To loop a podcast recording in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source and enable Loop in the source properties. That setting repeats the file when it ends. For a playlist, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube with an encoder stream and check the preview before going live.
Loop one podcast recording with Media Source
- Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should show the podcast.
- Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, then browse to your audio or video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
- Enable repetition. In the source properties, check Loop. OBS starts the file again after playback reaches the end.
- Set activation behavior separately. If you want the file to start from the beginning when it becomes visible in the current scene, enable Restart playback when source becomes active. This is not the loop setting: it controls what happens when the source becomes active, while Loop repeats the file at its end.
- Check visibility and audio. If the source is hidden or belongs to another scene, verify when it becomes visible and whether playback should restart then. For a video with embedded sound, confirm that the source’s audio appears in OBS’s audio mixer.
Show nothing when playback ends is mainly relevant when a file is not set to loop and you want it to disappear after finishing. With looping enabled, playback is expected to continue.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video Source
Use VLC Video Source when you need several recordings to play in sequence or need VLC’s extended media support. OBS uses VLC libraries for this source, so VLC must be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Install VLC, matching its 64-bit or 32-bit version to your OBS installation.
- In the OBS scene, add a VLC Video Source.
- Add the podcast files to its playlist in the desired order.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the last item.
- Check the playlist’s picture and sound in OBS before connecting to YouTube.
For a single recording, Media Source is the simpler option. Choose VLC when the job calls for a playlist or VLC-specific format support. OBS documents both source types in its Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube and prepare the broadcast
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Eligibility and interface steps can change, so check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before publishing.
- Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the stream destination and key.
- Configure OBS’s stream connection. Enter the destination and stream key as directed by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a screen recording or share it.
- Choose encoder settings for your output. YouTube’s recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and network capacity. Use its current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the format you intend to send; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Test before going public. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and test the complete scene with representative movement and audio. Make sure your upload capacity has headroom: YouTube recommends 20% beyond the total stream bitrate. Monitor picture, sound and stream-health messages while live. Its streaming tips cover testing and bandwidth.
A loop in OBS only repeats local media; it does not by itself create or connect a YouTube live broadcast. The channel setup, encoder connection and live preview are separate parts of the workflow.
Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems
- The file plays once and stops: Reopen the source properties and check Loop. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist.
- Playback does not restart when you switch to the scene: For Media Source, check Restart playback when source becomes active and confirm the source is visible in the current scene. For VLC, inspect its visibility and playback behavior.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS).
- The picture appears but the podcast is silent: Check that the source’s audio is active in OBS’s mixer, then listen to the YouTube preview with suitable audio monitoring.
- The YouTube preview or stream is unhealthy: Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance, verify upload headroom, and read the stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Test again with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast.
