To switch a 24/7 YouTube radio stream between lofi and ambient music, schedule the change in the playback layer—not by making two ordinary YouTube playlists. YouTube receives one continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS or a cloud playout service; that encoder or service must start the right playlist at the right time while keeping the broadcast live.
Choose where the playlist change happens
There are two practical approaches: run OBS on a computer you keep on, or use a cloud playout service. With OBS, separate scenes or playback states can carry the lofi and ambient sets, and scene automation can switch between them while the same encoder output continues. Confirm you can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream. Check the current requirements in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming. YouTube also requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Clear the music and visuals
Use tracks and artwork you are authorized to broadcast and, if applicable, monetize. A track being labeled “lofi,” “ambient,” royalty-free, or freely available online does not by itself establish permission for a continuous YouTube broadcast. Keep records of licenses and any required attribution. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams; reused content is assessed at channel level, and repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible for monetization. A loop alone does not determine whether a channel qualifies, and no specific outcome can be assumed for unspecified tracks.
Set up playlist switching with OBS
- Prepare two distinct sets. Make separate, clearly named lofi and ambient playlists or media folders. Decide when each should play—for example, a fixed time schedule, a chosen duration, or a playlist-end event. Make sure every file is readable by the computer running OBS.
- Create a playback state for each set. In OBS, build separate scenes or equivalent playback states, each with the intended audio source and any corresponding visual. The OBS forum example uses VLC playlists; it also discusses changing playlists and scene automation. Exact menus and behavior can vary with operating system, OBS version, and plugin version, so consult current documentation for your installation rather than relying on a universal click path.
- Set up the switching rule. Use a schedule or scene-switching automation, such as the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin suggested in the forum discussion. Configure the lofi-to-ambient and ambient-to-lofi changes, including the time or trigger for each. Check whether automation changes the active playlist as intended; the forum thread reports that playlist edits did not always appear without restarting, so do not assume a live playlist edit will take effect reliably.
- Connect OBS to a YouTube live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and use YouTube’s encoder setup to connect OBS. Keep the same broadcast and encoder output running while the internal OBS scene or playlist changes. YouTube documents encoder streaming as a method for live production inputs. - Test a complete transition before leaving it unattended. Run through both playlists, including their last items and the transition in each direction. Listen for silence, overlap, abrupt volume changes, or a track that fails to start; watch for a blank or unintended visual. Confirm what happens after a playlist ends and whether the automation returns to the intended state. The cited sources do not guarantee crossfades or seamless transitions across every configuration.
- Keep the local setup available. For this route, the computer, OBS, media files, power, and internet connection must remain available. A restart, outage, or stopped OBS process can interrupt the broadcast. A VPS/FFmpeg installation is another, more technical self-hosted architecture, but it adds server setup and maintenance; one third-party guide describes that approach at RadioTech Studio.
Plan the handoff, not just the start time
A playlist switch is a change in what the encoder plays, not a new YouTube broadcast. For dependable unattended programming, decide how the handoff should behave and test the actual files and automation. A scheduled change is easy to reason about, while switching on playlist completion depends on how the player and automation handle the end of the final item. Neither method guarantees a gapless transition without testing.

- Give each playlist and scene an unambiguous name so the schedule cannot target the wrong set.
- Set consistent audio levels between the lofi and ambient selections; a large difference can make a technically successful switch sound jarring.
- Decide whether visuals should change with the music or remain continuous, then check for unintended blank frames or mismatched artwork.
- Test a full cycle and an OBS restart. Verify that the broadcast reconnects as expected and that the correct playlist resumes; do not assume the active playlist or automation state will persist.
- Monitor the stream during early runs. A successful scene switch in OBS does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving the intended audio and visual output.
When a cloud playout service makes more sense
A cloud service can avoid keeping a home computer and connection running, but compare the specific controls and limits that matter for your programming: how playlists are arranged, how changes are made while live, what storage is included, what happens after an interruption, and how billing works. Troubleshoot common switching problems
The stream stays live, but the music does not change
Check that the automation rule targets the scene or playback state actually used by the stream, and confirm that the schedule uses the expected time zone. If you edited a VLC playlist while it was already playing, test whether the change appears; the OBS forum discussion reports inconsistent behavior and says a restart was sometimes needed. Make changes before going live where possible.
The switch produces silence or an abrupt cut
Check that the next playlist contains playable files and that its audio source is active and routed to OBS output. Test the end of the outgoing playlist and start of the incoming one. If you need a crossfade, configure and test it in your actual player workflow; the available sources do not establish one crossfade setting that works for every system.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm the channel’s livestream eligibility, the selected broadcast, and the encoder connection in YouTube Studio. If the stream key was changed or copied incorrectly, update the encoder with the current key. Use YouTube’s official setup guidance for the current connection steps.
The stream stops when you leave
In a local OBS setup, leaving the room is not the issue; the computer, OBS process, power, and internet connection must keep running. If you want playback to continue after switching off your computer, use a cloud playout service and verify its current operating terms and recovery behavior.

A track triggers a rights concern or the channel is not monetized
Review the rights for the specific music and visuals, including the license scope for live streaming and commercial use. Monetization is not guaranteed by running a 24/7 stream; YouTube evaluates original and authentic content and assesses reused content at channel level. Consult the current YouTube monetization policy rather than inferring eligibility from the format.
