The hard requirements are music rights that cover livestreaming and any archive, plus a plan for interruptions: YouTube does not promise that one broadcast will run indefinitely. Here is how to set it up, test it, and decide whether to operate it locally or in the cloud.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires the channel to be eligible for live streaming.
- OBS Studio and the audio recordings you intend to play. For a multi-file playlist in OBS, install VLC as well; its architecture should match your OBS installation.
- Permission for the sound recordings and musical compositions to be streamed on YouTube, including the territories you intend to reach and any archive you plan to keep.
- A computer and stable internet connection to run OBS for the do-it-yourself method. The computer must remain on and connected while it is encoding.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Clear music rights before building the playlist
Do not assume that a song is safe to stream because it is folk music, old, described as free, or credited in your description. A recording can involve separate rights in the composition and the sound recording. Get written permission or a license that expressly covers YouTube livestreaming, intended territories, and any archive or replay you plan to make available. Keep the documents and any conditions for attribution or reporting.
YouTube’s Livestream terms place the responsibility on the person providing the stream: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions.

All live streams are scanned for third-party content. If YouTube identifies material, it may show a placeholder, warn you, or temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the material continues. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: ask the rights owner whether they use Content ID and, if they do, request that your channel be allowlisted before launch. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Do not rely on Creator Music licenses for this use: YouTube’s cited usage details exclude livestreams. For music sourcing, use the YouTube Audio Library or another source only after checking that its license explicitly permits your planned live and archived uses. A free label or credit alone is not permission.
Choose an OBS playlist method
OBS offers two practical approaches. Use a Media Source for one recording that should repeat, or a VLC Video source when you need OBS to manage multiple files as a playlist. The latter requires VLC installed on the same computer.

Set up the audio playlist and visual in OBS
For one recording
- Open OBS and choose the scene that will carry the broadcast.
- Under Sources, select + and add Media Source.
- Select the audio file. Enable Loop in the source properties, then confirm.
- Play the source and check the mixer meter. Adjust the source level so the signal is clear and not clipping.
For several recordings
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS notes that VLC’s architecture should match the OBS installation.
- In OBS, select + under Sources and add VLC Video.
- Add the audio files in the order you want them played, then enable Loop Playlist.
- Preview the scene and listen through a transition between tracks, then confirm that the playlist returns to the beginning after its last item.
An audio-only source still needs a visual for the live video. Add a still image or other visual source to the scene, such as a title card that identifies the folk tradition, language, performers, and recording source where known. Check that the image remains visible while the audio plays and that the sound is audible in OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream’s Server URL and Stream key from YouTube.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key as required by the connection setup. Do not share or publish the key.
- Apply the settings and start the stream from OBS. Wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, check it, and then start the broadcast in the control room.
- Confirm the public watch page is live and that both audio and visual are present.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating the stream and connecting an encoder. Interface labels can change, so follow the current prompts shown in YouTube Studio and OBS.

Test before announcing the channel
- Listen at a normal viewing volume and check OBS’s audio meter for clipping or silence.
- Check that the next track starts cleanly and that the playlist loops at its end.
- Verify the visual, title, description, and stream are readable and accessible on desktop and mobile.
- Watch the YouTube preview and, if possible, the public stream from a separate device or browser.
- Make a local recording and play it back to confirm that the audio and visual are being captured as expected.
- Run a test long enough to expose problems with playlist transitions, computer sleep settings, or network stability before promoting the stream.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, accessibility, and audio/video quality; its live-streaming tips are useful for the pre-launch check.
Plan for continuity and archives
A 24/7 schedule is an operating plan, not a guarantee that a single YouTube broadcast will stay live forever. With OBS on a local computer, the encoder depends on that computer, OBS, power, and the internet connection. Decide who will notice a failure, how the playlist will be restarted, and how viewers will be told about planned breaks.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive matters, record a local backup and verify that it is saved; do not rely on YouTube to preserve a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Make the channel original and describe it accurately
Identify the folk traditions and languages represented, name performers and recording sources when you know them, and distinguish your own recordings from licensed third-party material. Explain the curation or other original contribution that makes the channel useful to listeners. Do not imply that a playlist is your original performance if it is not.
Looping a playlist does not by itself qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and reviews reused or repetitious content at channel level; reused material without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value can be ineligible. Copyright compliance is a separate requirement. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a business plan around the stream.
