The dependable, official way to keep YouTube playing after you lock your phone is a qualifying YouTube Premium membership in the YouTube app, or YouTube Music Premium in the YouTube Music app. YouTube Premium is the broader option for regular YouTube videos and includes YouTube Music Premium; Music Premium is aimed at songs and podcasts. Free background playback is limited, and browser workarounds are not a reliable substitute.
What “screen off” playback means
Background playback lets audio continue when you lock the phone, turn off its display, or switch to another app. You can listen through the phone speaker, headphones, a car stereo, or a Bluetooth speaker; with Bluetooth, the phone is still the playback source. Casting is different: once a cast starts, the receiving speaker or TV handles playback.
It is also different from picture-in-picture, which keeps a small video window visible, and from downloads, which store content for later playback. YouTube Music’s audio-only mode avoids loading video where supported; it is useful for listening and reducing video data, but is not the same feature as background play. YouTube outlines its Premium app benefits and background-play controls in its membership help.
Use YouTube Premium in the YouTube app
For ordinary YouTube videos—including interviews, lectures, documentaries, tutorials, and music videos—the official method is to be signed in to the Google account with an active YouTube Premium membership. Background play is available in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps for eligible signed-in members. Premium features and plan availability can vary by country, device, operating system, and plan.

- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the account with YouTube Premium.
- Start a video. Standard videos work; background play is not available in the Shorts player.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app. Audio should continue.
- Pause, resume, or skip using the lock-screen or system media controls. Depending on the device, controls may also appear in notifications or Control Center.
If playback stops, check Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Background play. Eligible Premium accounts normally have this set to Always on. Choose Off to disable the feature, or Headphones or external speakers to allow it only when an external audio output is connected. The setting names and menu placement may vary slightly by app version.
On iPhone and iPad
Use the YouTube or YouTube Music app: update it, sign in to the account with the membership, start playback, and lock the device. Use the lock-screen controls or Control Center to manage playback. YouTube’s mobile-browser instructions also tie browser background playback to Premium; they do not establish a universal free browser method (YouTube mobile-browser help).
If you purchased Premium through Apple, make sure the YouTube app is signed in to the same Google account associated with the purchase. YouTube’s membership troubleshooting guidance covers account and purchase issues.

On Android phones and tablets
The app procedure is the same: sign in to the subscribed account, start a video or track, then lock the device or leave the app. If playback fails only after the screen locks, check that YouTube is allowed to use background data and that the phone’s battery-management settings are not restricting it. Android manufacturers use different names and paths for battery and background-activity controls, so there is no single menu route that applies to every device.

Choose YouTube Music for music and podcasts
YouTube Music is the more natural app for songs, albums, playlists, remixes, covers, DJ sets, music videos, and podcasts. YouTube Music Premium includes background playback, ad-free on-demand music, downloads, and audio-only mode. Creator-embedded sponsorships or promotions can still be part of a video or podcast, and podcast advertising may still occur. See YouTube Music Premium benefits.

Most podcasts in YouTube Music can play in the background without membership, although regional and content-specific restrictions apply. This exception does not mean that ordinary YouTube videos or songs are generally available for free screen-off playback. Some podcast episodes may also not support audio-only downloads.
YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, so it is the broader choice if you want both the general YouTube video catalog and the music service. Casting YouTube Music to a Chromecast Audio or Google Cast-connected speaker is another listening setup: YouTube says playback can continue after leaving Chrome, closing the web app, or turning off the computer once casting is underway (YouTube Music casting help).

For most regular YouTube videos and music, YouTube does not document general free background playback in its mobile apps. A mobile-browser route is officially documented for Premium members. Tricks such as requesting a desktop site and restarting playback from the lock screen may work in some browser and operating-system combinations, but are unofficial and can stop working after an update; they are not a dependable solution.

There are two relevant qualifications. First, most podcasts in YouTube Music support free background playback, subject to regional and content restrictions. Second, YouTube Premium Lite may include background playback for most videos in supported markets, but its 2026 announcement excludes Shorts and music content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated content containing music-partner material. - Confirm the account and membership. In YouTube, open Profile picture → Paid memberships and confirm that the account playing the video has an active membership. If you subscribed through Apple, verify the account match as described in YouTube’s membership help.
- Check Background play. Open Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Background play and select Always on, unless you intentionally want the external-audio-only setting.
- Rule out content limits. Try a standard video rather than a Short. If music videos fail on Lite, the service’s music-content exclusion may explain it.
- Update and restart. Install the latest app version, force-close and reopen it, then restart the phone if needed.
- Check connectivity and background data. On Android, allow background data for YouTube. Test another network if playback is intermittent.
- Check competing audio and system restrictions. Another app may have taken over audio, or device battery management may be stopping YouTube. Also confirm notifications and media controls are allowed if the problem is missing lock-screen controls rather than interrupted sound.
- Test a different item and setup. Try another standard video and, if necessary, switch between the app and a supported Premium browser session to isolate whether the issue is content-specific or app-specific.
If downloaded content will not play, confirm you are still signed in to the account that downloaded it, the membership remains active, and the app has connected to the internet recently. Also check that the item remains available. Offline verification rules can differ by service and region, so do not assume one fixed validity period for every download.
Other ways to listen
If you already own legally obtained audio files, a local music player can provide predictable screen-off playback without a subscription or internet connection. It does not provide YouTube’s catalog, and downloading or extracting copyrighted YouTube audio is not a substitute. For a conventional music library, services such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music may suit your listening habits, but they do not enable arbitrary YouTube videos to play with the screen off.
