To repeat one compatible gaming VOD indefinitely, put FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i, then use -c copy to pass its existing encoded streams through without decoding or re-encoding. For a sequence of VODs, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer instead. Neither method makes incompatible files YouTube-ready: first check the video and audio streams, timestamps, and YouTube’s ingest requirements.
What stream-copy can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s -c copy copies compressed packets rather than decoding and encoding them. That avoids re-encode quality loss and is very fast, but it does not repair a source file, change its codec, bitrate, resolution, keyframes or frame rate, or let you apply filters. A source/container combination can also fail if the output container cannot represent its streams. See the FFmpeg documentation.
So “without re-encoding” is conditional: use copy mode only when the source’s streams and encoded properties already suit the output container and YouTube’s current ingest profile. If they do not, prepare a compatible file by re-encoding or choose another workflow; stream-copy cannot make that change.
Check your VODs before building the command
Inspect each file with a media probe such as ffprobe before relying on copy mode. Record its container, video and audio codecs, number and type of streams, time bases, duration, and timestamps. For a playlist, compare those details across every file. No single command is guaranteed to work for every uninspected gaming VOD.

- Confirm that the file has the video and audio streams you intend to send, and note any additional streams that might need explicit mapping or exclusion.
- Check whether the source’s video and audio codecs and encoded properties meet your chosen YouTube ingest profile.
- For a concat playlist, confirm that the inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases.
- Check durations and timestamp continuity, especially when files were recorded or edited differently. Incorrect duration information or streams with unequal lengths can lead to timestamp artifacts or gaps.
Loop one VOD indefinitely
Use this as a command pattern, not a guarantee for every file. Replace the input and output placeholders, choose an output container appropriate for the source streams, and configure the YouTube destination as described below.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -c copy -f flv "YOUR_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the -i it applies to. -c copy requests stream-copy. The example’s FLV output is only a pattern: validate that the input streams can be carried by your chosen output container and that the URL and protocol match the server settings in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish or share a real stream key.

Stop the local FFmpeg process when you want to end the feed. The infinite input loop does not by itself configure or guarantee a YouTube live session.
Play several VODs in order
For a playlist, make a text file listing the inputs in the intended sequence, then pass it to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. For example, save this as playlist.txt:

file 'part-03.mp4'Use paths that resolve from the directory where FFmpeg runs, or provide full paths. The playlist syntax and quoting must suit your filenames. Then use a command pattern such as:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt" -c copy -f flv "YOUR_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"The concat demuxer presents the files sequentially as one input. FFmpeg requires matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases for this no-re-encode approach. The -re option reads at the input’s native rate, which is useful for sending a file as a live feed rather than as fast as the machine can read it. Validate the command, path-safety implications of -safe 0, output container, and actual file compatibility before going live. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation explains timestamp adjustment; inaccurate file durations can cause artifacts, and differing stream lengths can create gaps. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes this demuxer approach from concatenation with a filter, which is not the stream-copy route.

Match YouTube’s live ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS as protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). These are ingest recommendations, not settings FFmpeg can impose on already-encoded packets in copy mode. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings page before a broadcast because platform guidance can change.
For H.264, YouTube’s published figures include the following examples. They apply to the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate shown—not to other profiles or codecs.

If your file’s codec or encoded settings do not fit the profile you need, copy mode cannot convert them. Decide whether preserving the existing stream matters more than conforming to another ingest profile; if YouTube compatibility requires changing the stream, make a suitable prepared version rather than expecting stream-copy to alter it.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface.
- Enter the URL and key in your local encoder configuration. Keep the key private like a password: do not place it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or examples. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls.
- Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS extension to RTMP.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream and check both picture and audio, transitions or loop boundaries, and YouTube’s stream-health status before relying on the setup.
Allow enough upload bandwidth and monitor the feed
Compare the stream’s outgoing bitrate with the stable upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and testing the connection before streaming. A speed test is only a point-in-time reading; a shared or unstable connection may perform differently during the broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips. Monitor stream health during the session, not only at startup.
Choose between one file, a playlist, and re-encoding

Troubleshooting common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the output or reports unsupported streams: The source streams may not fit the selected container or destination. Recheck codecs and stream types; use a compatible output/container mapping, or prepare a conforming file if conversion is necessary.
- YouTube reports an unsupported or unhealthy stream: Compare the actual source codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate with YouTube’s current profile for that resolution and codec. Copy mode cannot correct a mismatch.
- The playlist fails at a file boundary: Compare each input’s stream layout, codec, and time base. Confirm the playlist order and paths, inspect duration and timestamp metadata, and test with the exact files; concat demuxing does not make mismatched inputs identical.
- There is a gap, jump, or audio discontinuity between files: Check whether audio and video streams have unequal lengths and whether duration or timestamps are accurate. FFmpeg notes that concat timestamp adjustment can expose such issues; test the sequence locally and in a private or unlisted stream.
- The stream starts but drops or buffers: Check the selected URL/key, YouTube Live Control Room state, stream health, and sustained upload capacity. Leave the recommended bandwidth headroom and test under the connection conditions you expect during the live session.
- The video or audio is missing: Inspect stream count and types, then validate explicit stream mapping for the intended output. Do not assume every file contains only one video and one audio stream.
