You can make a 24/7 YouTube stream from videos stored in Google Drive by using an encoder or hosted streaming service to play the files and send the feed to YouTube Live. Drive is the library, not the broadcaster: YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and does not describe ingesting a Drive folder directly. For an unattended stream, playback and encoding must run either on a continuously available local computer or in the cloud.

How the setup works

The video files need to be accessible to the playback system. That system plays them—one at a time or as a playlist—and an encoder sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the platform workflow.

A Google Drive folder alone does not create a live broadcast. Choose a playback and encoding arrangement that can reliably access your files and keep running, then configure it with the YouTube server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.

Choose where playback and encoding will run

Run it on a local computer

A local setup gives you direct control over the playback software and files, but the computer, encoder, network connection, and access to the library must remain available. Power loss, a computer sleep setting, an internet outage, a software crash, or a file-access problem can interrupt the stream. Verify the exact software’s Drive access, playlist looping, restart behavior, and monitoring before relying on it.

Use a hosted service

A hosted arrangement runs playback and encoding away from your home computer. Before choosing any provider, confirm how it accesses Drive or other uploaded files, whether playlists loop, what happens when a file is unavailable or YouTube disconnects, and what monitoring or recovery it offers. Those capabilities vary by provider; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not establish them.

Prepare the video library and confirm rights

  1. Make a library inventory. Record each file and its intended playlist position. Confirm the playback system can access the files under the account and permissions in use; do not assume that a Drive link or folder will be readable by an encoder.
  2. Check video and audio rights. You need the rights to stream every video and soundtrack, including music. A copy in your Drive does not prove that you have streaming rights. YouTube’s terms require the necessary rights for use on Google services, including music rights.
  3. Check any third-party licensing conditions. If a rights holder licensed content for your use, verify that the license covers live streaming on YouTube. YouTube says a licensed creator may still need the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
  4. Test the playlist. Check the order, transitions, end-of-file behavior, and whether playback resumes or loops as intended. These are implementation-specific settings, so confirm them in your chosen playback system.

Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast

  1. Verify channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its live-streaming eligibility page gives the current account and age requirements. Check it before setup, because the conditions can change.
  2. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow time for activation before the intended start.
  3. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the title, description, visibility, audience setting, and schedule as appropriate. Use a broadcast for the viewer-facing event; the encoder stream is the feed sent into YouTube. These are distinct YouTube objects, as explained in the broadcasts and streams documentation.
  4. Copy the stream URL and stream key. Get them from Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder’s YouTube settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel.

Configure the encoder, test, and go live

  1. Select YouTube in the encoder. Use the YouTube service preset if the encoder provides one, or enter the server/ingestion URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion; use the mode supported by your encoder and follow its YouTube-specific instructions. HLS has additional format and playlist constraints and higher latency than RTMP, so do not select it without checking encoder compatibility. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol guidance.
  2. Start playback and encoder output. Confirm the intended file is playing with both picture and sound, then start sending the feed to YouTube. YouTube says the watch page is created and the channel goes live after the encoder starts sending content.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Verify that the correct broadcast is selected, the video and audio are present, and the output is reaching YouTube before relying on unattended playback. Fix any file-access, playback, or connection problem before leaving the setup running.
  4. Monitor the full chain. For a local setup, check power, sleep settings, network stability, storage access, and encoder status. For a hosted setup, confirm the provider’s file-access, monitoring, and reconnection behavior directly. A stream key does not make a broadcast self-restarting, and reusing an encoder stream does not mean one viewer-facing broadcast runs forever.

Plan the broadcast length and replay archive

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That stated guarantee does not cover a stream lasting 12 hours or more, so do not assume a single continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If a replay matters, plan a schedule with archive needs in mind and check the current YouTube live-stream archiving guidance. YouTube’s API documentation also treats each broadcast as a distinct video, separate from the incoming stream feed.

Copyright and monetization are separate checks

Live-stream copyright checks

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. A Drive copy is not permission, and even a license may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and resolve rights questions before broadcasting.

Monetization eligibility

Monetization is conditional on YouTube Partner Program eligibility and channel-wide policies. YouTube’s policy on channel monetization applies to live streams as well as other channel content. It describes reused content as material repurposed from YouTube or another source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. The policy is separate from copyright enforcement, so having permission does not itself guarantee monetization. YouTube also says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its inauthentic-content rules. Do not assume that repeatedly streaming a video library will qualify for monetization. Ads and fan-funding features are available only where eligible, and ad delivery is not guaranteed.

Choosing between local and hosted streaming

Question Local computer and encoder Hosted service
Who is responsible for keeping it available? You must maintain the computer, power, network, and encoder. Playback runs off your computer; confirm the provider’s service commitments and recovery behavior directly.
How will it read Drive files? Confirm the playback software can access the intended files and permissions reliably. Confirm the service’s Drive or file-upload support, account permissions, and behavior when files change or become unavailable.
How does a playlist behave? Test order, looping, transitions, and end-of-file handling in the chosen software. Check the provider’s specific playlist controls and what happens at the end of a file.
What happens after an interruption? Check whether the encoder restarts and how you will detect an outage. Check restart behavior, alerts, health monitoring, and who diagnoses interruptions.
What does it cost? Account for hardware, electricity, internet, maintenance, and your time; the actual amount depends on your setup. Compare the provider’s recurring fees and service terms; verify current prices and included features with the provider.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • You cannot start a live stream: Confirm verification, live-stream eligibility, and whether first-time activation is still pending; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours. Check the current account requirements in YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the correct broadcast is selected and that the encoder has the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The stream starts, but the video or sound is missing: Check local playback first, then confirm the selected file, audio track, and encoder preview. Verify that the encoder is sending the intended feed to the correct broadcast.
  • Playback stops at the end of a file: Check whether the playlist is configured to continue or loop and whether the next file is accessible. End-of-file and looping behavior are controlled by the playback software or service, not by YouTube’s general encoder guide.
  • The stream drops or does not resume: For a local setup, inspect internet, power, sleep settings, and encoder status. For a hosted setup, consult the provider’s documented reconnection and alert behavior. Test recovery before leaving a stream unattended.
  • YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a placeholder: Investigate possible third-party-content matches and confirm that the channel has the rights needed for live use. Contact the rights holder about any required Content ID allowlisting.
  • You need a complete replay of a long broadcast: Do not rely on the automatic-archive statement for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more. Check YouTube’s current archiving guidance and schedule shorter broadcasts if a saved replay is important.
