How to Loop Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live Without Repeating One Twice

Use an OBS VLC Video playlist to play podcast episodes in order on YouTube Live. Keep shuffle off, inspect for duplicate files, and loop the list only if you want it to restart.

To play podcast episodes in order on a YouTube Live broadcast, put the episode files in an encoder playlist, turn shuffle off, and check that each file appears only once. In OBS, use a VLC Video source; enable Loop Playlist only if you want the full sequence to restart after its last episode. That setting repeats the configured list—it is not a duplicate detector.

First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from a live broadcast

YouTube’s playlist Loop button controls playback for someone watching a video or playlist in the YouTube player. It does not configure an encoder-fed live stream. For a live broadcast, an encoder sends its output to YouTube Live using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents these as separate functions: player playlist looping and encoder streaming.

A YouTube podcast is organized as a playlist, with episodes represented by videos. YouTube recommends placing full-length episodes in the order viewers should consume them. For an encoder-based live show, however, you must arrange the media in the encoder; the podcast playlist’s viewer controls do not sequence the live output. See YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.

Set up an ordered episode loop in OBS

  1. Prepare the episode files. Gather the local video files you intend to broadcast. Decide their order and keep a record of the list so you can check it before going live.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and select the episode files in the intended order. This source uses VLC Media Player, which must be installed. OBS describes the source and its playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.
  3. Keep Shuffle Playlist off. Shuffle randomizes file playback. Leave it off when you want a predictable episode order.
  4. Choose whether to loop the whole list. Turn Loop Playlist on if playback should start again at the beginning after the final file. Leave it off if the sequence should end after the last episode. Shuffle and loop are separate controls; looping the playlist repeats the configured list.
  5. Check for duplicate entries. Inspect the source’s file list and remove any accidental second entry for an episode. The documented loop control does not claim to detect duplicates or ensure each episode plays exactly once per cycle.
  6. Test before the broadcast. Run the playlist and confirm the order, transitions, video, and audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality before and during a live event; see Streaming tips.

OBS’s broader Sources Guide explains how sources fit into a scene. The VLC playlist options above are the controls that determine episode order and whether the complete list repeats.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as confidential: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address.
  3. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  4. Check the preview and stream health, then start the live event in Live Control Room.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. When it is finished, end the event and stop the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

For the current interface and encoder workflow, follow YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.

What “without repeating twice” can and cannot mean

With Shuffle Playlist off and no duplicate file entries, OBS can play the configured episodes in order and then—if Loop Playlist is enabled—start that sequence again after the final file. It cannot infer that two differently named files contain the same episode, and the documented controls do not promise exactly-once playback. Review the list yourself, especially if files were copied, renamed, or added in multiple batches.

If you do not want any episode to repeat during the event, turn Loop Playlist off. If the broadcast must continue after the final episode, looping the list necessarily starts the sequence over; plan the playlist length and tell viewers when the sequence restarts if that matters to them.

Alternative for scheduled prerecorded playback

YouTube’s encoder guidance names AJA PlayToStream as an option for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The cited guidance does not establish that it prevents duplicate episodes or provides an exactly-once playlist setting. Confirm the device’s current capabilities before choosing it.
