To loop a guided sleep meditation on YouTube Live with OBS, add your recording as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist of files, add a VLC Video source, install VLC first, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, and start the broadcast. Rehearse the whole setup before relying on it overnight: looping a file does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to use live streaming. Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. You can schedule a stream there if you want to configure it ahead of time and share its watch page.
Clear the rights to every file
Use meditation audio and visuals you made or have permission to use for a public livestream and any archive that results. YouTube can terminate live streams for copyright violations, and archived streams may receive Content ID claims. A file playing on repeat does not make it copyright-safe.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are different questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams; repetitive or mass-produced material without meaningful variation or value may be ineligible. That does not mean every meditation loop violates policy, but a technically valid stream is not by itself a guarantee of monetization.

Choose a single file or a playlist
| Source choice | Best for | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local recording that should repeat | Select the file and enable Loop in the source properties |
| VLC Video | Several local files that should play in sequence | Install VLC, add the files as a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist |
OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, WAV, and OGG. Its VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for source details. Exact property labels can vary with the installed OBS version.
Set up a looping source in OBS
Loop one video or audio file
- Open OBS and select the scene you intend to stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and confirm.
- In the source properties, choose the local file. Enable Loop, then confirm the properties.
- Check the preview. Make sure the picture is framed as intended; if the source is audio-only, confirm that your scene still has an appropriate visual.
Loop multiple files as a playlist
- Install VLC before adding the source. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the meditation files to the playlist in the desired order.
- Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as on by default, but check the property rather than relying on the default.
- Preview the scene and let the playlist advance between files once. Check that each item has both the expected audio and picture, if applicable.
For either source, play through a complete cycle and listen to the transition. A loop setting only tells OBS what to do when playback ends; it cannot fix an abrupt edit, silence, a mismatched volume, or a file that fails to decode.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. For a planned overnight session, scheduling it in advance gives you time to test the encoder feed.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if the option is available, and follow the prompts to connect your channel.
- If you are configuring the encoder manually, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the YouTube stream into OBS. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream-key guidance.
- Apply the settings and start streaming from OBS early enough for YouTube’s preview to appear. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before selecting Go live where applicable.
Use sustainable encoder and upload settings
For a basic SDR meditation stream, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR rate control, AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval recommendation; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. A still or gently animated visual may not need 60 fps: choose settings your computer can encode and your connection can sustain. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee for every setup. Check the current encoder settings before going live.
| YouTube H.264 video example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
Those figures are YouTube’s listed values for H.264 at 1080p30, not universal targets for every resolution or frame rate. If your upload connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution and bitrate, lower them rather than sending a feed that repeatedly drops frames.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- In OBS output settings, use CBR and set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; keep it at or below YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum.
- Choose H.264 for a standard SDR stream and AAC or MP3 for audio.
- Test your actual upload capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. Its encoder settings and streaming tips explain the platform guidance.
- Run OBS with the same audio and video sources you plan to use. A speed test alone does not establish that the whole encoder and network chain will remain stable.
Preflight, go live, and end the broadcast
Test before the sleep session
- Play the source long enough to observe a loop or playlist transition.
- Listen for clipping, silence, abrupt volume changes, or unintended gaps. Check the video framing and whether the visual remains suitable throughout.
- Start OBS streaming early, wait for YouTube’s preview, and inspect stream health before you make the event public or select Go live.
- Where practical, rehearse for the intended duration. An all-night run depends on the computer, files, network, and stream configuration; the loop option alone does not promise it will continue without interruption.
- Have a way to check on the stream and restart the encoder if the connection or OBS stops. Do not leave the stream unmonitored on the assumption that playback will recover by itself.
Stop cleanly and understand archiving
When the session is over, end the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived; if retaining a replay matters, plan the session length accordingly and verify the archive afterward. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One file stops at the end | Loop is off on the Media Source | Open that source’s properties and enable Loop; test the end-to-start transition. |
| Playlist will not load or play | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and test the VLC Video source. |
| YouTube receives no encoder feed | Wrong stream URL or key, or the encoder has not started | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the selected stream in Live Control Room. If the key may be exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. |
| Preview buffers, drops frames, or stream health degrades | Bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, or the network or computer is unstable | Check OBS and YouTube stream health, reduce resolution or bitrate, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, and test again. |
| Video or audio is missing in the preview | Wrong source, file issue, scene layout, or muted/incorrect audio routing | Play the source locally, verify the selected OBS scene and source visibility, and check OBS audio meters and output before restarting. |
| Stream ends unexpectedly | OBS, the computer, or the network stopped sending the feed | Check the encoder and connection, restore the feed, and use Live Control Room to confirm the event status. A loop does not restart a stopped stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer or connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
