To stream live video from a phone through Larix to Wowza, create a destination in Wowza, copy its RTMP server address and stream name into Larix, start the broadcast, then test both the Wowza ingest and viewer playback. The exact address and stream name depend on your Wowza setup—do not reuse a sample URL as though it were universal.
What you need before you start
- A phone running iOS 16.0 or later, or Android 7.0 or later, according to Softvelum’s Larix platform information. Device encoder support and advanced features can vary.
- Larix Broadcaster installed on the phone.
- A configured Wowza destination and its connection details. The procedure below follows the RTMP workflow for Wowza Streaming Engine; Wowza Video is a separate hosted workflow with its own connection information.
- A stable network at the location where you will broadcast. Test there before an important stream.
Larix is the phone-side encoder; Wowza receives the stream. Larix documents H.264/AVC video and AAC audio as its standard encoding path, while Wowza lists H.264/AAC-family RTMP inputs. Use formats supported by the actual destination configuration.
Get the RTMP details from Wowza
For Wowza Streaming Engine
Identify the server address, port, application name, and stream name expected by your Streaming Engine application. Wowza documents 1935 as the default RTMP streaming port, but an installation can use a different port. Its general RTMP endpoint format is rtmp://[address]:[port]/[application]; the stream name is supplied separately. Follow the connection settings for your own instance, rather than assuming that the default port or a sample address applies. See Wowza’s connection URL documentation.
For Wowza Video
Use the live-stream setup workflow to create or select the hosted destination and obtain its encoder connection details. Those values come from the Wowza Video setup, not from a Streaming Engine server. Consult Wowza Video’s live-stream setup documentation and encoder connection instructions.

Set up Larix and start the phone stream
- Create a connection in Larix. Open Larix Broadcaster, add a connection, and enter the RTMP URL supplied by your Wowza destination. Enter the stream name or key in the field expected by the destination. Larix describes the server/application URL and stream name together as the connection information; exact field labels may vary by app version. See Larix documentation.
- Keep the stream name and credentials private. Treat a stream key as a credential: do not post it in screenshots, public examples, or messages to people who do not need access.
- Choose compatible encoding. H.264 video and AAC audio are documented-compatible starting choices for this workflow. Match any restrictions shown for your specific Wowza application or hosted destination.
- Set resolution and bitrate for your connection. Larix’s FAQ lists vendor bitrate suggestions by resolution in the table below. They are encoder targets, not promises that a cellular connection can sustain them. The same FAQ says to halve the listed values for HEVC and multiply them by 1.6 for 50 fps or higher. These are Softvelum’s configuration suggestions; the FAQ page does not state a publication year. They are not independent benchmarks or a fixed upload-speed requirement. If the stream loses frames or stalls, lower the target bitrate or resolution and test again on the same network.
- Start broadcasting. Select the saved destination in Larix and start the stream. Confirm that the Wowza application or source monitor shows the incoming source. The older Wowza Larix tutorial demonstrates the conceptual local Streaming Engine workflow; current interface screens may differ.
- Test playback separately. A successful publish only confirms that Wowza is receiving the source. Test the playback URL and protocol configured for viewers as a separate step. Wowza’s example tutorial uses Larix Player for HLS playback. Construct the viewer URL from the appropriate server, application, and stream name, following Wowza’s playback and connection guidance; an application’s default instance may be implicit.
RTMP or SRT: use the protocol the destination expects
RTMP is the documented Larix-to-Streaming Engine example described above. Larix also supports SRT publishing modes, including Caller/Push, Listen, and Rendezvous. SRT is not a drop-in replacement for an RTMP URL: use it only when the Wowza destination is configured to accept SRT and you have the matching connection parameters. Support options can differ by Wowza product and deployment, so check the actual destination rather than assuming every account exposes the same inputs. Larix protocol support is described by Softvelum; Wowza’s supported RTMP inputs are documented at Wowza’s protocol and encoder reference.

Choose settings and workflow for the job
Self-managed Streaming Engine versus hosted Wowza Video
With Streaming Engine, use the values configured on your server; this gives you a self-managed workflow but requires you to obtain the correct server and application details. Wowza Video provides connection information through its hosted setup. Neither choice is universally better: consider how much server administration you want, which ingest security and protocols your destination supports, the latency and recovery behavior you need, and how viewers will access playback. The cited setup information does not establish a universal price comparison.
Mobile network and framing
Run a short test from the broadcast location. Larix’s FAQ notes that worsening network conditions can cause frame loss for RTMP/RTSP and describes an adaptive-bitrate option. If quality or continuity degrades, reduce the bitrate or resolution; do not assume that a nominal network speed guarantees a stable stream. A tripod or adjustable mount, compatible external microphone, or power bank may help for a particular shoot, but these are optional accessories rather than Larix or Wowza requirements. Check connector and device compatibility before buying.

Troubleshooting common failures
- Larix cannot connect: Recheck the server address, port, application, stream name, and any credentials against the destination’s current connection details. Confirm the server is reachable from the phone’s network and that source security settings allow the connection.
- Wowza receives no source: Verify that Larix is actually broadcasting to the intended application and stream name. Check the Wowza application or source monitor and confirm that the destination expects the protocol you selected.
- Wowza shows the source, but viewers cannot play it: Test the configured playback URL and delivery protocol separately. Confirm the server, application, stream name, and any required application instance; a valid ingest does not prove playback is set up correctly.
- Video drops frames or looks unstable: Test on the same network and at the same location. Lower the resolution or bitrate, or use Larix’s adaptive-bitrate option where available; the selected bitrate is a target, not a guarantee of network capacity.
- RTMP settings do not work with SRT: They are different protocols. Obtain SRT-specific destination settings from Wowza and confirm that the selected deployment supports that input.
