1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart by checking whether OBS is encoding with your CPU (x264) or a supported hardware encoder. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system is overloaded, and simplify the scene. These changes address the common sources of load without assuming that a faster computer—or a graphics card upgrade—is necessary. Make one change at a time and check stream health, motion, and audio before leaving a 24/7 broadcast unattended.
First, find out what is using the CPU
In OBS, check the encoder selected for streaming and monitor system use while the cartoon is running. If the encoder is x264, OBS is using the CPU to encode video. If it is a hardware encoder, encoding is handled by a dedicated component where supported—but OBS still has to render and composite the scene, and other parts of the workflow may use CPU or GPU resources.
Record a baseline before changing settings: note the selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether OBS reports rendering or encoding problems. There is no universal CPU threshold or reliable percentage saving for a cartoon stream; the result depends on the computer, scene, source media, and output settings. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
Try hardware encoding if your computer supports it
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves video encoding off the CPU to a specialized component. Supported options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware and operating-system compatibility. Switching encoders does not remove the load from scene composition, filters, or media playback.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance, published January 11, 2022, says NVENC is supported on Windows and Linux with GeForce 750 Ti, 900-series (Maxwell), or newer cards. It recommends Turing-generation NVENC for best results and notes that earlier generations can produce lower quality at the same bitrate. Intel QSV requires supported Intel graphics. OBS supports VideoToolbox streaming on Apple Silicon, but not Intel Macs, citing constant-bitrate limitations. Check the current OBS documentation and the exact hardware in your computer before relying on a particular encoder.
Hardware encoding is not automatically the best picture-quality choice at every bitrate. OBS notes that earlier hardware generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s veryfast preset. Its older x264 guidance describes faster presets as using less CPU, generally with a quality trade-off. No controlled comparison establishes a predictable CPU saving or picture-quality result for every 24/7 cartoon stream.

Reduce resolution or frame rate gradually
Use the lowest output resolution and frame rate that still look right for the cartoon and its audience. Fewer pixels and fewer frames reduce encoding and rendering workload. If 60 fps is not working, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. Check the movement and image detail after each change; animation may look acceptable at a lower frame rate, but the right setting depends on the material.
Reducing the base canvas can require repositioning sources, so treat it as a more disruptive change. OBS reserves that step for systems starved for GPU resources rather than recommending it as the first adjustment.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to your output
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives different bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30; at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps for 1080p60 and 3 Mbps for 720p60. These are ingest recommendations, not promises of lower CPU use. Do not apply one bitrate to every output configuration.
- Use CBR for the rate control.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends.
Check YouTube’s current codec-specific guidance before going live, especially if you use a codec other than H.264. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a healthy, correctly configured input stream.

Simplify the OBS scene
A scene can consume resources beyond encoding. Remove sources you do not need, and keep media resolution sensible for the output: there is little reason to feed an extremely high-resolution source into a much smaller stream if a lower-resolution asset will serve.
- Reduce the number or size of Browser Sources where practical.
- For static graphics, use an image source instead of a browser overlay where that works for your layout.
- Disable filters you do not need, and apply effects to the smallest appropriate source.
- Check hidden sources too; OBS notes that sources may use resources even when hidden.
Test the loop and stream before leaving it on
YouTube advises testing before a live stream with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For a continuous cartoon stream, also check the points that can fail during playback: whether the loop joins cleanly, whether audio behaves correctly at transitions, whether the stream reconnects after a drop, and whether the system remains stable during a representative run. The reviewed guidance does not prescribe a test duration or guarantee uptime.

When is a GPU upgrade worth considering?
Do not buy a graphics card just because CPU use is high. First establish that OBS is using x264, then check whether the existing computer has a compatible hardware encoder. A suitable encoder can offload video encoding, but it will not necessarily fix a scene that is too demanding or every rendering bottleneck. If you do consider an upgrade, verify the exact model and encoder generation against current OBS compatibility guidance; NVENC capability and quality vary by generation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream uses uploaded prerecorded cartoons and you want it to continue without keeping a computer at home running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
