To run crackling campfire sounds as a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, prepare an original or properly licensed audio-and-visual loop, send it through an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the encoder and its computer connected. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. 1. Prepare campfire audio and visuals you have rights to use
Use a recording you made yourself or obtain permission that covers every audio and visual element in the planned livestream. Check that the permission also covers any replay or archive YouTube may create. Keep copies of licenses, permissions, and correspondence.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can result in a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. If you have licensed third-party material, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID: YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted if your channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
You can pair the sound with a still image, a looped visual, or a live camera view of a fire; make sure you have rights to the visual too. An optional portable audio recorder can help you capture original ambience, but YouTube does not require one.

2. Enable YouTube Live and create an encoder broadcast
- Verify your YouTube channel and check that it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days.
- If this is your first livestream, request activation and allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room, and create a stream using the encoder option for a prepared audio-and-video scene.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream server address and stream key for your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

3. Make the audio loop in OBS
- In OBS, add a Media Source and select your local audio or video file. OBS documents local audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
- Enable Loop for a single media file. If you want a sequence of recordings, add a VLC Video source and use its playlist; OBS enables Loop Playlist by default for that source.
- Add your chosen visual to the scene. Confirm that the campfire audio is audible and that the source does not end unexpectedly.
Check OBS’s current instructions for Media Sources and the VLC Video source, since controls can vary by OBS version.

4. Connect OBS and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the server and stream key from Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP.
- Set a video resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder-settings table recommends 10 Mbps H.264 video for 1080p at 30 fps. That is an encoder recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum connection speed or a requirement for every stream.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- For ordinary stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings recommend a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio, and H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video, with up to 60 fps.
A mostly static image or slowly moving fire visual may not need a high video bitrate. Choose settings based on your upload capacity, then check the stream preview and health status in Live Control Room. Read YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current recommendations.
5. Test before leaving the broadcast unattended
- Run a test with representative audio and video movement; YouTube recommends testing with conditions similar to the actual stream.
- Listen for silence, clipping, unwanted sounds, and abrupt transitions where the loop restarts.
- Confirm that both audio and video are reaching the Live Control Room preview, and review stream health and any messages before publishing.
- For a local setup, plan periodic checks of the encoder, source file, power, and network, along with a way to restart after an outage. A 24/7 schedule does not guarantee uninterrupted operation: a local encoder depends on its computer and connection staying available.
Local OBS or a cloud service?
OBS gives you direct control over the scene and looped files, but a computer and internet connection at your location must remain available. YouTube’s encoder documentation also lists cloud services described as supporting continuous 24/7 pre-recorded streams; a listing is not an endorsement or a guarantee of a provider’s uptime. Compare how each option handles recovery, monitoring, source changes, video quality, and ongoing cost.
