Make the files available to a playback source, such as an encoder on a computer, then send that encoder’s feed to YouTube Live. YouTube’s documented setup uses an encoder and a stream URL and key; it does not establish a direct Drive-to-YouTube broadcast feature. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions explain the YouTube connection.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, and creators must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling your launch.
- Your source files. Have the rights to stream every video and audio track. For a computer-based encoder, download or sync the authorized Drive files to that computer so the playback software can access them.
- An encoder. YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video to a digital format for streaming. An existing computer can do the job; a dedicated mini PC is optional, not a YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- A stable connection and a stream key. The computer must remain powered, connected, and able to play the source files for as long as the broadcast runs. Treat the stream key as private: it is used to send a feed to the configured YouTube stream.
Set up a 24/7 stream with a local encoder
1. Prepare the videos in Drive
Organize the videos in the intended playback order. Download them or use an authorized Drive sync method that makes the files accessible locally; do not assume a shared Drive link is a dependable encoder input. Confirm that the files are complete and playable, and make sure the computer has enough local storage for the set you plan to loop.
2. Enable livestreaming and create the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream for the channel you intend to use.
- In the stream setup, locate the server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers where the encoder supports it.
- Keep the stream key confidential. Enter it only in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings.
Follow the current YouTube instructions for connecting an encoder; labels and layout can change. YouTube’s general description of the format is: “Live streaming lets you interact with your audience in real time with a video feed, chat, and more.” YouTube Help, Get started with live streaming.
3. Configure playback and the encoder
Choose encoder software that can play the prerecorded video or an ordered playlist continuously. Add the local Drive-synced or downloaded files as the playback source, set the YouTube server URL and stream key as the destination, and enable looping if the encoder offers it. The precise controls depend on the encoder; YouTube’s guidance covers the YouTube connection, not a particular playlist application.

Use the source files as supplied unless you have a reason to transcode them. Before starting, check that the selected playback source is the intended file or playlist, the audio is present, and the encoder is sending to the correct scheduled stream.
4. Start sending, inspect the preview, then go live
- Start the encoder’s output to YouTube.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the picture and sound.
- Use the available go-live control if the broadcast is scheduled or awaiting confirmation. Confirm that the public stream is live before leaving the setup.
5. Keep the local setup running
A local encoder depends on the computer, power, local file access, and internet connection remaining available. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the encoder and playlist running, and arrange someone or a monitoring method to respond if playback or transmission stops. A spare computer is not a substitute for checking that the stream is still reaching YouTube.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous 24-hour broadcast will become a single archived video. If retaining an archive matters, plan how to end and restart broadcasts before they reach that boundary, how to manage transitions for viewers, and how to handle the resulting separate recordings. Confirm the current behavior and controls in YouTube’s live-stream guidance.

Rights, copyright, and monetization
Confirm permission for every element
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the rights needed to exploit the live content, including relevant music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. A video being in your Drive, publicly viewable, or available under a license does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it live. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and obtain the permissions needed for the footage, soundtrack, and other material.

A live broadcast is not automatically eligible for monetization
YouTube says its monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video. Its policy calls for original, authentic content and identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially ineligible. The July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content was already ineligible; it did not create a special permission for looping broadcasts. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also treat reused-content review separately from copyright enforcement, so permission alone does not assure monetization.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a livestream: verify the channel’s live-stream eligibility and check for restrictions. If livestreaming was just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: check that the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key match the intended stream, and the computer has internet access. If necessary, generate or copy the current stream details from YouTube Studio and enter them again.
- The preview appears but the stream is not public: inspect Live Control Room for the preview and use its go-live control when the stream setup requires it.
- The video stops or repeats the wrong material: check the encoder’s selected source, playlist order, loop setting, and access to the local files. A Drive file that is not downloaded or synced may not be available to local playback.
- The stream ends when you leave: the local method requires the computer, encoder, and connection to stay on. Check sleep, shutdown, power, and network settings.
- The stream is not archived as one 24-hour video: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; plan separate broadcasts and archive management rather than relying on a single 24-hour recording.
