Yes—you can listen to music on Alexa without paying for Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify Premium, Pandora Premium, or another recurring music subscription. In the United States, compatible Alexa devices can play ad-supported Amazon Music playlists and stations, while free versions of Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn provide different combinations of mixes, radio, playlists, podcasts, and stations.
The trade-off is control: free services may include advertisements, limited skips, stations instead of exact songs, or music mixes rather than unrestricted on-demand playback. If you already own an Echo or another Alexa-enabled speaker, you do not need to buy anything to try these options.
What you need
You need an Alexa-enabled device, an internet connection, and the Alexa app. An existing Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, or compatible third-party Alexa speaker is enough. Buying a new Alexa smart speaker is optional, not a requirement for free listening.
This article describes the free listening options documented for the United States. Service availability, Alexa integration, advertising, skip limits, and free-tier features can change by country, account, device, and date.

Free music options on Alexa at a glance
| Service | What the free option is best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Music Free | Curated playlists and stations without linking another music account | Ad-supported selection rather than the full Unlimited catalog and unrestricted on-demand playback |
| Spotify Free | Curated playlists, personalized radio, playlist radio, podcasts, and music mixes based on an artist, album, or track | Premium is required for ad-free listening, unlimited skips, and unrestricted on-demand track or album playback |
| Pandora Free | Personalized artist, song, and genre stations | Station-oriented listening; Premium is required for full on-demand songs, albums, and fully customizable playlists |
| iHeartRadio Free | Live radio, artist stations, curated playlists, and podcasts | Designed primarily around radio and curated listening rather than unlimited song-by-song selection |
| TuneIn Free | FM, AM, internet radio, news, talk, and podcasts | Premium sports, premium news, and commercial-free music belong to the separate TuneIn Live service |
| Bluetooth from a phone or computer | Playing audio from an app, browser, local files, or a service without the Alexa integration you want | Playback is usually controlled from the source device, not entirely by Alexa voice commands |
How to link a free music service to Alexa
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Link New Service.
- Select Spotify, Pandora, or another available service.
- Sign in to the service and authorize account linking.
- Return to Music & Podcasts, open Your Default Services, and select your preferred provider where that service supports default-player selection.
The exact labels or location can vary slightly with the Alexa app version and region. Spotify documents the same general path and allows Spotify to be selected as the default music service. Pandora provides comparable linking and default-service controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
After linking, you can name the provider in a command to avoid ambiguity:
Alexa, play relaxing music on Spotify.
Alexa, play artist radio on Pandora.
Alexa, play [station] on iHeartRadio.
Alexa, play [station] on TuneIn.
For general controls, try Alexa, pause
, Alexa, skip
, Alexa, turn the volume up
, or Alexa, what song is this?
Availability of individual commands depends on the service and its free-tier rules.
1. Amazon Music Free: the simplest option for Echo owners
Amazon’s U.S. free music option is the most direct choice if you own an Echo and do not want to create or link another music-service account. Amazon states that customers without Prime or Amazon Music Unlimited can listen to an ad-supported selection of playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices.

Alexa, play popular music.
Alexa, play jazz.
Alexa, play music for a dinner party.
Alexa, play a station.
Do not confuse this free tier with Amazon Music Unlimited. Amazon Music Free offers a curated, ad-supported selection; it is not the complete Unlimited catalog with unrestricted song-by-song playback. Amazon Music Unlimited is a paid subscription after any applicable trial or promotion.
Prime is also not the same as free. Prime members may receive Amazon Music benefits without a separate music charge, but Prime itself is a paid membership. Prime benefits and free-tier features can also change, so the relevant question is whether you want to add a paid music subscription—not whether every Amazon listening benefit costs nothing.
2. Spotify Free: good for mixes, playlists, and podcasts
Spotify Free works with Echo smart speakers through Alexa. It is useful when you want curated playlists, personalized radio, podcasts, or a music mix built around a requested artist, album, or track.
On Spotify Free, asking Alexa for a specific artist, album, or track does not necessarily mean Alexa will play that exact recording on demand. The free experience may return a music mix inspired by the request. Free listeners can also use playlist radio, curated genre and mood playlists, and personalized radio stations. Podcasts are available on demand.

Spotify Premium adds the features people often assume are included in “free” streaming: ad-free listening, unlimited skips, and the ability to ask for any track or album on demand. Therefore, a command such as Alexa, play [exact song] on Spotify
may not behave like unrestricted jukebox playback on a free account.
For the best free experience, try commands such as:
Alexa, play my Discover Weekly on Spotify.
Alexa, play a [genre] playlist on Spotify.
Alexa, play [artist] radio on Spotify.
Alexa, play my playlist radio on Spotify.
Alexa, play podcasts on Spotify.
3. Pandora Free: personalized stations rather than a full jukebox
Pandora Free is an ad-supported service built around stations. You can start a station from an artist, song, or genre, then use thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback to shape what plays.
To use it with Alexa, enable or link the Pandora skill through the Alexa app, sign in, and—if desired—select Pandora under the default music, stations, or podcasts service settings. Useful commands include:
Alexa, play [artist] radio on Pandora.
Alexa, skip.
Alexa, pause.
Alexa, what song is playing?
Alexa, turn the volume down.
Pandora Free should not be presented as unlimited on-demand playback. Pandora Premium, rather than the ad-supported tier, provides on-demand songs and albums and fully customizable playlists. Some additional skips or Premium access may be offered after listening to an advertisement, but those allowances are not the same as unrestricted playback.
4. iHeartRadio Free: live radio, artist stations, and podcasts
iHeartRadio’s free service includes music, thousands of radio stations, curated playlists, and podcasts. Alexa is among the platforms supported by the service.
This is a strong choice when you want to hear a live station, an artist station, local or format-based radio, or spoken audio without selecting every track yourself. Try:

