Before you set up the stream
First check that your YouTube channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Confirm access before preparing a long-running broadcast; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Choose audio you created or have permission to use for both live broadcast and any replay you intend to keep. A track’s availability to listen to or download does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms make rights clearance the creator’s responsibility, including applicable music licensing rights. Keep the license or other permission record.

Make the black-screen stream on your computer

Prepare a continuous audio source
Use a finished noise recording with clear broadcast rights. In your streaming software, set the file to repeat or use a playlist that continues playback. Listen through a full loop and check for gaps, clicks, clipping, abrupt volume changes, and unintended system sounds.

Create a black video scene and add the audio
In OBS or another encoder, create a scene that outputs a black canvas and add the prepared audio file to the stream mix. The exact controls for a black source and audio looping vary by software version and operating system; YouTube’s encoder guide does not prescribe a particular OBS scene recipe. Preview the actual combined output rather than assuming the scene is silent or the audio is looping correctly.

Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Choose its privacy and other publication settings for your intended test or broadcast. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose output settings your connection can sustain
A static black picture does not need elaborate video production. Use a modest resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can reliably sustain instead of selecting higher settings without a reason. Set the encoder to a keyframe interval and other parameters supported by YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current values, since platform guidance can change. No dedicated encoder, microphone, capture card, or audio interface is established as necessary for a prepared audio file and static image.

Test the stream before making it public
Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the image is black, the noise is audible and stable, and the stream quality is acceptable. Where appropriate, test privately or as unlisted, then play it on a separate viewer device. If recording locally, check that the file is growing and can be played back. If the workflow presents a separate publication step, select Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring the preview and stream quality.
Plan for interruptions and replays
A computer-based encoder relies on the computer, streaming software, power, and internet connection remaining available. A crash, restart, power loss, or connection failure can interrupt the broadcast. Monitor it and have a recovery plan; neither this setup nor YouTube’s guidance guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 playback.

Plan the replay separately from the live broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, keep a local recording and verify it. Ending and restarting the stream before the 12-hour limit can produce separate broadcasts and an interruption rather than one continuous replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Monetization is not assured. YouTube’s channel monetization policies identify repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content that may be ineligible. In addition, livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand do not count toward qualifying public watch hours under YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program eligibility rules. A continuously repeated noise track should not be treated as a guaranteed route to monetization.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the correct stream, that it is actively streaming, and that the channel is eligible to go live. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview is black but there is no sound: Confirm the audio file is routed to the stream mix, its playback is active, and the encoder’s audio meter responds. Check the viewer-device playback and mute settings as well.
- The noise stops or has a gap: Verify the repeat or playlist behavior in the installed software version, then listen through the transition. A source that ends without looping will leave silence.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Lower output settings to a level the available upload connection can reliably sustain, check the connection and local system, then reconnect using the encoder workflow. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality rather than assuming a connection will hold.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording for a dependable copy and check it during the broadcast.
