That repeats the selected playlist, but it does not guarantee unattended 24/7 playback: YouTube may interrupt long sessions, and the Pi still depends on power, network access and working playback.
How do I loop a YouTube playlist on a Raspberry Pi 5?
Use Raspberry Pi OS with its desktop browser, open a video that belongs to the playlist you want, then turn on the playlist’s Loop control. YouTube’s computer instructions say the playlist repeats continuously when Loop is enabled. YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists on a computer.
- Install Raspberry Pi OS. Write the OS to a microSD card, which stores the operating system and files, then set up the Pi 5 with a display and audio device for the room. Raspberry Pi describes Raspberry Pi OS as its official free operating system and its 64-bit version as intended for newer models, including Pi 5. - Use a suitable power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5, rated at 5 V and 5 A. Its documentation says a 5 V, 3 A supply limits power available to peripherals to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance.
- Open the playlist on YouTube. In the desktop browser, go to a video in the intended playlist. Expand the playlist box and click Loop. Check that the playlist repeat control is enabled; repeating one video is not the same as repeating the playlist.
- Check the room setup. Confirm that the video plays, audio is at a suitable level, the right stories are in the playlist, the network connection works and the display behaves as you want before leaving the system unattended.
Loop or Autoplay: which should I use?

How do I keep bedtime stories playing overnight?
Enable playlist Loop and test the complete setup, but treat it as a way to repeat content—not a guarantee that playback will continue unattended all night or around the clock. The Pi needs working power and network access, and the browser and YouTube playback must remain available. The sources here do not establish a Raspberry Pi browser configuration for automatic restart after a failure or guaranteed 24/7 uptime.

YouTube says it may show a “Continue watching?” prompt during uninterrupted Autoplay sessions: after 60 minutes on the web and 180 minutes on TV. This is a reason not to rely on Autoplay as an unattended overnight mechanism. See YouTube Help: “Continue watching?”.
Check before leaving it running
- Make sure the intended stories are in the selected playlist and that playlist Loop—not just single-video repeat—is enabled.
- Verify audio output and volume on the actual speaker or display.
- Confirm that the Pi has a stable power source and that the room’s network reaches it.
- Decide whether the display should remain on; the setup instructions above do not guarantee any particular screen or browser behavior.
Does Raspberry Pi 5 need cooling for YouTube playback?
Cooling is optional for normal use, not a prerequisite established for this task. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 guidance says YouTube viewing is less demanding than its heavy CPU stress test and that cooling is optional for normal usage. What if YouTube stops or the playlist does not repeat?
- The next video is a recommendation, not the next playlist item: Autoplay may be active while playlist Loop is not. Return to the playlist controls and enable Loop.
- The same story repeats instead of the full playlist: Check that you enabled the playlist’s Loop control rather than single-video repeat.
- Playback pauses during a long session: YouTube documents a “Continue watching?” prompt during Autoplay viewing. Resume playback and do not treat Autoplay as a guarantee of uninterrupted unattended viewing.
- There is no sound: Check the selected audio device, its connection and volume, then test playback again.
- The Pi or browser has lost playback: Check power and network access, then reopen YouTube and restore the playlist. Automatic recovery after power, browser or network interruption is not established here.
Check playlist content and rights
YouTube’s playlist policy disallows certain playlist practices, including misleading titles or descriptions and some collections of otherwise individual videos. The policy does not determine whether you have the rights to a particular bedtime-story recording. Use content you are permitted to play and ensure the playlist accurately describes what it contains.
