Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live and use Manage in Live Control Room to find the scheduled stream. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes selecting scheduled streams there.
  3. Open the scheduled stream’s settings. Select the event and review its edit or customization controls. YouTube documents metadata editing and scheduling in its live stream settings guidance.
  4. Upload or change the thumbnail if the control is available. Choose the prepared JPG or PNG and save the change. Do not assume every stream creation method presents the same thumbnail controls.
  5. Preview the event listing. Confirm that the thumbnail appears as intended before going live, along with the event title and other visible details.

Scheduled stream or webcam setup?

Stream path Thumbnail approach What to check
Scheduled stream managed in Live Control Room Open the selected event’s edit or customization controls and use a custom-image upload if offered. Verify the saved thumbnail in the stream listing before the event.
Stream created through the webcam flow YouTube’s webcam instructions say the camera takes a thumbnail during setup; the flow may not present the same separate custom-upload step. Check the image and preview shown in the webcam setup before going live. See YouTube’s webcam live-stream instructions.

The key distinction is how the stream is being created, not simply whether it is live or scheduled. Check the controls for the selected stream type rather than relying on instructions for a different workflow.

Fix thumbnail upload problems

  • No custom-thumbnail option: Confirm that the channel is verified, then check whether the chosen stream workflow supports an image upload. Webcam setup uses a camera thumbnail according to YouTube’s instructions.
  • Upload rejected: Confirm the file is JPG or PNG, meets the dimensions and file-size limit for your device, and follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
  • Daily upload limit reached: YouTube says limits can vary by region and channel history. Follow the recovery period or guidance shown by YouTube, then try again.
  • Thumbnail does not appear as expected: Reopen the scheduled stream’s controls, confirm the change was saved, and inspect the preview or listing before the event.