As with Pandora and the free tiers of other services, iHeartRadio is better suited to radio and curated listening than to demanding any commercial song at any moment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. TuneIn Free: radio and podcasts from around the world
TuneIn is useful for FM, AM, and internet radio, including local stations, news, talk, and podcasts. TuneIn’s free service is available on Alexa-enabled devices and is preloaded on those devices according to TuneIn’s support information.
Try commands such as:
Alexa, play [station] on TuneIn.
Alexa, play news on TuneIn.
Alexa, play [city or station name] radio.
Alexa, play podcasts on TuneIn.
TuneIn Live is a separate paid service. Premium sports, premium news, and commercial-free music are not evidence that the basic TuneIn experience has become paid; they are features of the separate subscription.
6. Use Alexa as a Bluetooth speaker
Bluetooth is the fallback when the service, website, local music player, or audio app you want does not offer the Alexa integration you need. Pair a phone, tablet, or computer with the Echo, then play audio from the source device.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone, tablet, or computer.
- Say
Alexa, pair
, or open the Alexa app and select the Echo’s Bluetooth-device settings. - Choose the Alexa device from the source device’s Bluetooth list.
- Start playback in the source app, browser, or local music player.
This method does not give you a new free music catalog. It simply uses the Alexa speaker as the audio output for content already available on the connected device. It is useful for free web radio, apps without the desired Alexa skill, and personally owned music files, but playback usually has to be started and managed from the phone or computer.

An external Bluetooth speaker is optional if you want a different or louder audio setup; it is not necessary for free Alexa playback.
What “free” really means on Alexa
In this context, “free” normally means without a recurring music-service subscription. It does not necessarily mean ad-free, unlimited, or fully on demand.

- Stations and mixes: A free account may turn an exact artist, album, or song request into a station or related mix.
- Skip limits: Some free services restrict skips or provide extra skips only in particular circumstances.
- On-demand limits: Exact song and album playback is commonly reserved for a paid tier.
- Region restrictions: The same provider may offer different Alexa features in different countries.
The safest expectation is: you can listen at no additional monthly music cost, but you may have to accept ads, recommendations, stations, or limited control.

Troubleshooting free Alexa music playback
Alexa plays the wrong service
Say the provider’s name in the command, such as Alexa, play jazz on Spotify
. For a longer-term fix, open Alexa app → More → Settings → Music & Podcasts → Your Default Services and choose the intended provider where available.

Try an artist station, playlist, genre, mood, or radio request instead. The account may be on a free tier that replaces exact on-demand playback with a mix or station. If you need the exact track or album, check whether that feature belongs to the provider’s paid plan.
The service cannot be linked
Confirm that the Alexa account and music-service account are registered in the same supported region, that you completed the authorization screen, and that the skill or integration is available in the United States. Sign out and back in only after checking those basics; linking problems are often regional or account-related rather than a speaker fault.
Playback stops, contains ads, or skips are limited
Check which tier the account is using. Advertising, station playback, and skip limits are normal characteristics of several free services. They do not necessarily indicate that Alexa is malfunctioning.
Bluetooth pairing works, but Alexa does not control the music
That is expected in many Bluetooth setups. Pair the source device, select the Echo as its output, and start playback from the phone, tablet, or computer. Keep the devices within Bluetooth range and check that audio is not being sent to another connected device.
Can you listen to documentaries or spoken audio for free?
Yes. Podcasts are available through services such as Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn, subject to each service’s catalog and Alexa support. TuneIn and iHeartRadio are particularly useful for radio, news, talk, and other spoken programming. Bluetooth also lets you play documentary audio, a browser stream, or a personally owned file from another device when native Alexa playback is unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Alexa play music for free without Amazon Prime?
Yes. In the United States, Amazon says customers without Prime or Amazon Music Unlimited can use an ad-supported selection of playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. The selection is not the same as the full Amazon Music Unlimited catalog.
Can I ask Alexa to play any song for free?
Not reliably. Free tiers often return a station, playlist radio, or related mix instead of playing the exact song on demand. Spotify Premium and Pandora Premium, for example, reserve broader on-demand controls for paid plans.
Is Spotify free on Alexa?
Yes. Spotify Free can provide music mixes, playlist radio, curated playlists, personalized radio, and on-demand podcasts on Alexa. It does not provide the same ad-free, unlimited-skip, unrestricted on-demand experience as Spotify Premium.
Is Pandora free on Alexa?
Yes. Pandora Free supports ad-supported personalized stations based on artists, songs, and genres. Pandora Premium is required for full on-demand song and album playback and fully customizable playlists.
Can Alexa play radio without a subscription?
Yes. Free iHeartRadio and TuneIn options can play live, internet, local, news, and talk radio, depending on the station and region. TuneIn Live is a separate paid service for premium content.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: An Alexa device can play music and spoken audio without a paid music subscription. Start with Amazon Music Free for the simplest Echo setup, or link Spotify Free, Pandora Free, iHeartRadio, or TuneIn for different mixes, stations, playlists, radio, and podcasts. Expect ads and free-tier limits; do not expect every song or album to be available on demand without paying.
