The simplest way to load a DRM-free ebook onto a Kindle is to send its EPUB file through Amazon Send to Kindle. Amazon converts the upload for Kindle delivery; after it arrives, connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync its library. For offline transfers or more control over formatting, convert the file to AZW3 with Calibre and transfer it by USB—after checking your Kindle model’s USB requirements.
Check the file before you send it
DRM, or digital rights management, is technology that restricts how an ebook can be opened, copied, or transferred. A DRM-free file can generally be used on compatible devices without being tied to one seller’s app or account. That does not mean the book is free of charge or copyright: DRM-free describes access restrictions, not price or ownership.
Look at the file extension you received. EPUB is the best starting point for most ordinary, text-based books; PDF is often used for documents with fixed page designs; and AZW3 is a Kindle-oriented format useful for local transfer. MOBI is an older format and is not the best default for a new transfer. Amazon’s current personal-document list includes EPUB and PDF, among other formats, but an EPUB sent through Send to Kindle is converted before delivery—it is not necessarily read as a raw EPUB file by the Kindle. Likewise, a book that opens only in a seller’s app may be protected even if the product page calls it an ebook. Send to Kindle and Calibre are not ways to bypass DRM. Use the seller’s authorized reading or download route, or obtain a version explicitly offered without DRM.

Choose a format that suits the book

Send an ebook with Amazon’s web uploader
For most readers, the web uploader is the quickest route: it accepts EPUB and other supported personal-document formats, shows the upload workflow, and can deliver the book to Kindle devices or apps on the account. Amazon says personal-document delivery has no additional charge; check its current personal-document terms for details.
- Save the DRM-free ebook on your computer. Choose EPUB if the publisher or bookseller provides one and the book is an ordinary reflowable ebook.
- Open Send to Kindle and sign in to the Amazon account registered to your Kindle.
- Use the upload or send-file option and select the ebook. Amazon lists EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, HTML, RTF, TXT, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP as supported personal-document formats in its format guidance.
- Choose the Kindle device or app that should receive the document, if the page offers a destination choice, then submit the upload.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi, make sure Airplane Mode is off, and sync or refresh its library. Check All, Documents, or the equivalent personal-document view.
The delivered book may be labeled a personal document rather than a Kindle Store purchase. It can be available in the Kindle library without matching every Store-book feature: metadata, cover display, search, annotations, and reading-position synchronization may differ. Do not assume that every personal document syncs or behaves identically across devices.
Send the file by email
Email is convenient when the file is already on a computer or phone. Each compatible Kindle device or app has a unique Send to Kindle email address. Amazon explains the email route and account setup in its Send to Kindle delivery help.

- Find the device’s Send to Kindle email address in the Amazon account’s device settings.
- Add the address you will send from to the approved personal-document email list in your Amazon account.
- From that approved address, compose an email to the Kindle address and attach the DRM-free ebook in a supported format.
- Send the message, then connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync the library.
If delivery fails, check that the sender is approved, the destination address is correct, the attachment is supported and within Amazon’s current size limit, and the file is not DRM-protected. Amazon lists a 200 MB per-file limit for the transfer workflow described in its transfer guidance; limits and interfaces can change. If the email gives you little indication of where the process failed, try the web uploader instead.
Use the Send to Kindle desktop app
Amazon also lists desktop applications for Windows and Mac as ways to send documents to a Kindle library. This can be handy for sending several local files without returning to the web uploader each time; consult Amazon’s supported delivery methods for the current app options. Since desktop interfaces can change, follow the labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on an old walkthrough.
Do not confuse the Send to Kindle utility with a Kindle reading app. Amazon says the legacy Windows app formerly known as Kindle for PC is no longer supported as of June 30, 2026; that change is described in its Windows app support notice.

Transfer a book by USB
USB avoids sending the file through Amazon and can work offline, but it is not a guaranteed, identical process on every Kindle. Amazon’s current guidance says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application—such as Send to Kindle for macOS—for USB file transfers. Check the instructions for your exact model and computer before relying on a cable; Amazon’s USB transfer guidance also provides a route to identify a Kindle.

