If your YouTube Live stream stutters at 60 fps, first check whether OBS is dropping frames. For H.264, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps at 1080p60, 34 Mbps at 1440p60, or 50 Mbps at 4K60; use a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Those are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee your connection can sustain them. Test with representative audio and movement, then use OBS statistics and YouTube stream health to identify whether the problem is your upload connection, local encoding, or viewers’ playback conditions.
Use settings that match your resolution, codec, and connection
Sixty frames per second is supported by YouTube, but it does not call for one universal bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder-settings table recommends the following bitrates for 60 fps input. They are platform recommendations, not proof that your upload route, encoder, or viewers can handle them smoothly. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (page inspected October 3, 2026).
| Ingest resolution at 60 fps | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | Listed minimum: H.264 | Listed minimum: AV1/H.265 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps | Not stated in the cited table | Not stated in the cited table |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K60 | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
The recommendation depends on both resolution and codec. Pick a resolution your content needs and your sustained upload can support; a higher target bitrate is not automatically a smoother or more accessible stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, but your encoder and streaming setup must support the codec you select.
Set the encoder baseline for YouTube Live
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to encoder and setup support.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
These are platform-level settings, not a universal OBS preset. The available encoder choices and labels can vary by OBS version, operating system, and hardware. The cited guidance does not establish one CPU/GPU preset that fixes local overload. If the stream stutters, inspect OBS statistics and logs before changing hardware-specific settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Run a representative test before the broadcast
- Check sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test, but do not treat a single result as proof that the connection will remain stable throughout a stream.
- Use the intended output settings. Set the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval in your encoder.
- Test the actual content. YouTube recommends including audio and movement similar to what you will have during the live stream. A static screen is not a representative test for a fast-moving broadcast.
- Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Note when the stutter occurs and whether OBS reports dropped frames or other missed-frame categories. Keep the OBS log from the affected session.
- Change one variable at a time. If you lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, repeat the test before deciding whether the change helped.
A title alone cannot identify a particular computer, encoder, upload route, or failure mode. A useful diagnosis starts with the counters and messages recorded during the stutter.
If OBS reports dropped frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. That points first to the connection between your encoder and YouTube’s ingest server, not necessarily to a weak PC. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests a lower video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic. It is not a guaranteed safe value: upload capacity can fluctuate, and the bitrate must also fit YouTube’s settings guidance.

- Try a lower bitrate that the connection can sustain consistently, then run another representative test.
- If available, test another ingest server.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, try a wired connection. OBS identifies wireless instability and interference as possible causes.
- Check whether a VPN, security tool, or network-prioritization software could be interfering with the connection.
- Consider outdated network drivers or faults in the modem, router, cables, network card, switch, or extender. Diagnose first; do not replace equipment solely because the stream stutters.
- If connection troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP.
If OBS shows no dropped frames but viewers see buffering
The broadcaster’s connection can be stable while some viewers still buffer. Viewers use different networks, devices, and locations, and a high-bitrate or high-resolution stream may be inaccessible to some of them. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not make every viewer’s bandwidth or device equivalent. You can test a lower resolution, bitrate, or frame rate if accessibility for your audience matters more than preserving the highest input specification. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, dated June 9, 2021, also addresses viewer-side buffering.
If the problem appears to be local rendering or encoding
Use the OBS statistics and log to distinguish local rendering or encoding misses from network-dropped frames. Reduce output demands one variable at a time and test again. The available platform and OBS guidance does not establish a universal CPU/GPU setting or preset that will solve local overload, so avoid changing encoder settings or upgrading a PC without evidence of which stage is failing.

For device-specific help, collect the OBS log, system and encoder model, output resolution, and the statistic identifying whether missed frames are attributed to rendering or encoding. That information is needed before a hardware-specific recommendation can be meaningful.
Choose 60 fps in light of the content and audience
Compare the visual benefit of 60 fps with the demands it places on encoding, upload capacity, and viewer playback. A constrained connection or encoding system may call for a lower resolution, bitrate, or frame rate. Likewise, if viewers report buffering while OBS has no dropped frames, consider whether the input demands suit the audience’s range of networks and devices. YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but support does not mean 60 fps is the right tradeoff for every stream.
