What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed and available in your terminal or command prompt.
- Local video files you have the right to stream, with compatible streams, codecs, and time bases.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- An upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you select.
First-time live-stream activation on YouTube may take up to 24 hours. If live streaming is not enabled yet, allow for that delay before planning a scheduled broadcast. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Create the text playlist
Save a plain-text file beside your videos, for example as playlist.ffconcat. When relying on automatic format recognition, the exact first line must be ffconcat version 1.0 with no leading whitespace or byte-order mark. Put one file directive on each following line, in playback order:

file 'video-03.mp4'Relative paths are resolved from the playlist’s location. For example, if the videos are in a subfolder named clips, use entries such as file 'clips/video-01.mp4'. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. Use plain text rather than a word-processing document, which may add formatting or a byte-order mark.

The concat demuxer reads the list and presents the files sequentially as one virtual input. Its format and path rules are documented in the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.
Check compatibility before streaming
The concat demuxer expects the inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist that mixes files with different audio or video stream layouts may fail or produce an uneven transition. Test the actual files together before starting a public or unattended stream.

- Use clips with matching video and audio stream layouts, codecs, and time bases where possible.
- Check that every referenced path exists and that FFmpeg can read each file.
- Play through the transitions in a test stream; confirm there is no unexpected gap, frozen frame, missing audio, or abrupt timestamp jump.
FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so each file follows the prior one, but inaccurate duration information—such as an estimate based on bitrate—or a truncated file can cause artifacts. The concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override a file’s duration when you have a reliable value. Its default safe=1 setting rejects unsafe paths and directives; do not disable that protection just to make a questionable playlist load. Get the YouTube ingest URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you want to use, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter those values into your encoder configuration. The URL is the ingest destination; the key identifies the stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, chat, or shared command. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio and update your encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. The key should be treated like a password because anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose encoder settings for YouTube
YouTube currently documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. Prefer RTMPS when it is available in the stream settings. Use a bitrate suited to your resolution, frame rate, and codec; YouTube’s recommendations are targets, not proof that your internet upload can sustain the stream.

These are YouTube Help’s current recommendations accessed in 2026. Other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have their own bitrate guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings. Leave headroom on your upload connection and test the stream at the settings you intend to use.

Send the playlist to YouTube and make it repeat
The playlist file defines sequence, but the complete repeat-and-stream command depends on your installed FFmpeg build, operating system, playlist paths, codecs, and chosen ingest settings. Check the options supported by your local build and validate a command with your actual files rather than copying a command that assumes a different setup. In particular, confirm that your build supports the repeat option you choose, that it applies to the concat input, and that the selected output settings satisfy YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
- Run a short test with the concat playlist and verify FFmpeg can open every entry and proceed from one clip to the next.
- Configure the output to use the YouTube stream URL and key, an ingest-compatible video and audio codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Enable repeating the playlist using the loop option supported by your FFmpeg build; verify it reaches the last clip and returns to the first.
- Start sending the feed and watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before publishing or leaving the process unattended.
Do not expose the stream key when sharing a command or log. If you keep it in a local script, restrict access to that file. Exact command syntax varies with FFmpeg version and platform; the FFmpeg format reference and your build’s help output are the appropriate places to verify option placement.

Test the stream and publishing controls
Before relying on a long-running broadcast, make a test with movement and audio similar to the real program. Confirm the preview appears, audio is audible, the playlist transition is clean, and the stream remains live. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing; a successful connection alone does not confirm that viewers receive the intended picture and sound.
Choose public, private, or unlisted deliberately in Studio, and manage scheduled streams and other channel settings there. Confirm that you have rights to every video and audio track. YouTube provides rights-management controls, but whether a particular recording may be streamed depends on the rights and permissions for that material.
Troubleshoot common failures