Typical local transfer
- If your Kindle and computer support direct file transfer, connect them with a data-capable USB cable and wake the Kindle.
- Open the Kindle drive in your computer’s file manager and locate its
documentsfolder. - Copy a compatible ebook file into that folder. For a reliable local workflow, convert a DRM-free EPUB to AZW3 first with Calibre, then copy the resulting file.
- Safely eject the Kindle and allow it time to index the new book.
Direct transfer keeps the copy on the device, but a USB-loaded book may not sync to your other Kindle apps or devices. Covers and metadata can also be inconsistent, and malformed files may index slowly or not appear. EPUB handling varies by model and firmware, so do not assume that copying an EPUB directly is equivalent to sending it through Amazon’s conversion service.
Convert or organize books with Calibre
Calibre is ebook-management software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can organize accessible ebook files, edit metadata, and convert formats such as EPUB to AZW3. It cannot make a DRM-protected book into an authorized DRM-free file. See the Calibre conversion documentation.

Convert an EPUB to AZW3
- Download and install Calibre from its official download page.
- Open Calibre, choose Add books, and select the DRM-free EPUB.
- Select the book in the library and choose Convert books.
- Set the output format to AZW3. Review the title, author, cover, and table-of-contents metadata before converting.
- Start the conversion. Transfer the AZW3 by USB if your Kindle model supports that workflow, or use Send to Kindle if you prefer cloud delivery.
Conversion processes the ebook’s internal structure; changing a filename from .epub to .azw3 does not convert it. Use Calibre when you need metadata cleanup, batch management, a local library, or a better result after a poor conversion. If a normal EPUB already looks good after Send to Kindle, adding another conversion step is unnecessary and can introduce new formatting problems.
Choose the transfer method that fits

Troubleshoot common problems
The book does not appear in the library
- Confirm the Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account used to send the file and that you selected the intended device or app.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, disable Airplane Mode, and sync or refresh the library.
- Allow time for processing, then check Documents or the personal-document view as well as the main book list.
- Check that the upload completed, the file is supported and not corrupted, and the source is not DRM-protected.
Amazon has separate troubleshooting guidance for Send to Kindle and personal-document delivery.
The upload is rejected
Confirm the file extension is one Amazon accepts, the upload is within the current size limit, and the file is a finished ebook rather than an ACSM authorization file. If it is a valid DRM-free EPUB that still fails, try opening it in Calibre to check that it is readable, or ask the seller for another supported format.

The EPUB opens but the layout is wrong
Invalid EPUB structure, a missing table of contents, unusual fonts, excessive CSS, fixed-layout content packaged as reflowable, image encoding, or complex footnotes, tables, and columns can all complicate conversion. Open the EPUB in Calibre or another EPUB editor, verify its cover and metadata, simplify unusual fonts or styling if appropriate, then rebuild or reconvert and send it again. For a document whose exact page design matters, a readable PDF may be preferable, though it will not reflow like a novel.
The cover is missing
The EPUB may not declare a cover image in its metadata, or conversion may have dropped it. Check the cover metadata in Calibre, reconvert, and resend. A device may also need time to finish indexing, particularly after a direct USB transfer.
The title appears under Documents
That is normal for sideloaded content. It identifies the item as a personal document rather than a Kindle Store purchase and does not by itself indicate a failed transfer.
USB does not show the Kindle drive or the book
Check that the cable carries data, not just power, and verify the exact model’s transfer instructions. Newer hardware may require Amazon’s separate USB-transfer application. If the file is on the device but does not appear, confirm it is in the documents folder, is in a format that model accepts, and is not malformed; safely eject and give the Kindle time to index it.
Obtain a legitimate DRM-free copy
Use a file you are authorized to read and transfer. DRM-free books can be sold commercially as well as distributed at no charge. For example, Baen’s DRM policy describes its DRM-free catalog; Standard Ebooks provides carefully formatted public-domain works, including EPUB and AZW3; and Project Gutenberg offers free public-domain ebooks in formats including EPUB and Kindle files. Availability and rights depend on the title and jurisdiction, so check the source’s terms.
If the ebook is an Amazon Kindle Store purchase, do not assume it can be exported. Amazon says that, effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF files for qualifying DRM-free books through Manage Your Content and Devices. This applies only to qualifying titles, not every Kindle purchase or borrowed Kindle Unlimited book; see Amazon’s DRM-free Kindle book policy. For a library ebook, follow the library’s and publisher’s authorized Kindle-delivery instructions: loan files may use DRM or another authorization system and may not be transferable as ordinary EPUBs.
