You generally cannot send OBS directly to an Amazon CloudFront distribution for a live stream. OBS needs a compatible ingest destination; CloudFront delivers video to viewers from an origin after the stream has been encoded and prepared for playback. In AWS’s documented live architecture, the path is OBS to an ingest and encoding service, then a packaging or origin service, then CloudFront, then an HLS- or DASH-capable player.
What OBS and CloudFront each do
OBS Studio encodes your live output and sends it to a configured streaming destination. In its Stream settings, you choose a listed service or a custom streaming server and provide the server URL and stream key. Those connection details must come from the ingest service you choose; OBS’s documentation does not provide an AWS-specific ingest URL or key. OBS Studio’s streaming guide explains the service, server, and key fields.
CloudFront is a content delivery network (CDN): viewers request video from a distribution whose origin supplies the content. AWS says, “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” For live video, its documented workflow places encoding and packaging or an origin between the broadcaster’s output and CloudFront. AWS’s CloudFront video guide covers the delivery role; the Live Streaming on AWS solution overview illustrates a broader production architecture.
Choose the AWS path before configuring OBS
For a managed AWS setup, plan the whole signal path first. OBS must send to a compatible ingest endpoint, and the AWS services that follow must produce a format and origin that CloudFront and the chosen player can use.

- OBS output: Encode the live program and send it to the actual ingest endpoint’s server URL and stream key.
- Ingest and encoding: Use a compatible ingest service. AWS’s documented live workflow uses AWS Elemental MediaLive as the real-time encoder.
- Packaging or origin: Use AWS Elemental MediaPackage when the workflow needs packaging for multiple device types or features such as DRM. AWS also describes MediaStore as an origin option when MediaLive already outputs formats required by viewer devices.
- Delivery: Configure CloudFront with the selected origin and cache behaviors suited to the output’s manifests and segments.
- Playback: Give viewers a player that supports the stream format, such as HLS or DASH, and the appropriate playback URL.
MediaPackage and MediaStore are not interchangeable labels for the same step. Choose according to packaging needs and the formats already produced by the encoder. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guidance describes the MediaPackage path and its endpoint-specific delivery configuration.
Configure OBS with the ingest details
- In OBS Studio, open Settings, then Stream.
- Select the streaming service if your ingest provider is listed. Otherwise, choose the custom streaming server option.
- Enter the server URL and stream key issued by the ingest service. Do not enter a CloudFront distribution domain as if it were an RTMP ingest address.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to fit the ingest service’s limits and your available upload bandwidth. There is no universal bitrate for this CloudFront architecture: the relevant ingest service’s specifications govern. OBS advises considering both upload speed and service limits, and notes that 60 fps can load a system more heavily than 30 fps.
- Start with OBS’s defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them, then run a test stream and verify that the ingest, encoding/packaging path, CloudFront playback URL, and viewer player all work.
Do not guess an AWS ingest URL, stream key, or OBS service preset. Obtain the connection details from the compatible ingest service you have configured. The OBS guide explains the fields but does not define an AWS-specific endpoint.

Set CloudFront behaviors for the live format
For a MediaPackage live channel, AWS’s guidance calls for a CloudFront distribution with the MediaPackage endpoint as an HTTPS origin, an appropriate origin path, and cache behaviors for the endpoint’s manifest and segment requests. The patterns differ by format:
| Format | Manifest pattern | Segment pattern |
|---|---|---|
| HLS | .m3u8 |
.ts |
| CMAF | .m3u8 |
.mp4 |
| DASH | .mpd |
.mp4 |
AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for these live cache policies to help avoid stale content. For LL-HLS, forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters on manifest requests; without the needed query forwarding, low-latency requests may not behave as intended. AWS also recommends enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization between MediaPackage and the CloudFront distribution. Match behaviors and authorization to the endpoint format and features instead of applying one generic policy to every stream. Follow the relevant AWS MediaPackage and CloudFront guide for the configuration you select.

Why a CloudFront domain is not an OBS stream destination
A CloudFront distribution serves delivery requests from an origin; OBS needs an ingest destination that accepts the broadcaster’s output. Pasting a viewer-facing distribution domain into OBS does not supply that ingest function. CloudFront’s legacy StreamingDistribution API describes delivery of RTMP content from an origin. That API description does not establish CloudFront as the ingest endpoint for the documented HTTP live-video workflow.
Common setup failures and what to check
- OBS cannot connect: Check that the server URL and key are from the configured ingest service, that they match the selected OBS service or custom-server mode, and that the ingest endpoint is available. A CloudFront viewer domain is not a substitute.
- OBS connects but viewers see no video: Check each handoff: encoder output, packaging or origin, CloudFront origin and behavior, playback URL, and player support for the selected format.
- Playback is behind or manifests appear stale: Review the live cache policy, including the minimum TTL guidance, and make sure manifest and segment paths match the actual format.
- LL-HLS requests do not behave as expected: Verify that manifest requests forward
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partas required by the selected setup. - MediaPackage requests are rejected: Check the configured header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: Reduce output workload if needed, for example by testing 30 fps instead of 60 fps, and check that bitrate and encoder settings fit the available upload capacity and ingest service limits.
Cost and operational scope
This design uses multiple AWS services, potentially including MediaLive, MediaPackage or MediaStore, and CloudFront. The exact services depend on the ingest, packaging, origin, and delivery choices; the sources cited here do not establish current prices, so check AWS pricing for the specific region and configuration before estimating operating cost. A complete production design also requires maintaining the encoder/ingest path, AWS configuration, authorization where used, and playback experience. The AWS reference solution is an architecture example, not a requirement that every streamer adopt every component.
