Make track changes in your playback or automation software, then send its continuous audio output through an encoder to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room handles stream setup and monitoring; it does not create song crossfades. For a 24/7 radio stream, keep playback and the encoder running across track boundaries, and test transitions before relying on the stream unattended.
How a smooth track change works
There are two separate jobs in a YouTube radio stream:
- Playback or automation: selects the next track and applies a supported transition, such as a crossfade or gapless change.
- Encoder: sends the resulting continuous audio (and, if applicable, video) to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts and sends the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to connect it.
A bitrate, codec, stream key, or YouTube ingestion setting cannot smooth a song boundary by itself. The transition must happen in the playback layer before its output reaches the encoder.
Set up the playlist and playback
- Inspect the audio files. Listen to the start and end of each track for embedded silence, long fades, abrupt edits, or a clipped beginning. File-level silence can make an otherwise continuous playlist sound interrupted.
- Choose a playback or automation system that can continue through a queue or loop. Check its documentation for gapless playback or crossfade controls; their availability and names vary by application.
- Set the transition in that system. If crossfade is available, begin with a short test value, then listen to representative track pairs. A crossfade can soften a handoff, but may overlap vocals, announcements, or musical endings. A gapless cut may suit material that should not overlap.
- Keep the output continuous. Configure playback to advance through the sequence without stopping the broadcast connection at each song change. The encoder should receive the ongoing output, not a succession of separately started live streams.
YouTube’s help guidance does not prescribe a crossfade duration or certify a particular music player. Pick a transition based on the material and judge it by listening.

Connect the continuous output to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and set up a live stream. The exact controls can vary with the channel and current Studio interface.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder and confirm the incoming stream appears in Live Control Room. Keep the encoder sending while playback moves between songs.
- Use YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators to check the incoming feed. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring quality.
YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software, and lists cloud services including Gyre and Upstream for continuous prerecorded streaming. Those directory listings do not establish that any of these services provides a specific crossfade function; check the current product documentation for playback and transition support. See YouTube’s encoder directory and setup guidance.
Use compatible stream settings
These YouTube encoder recommendations help the platform ingest a compatible stream; they do not control song transitions. Confirm the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before going live.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Ingestion | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. | Connection from encoder to YouTube. |
| Video codec | H.264, HEVC, or AV1. | Video compatibility and encoding. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. | Audio encoding, not crossfade behavior. |
| Audio for stereo | 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 Kbps recommended audio bitrate. | Audio format and quality. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR). | Consistency of the encoder’s output bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds. | Video stream structure, not song handoffs. |
Choose video settings that fit your upload connection, run an upload-speed test, and test the actual stream. YouTube transcodes incoming video for different devices and network conditions. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; for a radio stream without live interaction, low latency may matter less than stable playback. YouTube explains latency options in its live-streaming tips.
Test the transitions and the watch experience
- Before a public broadcast, run an unlisted test with representative audio and motion.
- Listen to several consecutive track boundaries in the Live Control Room preview. Include pairs with different loudness levels and different amounts of silence at their ends.
- Check whether the transition sounds right at both the end of one track and the beginning of the next. Adjust the playback software’s transition or edit the source files if needed.
- Watch stream health and any encoder or YouTube messages during the test. Check the watch page on desktop and a phone to confirm viewers can access and hear the stream.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will take over cleanly. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. See its guidance.
Plan for a long-running stream
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not give a recommendation there for dividing a 24/7 broadcast into events. Check your channel’s current live-stream and archive behavior, then decide whether your programming and archive needs suit one event or scheduled/repeated events. YouTube’s live setup guide describes the archive qualification.

For an unattended broadcast, consider how playback and the encoder will recover from a computer, application, network, or YouTube connection interruption. Test any backup path you plan to use, and monitor stream health rather than treating a successful initial connection as proof that a long stream will remain healthy.
Choose a local or cloud workflow
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A local setup can suit creators who want direct control and already have the equipment; dedicated hardware is an option for higher-production-value events, not a requirement for a simple playlist. A cloud service can suit a continuous prerecorded stream when you do not want a computer at home to stay on. Compare current capabilities, costs, and transition support with the provider; YouTube’s directory listings alone do not confirm crossfade features.

Common problems and fixes
| What you hear or see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A pause between songs | Silence at the end or start of a file, or playback is not configured for a gapless handoff. | Inspect the source files and playback settings; test the same boundary again. |
| Tracks overlap awkwardly | The crossfade overlaps material that should not overlap, or its duration does not suit the pair. | Adjust or disable the crossfade for that sequence and listen to the transition in a test. |
| The stream stops at a song boundary | Playback or the encoder is stopping between items instead of sending one continuous output. | Configure queue/loop playback and leave the encoder connected across track changes. |
| Live Control Room has no incoming signal | The encoder is not sending, or the stream URL/key or connection settings do not match the event. | Check the encoder’s destination and credentials against the current YouTube event, then restart the encoder if needed. |
| Audio or video quality is unstable | The chosen settings may exceed what the upload connection can sustain, or the encoder may report a problem. | Review encoder and YouTube stream-health messages, test upload speed, and retry with settings appropriate to the connection. |
| Viewers cannot access the stream or archive as expected | The event’s visibility, watch-page access, or archive handling may not match the intended setup. | Check the watch page on desktop and mobile and verify the event’s current settings and archive behavior. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before broadcasting music, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the tracks and any other material in the stream. A smooth transition does not resolve copyright or channel-policy issues. Review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization, and keep records of permissions where applicable; the encoder setup and settings guidance cited above do not grant music rights or guarantee monetization.
