OBS plays the file in the scene, but the outgoing live stream still needs to be encoded with settings YouTube accepts. “Without re-encoding” here means skipping a separate pre-stream conversion—not sending the MP4 unchanged to YouTube.
Loop one MP4 in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or create one for the video.
- Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Give it a name, then select the local MP4 file. OBS lists MP4 among its supported video formats. (OBS Media Sources)
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS replays the file when playback completes.
- Check the scene. Confirm that the video appears in the preview and that its audio is present in the OBS mixer. A file’s container being MP4 does not guarantee every codec or file will decode smoothly on every system.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Start the stream from OBS and check the YouTube preview and stream health before sharing it with viewers.
This approach avoids exporting a second copy of the source file just to make it repeat. OBS still has to produce an encoded live output; it is not a bit-for-bit pass-through of the MP4.
Loop several MP4 files as a playlist
For a sequence of recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than creating a separate Media Source for each file. Add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled if you want it to start again after the last item. OBS also documents a Shuffle Playlist option. (OBS Media Sources)
VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to work. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you only need one file to repeat, Media Source is the simpler choice and does not require VLC for playlist handling.

Set the outgoing stream for YouTube
In OBS, use the YouTube stream connection and choose an encoder configuration compatible with YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommended video bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube table instead of treating one bitrate as universal. (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
- Video: Choose a listed codec and a resolution and frame rate your setup can sustain. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: Set CBR and use the bitrate recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists stereo AAC or MP3; its listed stereo setting is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz at 384 kbps and limits 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS to AAC.
These are encoder-output settings, not instructions to alter the local MP4. YouTube also transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, which is separate from whether you pre-convert your source file.

Use RTMPS for the ordinary OBS workflow
For a typical OBS-to-YouTube setup, RTMPS is the straightforward secure ingest route. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL/TLS. The latency available depends on the stream configuration; choosing the protocol alone does not guarantee a specific delay. (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison)
HLS and DASH are not shortcuts for pointing YouTube at an MP4 and asking it to loop the file. They are segment-based ingest workflows with their own encoder and packaging requirements. For example, YouTube HLS requires HTTPS, a changing media playlist, muxed audio and video in M2TS segments, H.264 or HEVC video, and AAC audio. YouTube recommends HLS segments of one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds. HLS and DASH generally have higher latency than RTMP. Test playback and monitor the live stream
Before relying on a repeating stream, test it with representative video motion and audio, including a transition at the point where the file loops. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health in Live Control Room. Watch for audio dropouts, a black frame, or a pause at the loop point, and confirm the YouTube preview is receiving the stream. (YouTube encoder settings)
Troubleshoot common problems
- The file will not open or plays incorrectly: MP4 is a container, not a guarantee that every contained codec works in every OBS build or operating system. Check the file’s codecs and try a compatible export if OBS cannot decode it reliably.
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- There is no audio in the live output: Check that the source is not muted, that its audio appears in the OBS mixer, and that the correct audio track is included in the stream output.
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable or fails to load: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem: Verify the stream key, encoder connection, CBR setting, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance. Check Live Control Room for the reported health issue.
- The stream is delayed: RTMPS does not promise a fixed latency. YouTube’s available latency modes depend on the configuration, and segment-based HLS or DASH workflows generally add more latency than RTMP.
Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on
OBS is the do-it-yourself option when you want to run the loop from your own computer. If you want a prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
