For an OBS-based YouTube stream, turn on Automatic Reconnect in Settings > Advanced, then check that OBS is still running and YouTube is receiving the feed. This restores an interrupted encoder connection when recovery is possible; it does not restart a crashed OBS application or guarantee that a YouTube broadcast that has ended will resume.
What “restart” means—and what OBS can recover
A 24/7 stream depends on several parts working together: the encoder, the computer or hosting environment running it, the network, YouTube’s ingest settings, and the broadcast itself. A disconnect can happen at any one of those points.
- Encoder reconnect: OBS tries to restore its connection to YouTube after an interruption. Automatic Reconnect is an OBS setting. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Application restart: If OBS closes or crashes, its reconnect feature cannot relaunch it. A separate way to start OBS again is needed.
- Broadcast resumption: If YouTube has ended the broadcast, reconnecting the encoder does not guarantee that the same broadcast will resume. You may need to start streaming again or configure a new broadcast.
These are separate recovery problems. Identify which part failed before changing settings or resetting credentials.
Set up OBS to reconnect
- Open OBS settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Advanced and enable Automatic Reconnect. OBS documents reconnect as an Advanced setting. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Allow for the kind of interruption you expect. Review the retry settings available in your OBS version and configure them for the outages your setup may encounter. OBS’s output documentation describes retry counts and intervals; waits increase between attempts to avoid overloading services. A long interruption can exceed the configured attempts, so test rather than assume OBS will keep retrying indefinitely. OBS Output API Reference
- Apply the change and run a recovery test. Test with the same scenes, audio, resolution, and network conditions you expect to use. Confirm that OBS reconnects and that YouTube receives the video again before relying on the setup unattended.

Verify the stream key and URL
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm that the stream key and stream URL configured in OBS match the current YouTube settings. The stream key identifies the feed YouTube should accept, and the URL tells the encoder where to send it. If an encoder reports a start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting steps advise copying the current key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Check whether YouTube is receiving video
Look at the Live Control Room preview and stream health, not just OBS’s indication that it is streaming. If YouTube has no preview, check the local connection, OBS output, stream URL, and key. If the broadcast has ended, a restored feed may require a new start action or a newly configured broadcast; YouTube’s guidance does not promise universal automatic resumption after an ended stream. Make unattended recovery more reliable
Test the complete chain
YouTube recommends testing upload speed, using representative audio and motion in preflight tests, and monitoring stream health. Test with the content and settings you will actually use; a static test image or different network conditions may not reveal problems that occur during a long-running stream. Plan for OBS or computer failure
Automatic Reconnect only works while OBS is running. For a setup that must recover from a computer restart or OBS crash, arrange a separate supervised launch and test it. OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter, which can start streaming when OBS launches; it does not ensure the computer, network, credentials, or YouTube broadcast are ready. Choose an encoder location that fits the job
A local OBS setup gives you direct control of scenes and sources, but its computer and internet connection must remain available. YouTube’s encoder guide covers software and standalone hardware encoders, as well as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams.
