The right way to remove someone depends on how they access your account. If they are an adult linked through Amazon Family, remove them from the household. If they are using your login on a TV, phone, streaming stick, console, or browser, deregister that device from Prime Video and Amazon. If they know your password—or you suspect unauthorized access—change the password, review account details, and enable two-step verification.
Removing someone from Amazon Family, signing a device out of Prime Video, and securing a compromised password are separate actions. You may need to complete more than one.
Choose the fix that matches the situation
| What is happening? | What to do |
|---|---|
| The person is an adult connected to your household with their own Amazon account. | Remove the adult from Amazon Family or Amazon Household. |
| The person is watching Prime Video through your account on a device. | Deregister the device in Prime Video’s Your Devices settings. |
| The person knows your password or may have accessed the account without permission. | Change the password, check account information and devices, then enable two-step verification. |

Remove an adult from Amazon Family or Household
Use this method when the person has their own Amazon account but is linked to yours through Amazon’s household-sharing feature. This removes the household relationship and shared benefits; it does not delete the other person’s independent Amazon account. Amazon’s current help instructions are documented on its UK support site, so the exact wording may differ in the U.S. or another marketplace. See Amazon’s official Amazon Family removal instructions.

- Sign in to the primary Prime account.
- Open Amazon Family, or search your Amazon account settings for Manage Your Amazon Family.
- Select the adult profile you want to remove.
- Choose Remove [adult profile name] from your Amazon Family.
- Confirm the removal.
Amazon says this option is available for adult profiles associated with your own account. After removal, the person loses access to shared Prime benefits and shared Family Library content. Amazon also says the removed adult must wait 12 months before joining a new Amazon Family.
Important: Removing an adult from Amazon Family may not be enough if that person also signed in directly with your Amazon password or left a device connected to your account. Continue with the device and password steps below when appropriate.
Sign someone out of Prime Video by deregistering their device
If someone is watching through your credentials rather than through an Amazon Family relationship, use Prime Video’s device-management controls. This is the relevant route for a television, Fire TV device, streaming stick, game console, phone, tablet, or browser-linked device.
- Open Prime Video and go to Settings.
- Select Your Devices.
- Find the device that should no longer have access.
- Select Deregister beside that device.
These steps reflect Amazon staff guidance in its Amazon forum device-management instructions. Remove the former roommate’s television or the old streaming stick, for example, but do not deregister devices you still use unless you are prepared to sign in again.

Device deregistration disconnects the selected device from Amazon digital content and services. It is not a replacement for changing your password when the other person knows it. A browser session or another active sign-in may continue to be a problem even if the device you recognize has been removed.
Deregister other Amazon devices remotely
If the unwanted access involves a Kindle, Fire tablet, Alexa device, Fire TV device, or Kindle or Audible app, use Amazon’s general device-management page as well as Prime Video’s device list where relevant.
- Sign in to Amazon.
- Open the Devices section of your account, or open Manage Your Content and Devices and select the Devices tab.
- Select the device you no longer want connected.
- Choose Deregister.
Amazon’s device support documentation explains that deregistration removes the device from the Amazon account and disconnects it from Amazon digital content and services. Amazon also documents remote deregistration through Manage Your Content and Devices when you no longer have the physical device.
For a lost or stolen Amazon device, deregistration prevents access to Amazon content and purchases through Amazon applications. It may not erase personal information already stored on the device, such as photos or sideloaded documents.

Change your Amazon password if it was shared
If a former partner, roommate, family member, or anyone else knows your password, deregistering devices alone is not sufficient. They could sign in again from another device or browser. Change the password from Amazon’s account security settings and use a password that is unique to Amazon.
- Change the Amazon password.
- Deregister unfamiliar devices in Prime Video and, where applicable, Amazon’s general Devices page.
- Check the account email address and phone number for unauthorized changes.
- Review payment methods and recent orders if you suspect unauthorized activity.
- Enable two-step verification.
Amazon’s security guidance warns against sharing passwords and recommends using a unique password. Read its official login and security guidance. A password change is particularly important for browser sessions, which may not be clearly represented by the Prime Video device list.
Turn on two-step verification
Two-step verification, also called multi-factor authentication, adds a verification step when someone tries to sign in. It does not remove a household member or deregister a device by itself, but it helps prevent someone with the old password from getting back in.
On Amazon.com, Amazon’s documented path is:
- Open Account & Lists > Your Account.
- Select Login & security.
- Under Advanced Security Settings, choose Edit.
- Select Get Started.
- Set up text message, voice-call, or authenticator-app verification.
- Configure the required backup verification method.
The available options and labels may vary by region. Amazon explains that once two-step verification is active, a person who has only the compromised password cannot complete a new sign-in using the password alone.

What to do if the person keeps getting back in
Persistent access after household removal, device deregistration, and a password change should be treated as a possible account-security incident.
- Confirm that the recovery email address belongs to you.
- Confirm that the recovery phone number belongs to you.
- Replace unfamiliar email addresses or phone numbers.
- Change the password again from a trusted device if necessary.
- Enable two-step verification and keep the backup method under your control.
- Review payment methods, orders, and other account changes.
- Contact Amazon Customer Service through the signed-in account.
Never give the other person a verification code. If you believe your computer itself may be compromised, secure the computer and your email account as well; access to your email or phone can allow someone to interfere with Amazon account recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Only removing the household adult: this does not necessarily sign out devices where your password was used.
- Only deregistering a television: the person may still have access through a phone, browser, console, or another device.
- Changing the password but ignoring recovery details: an unauthorized email address or phone number can undermine account recovery.
- Assuming deregistration deletes personal data: Amazon says personal information stored locally on a lost device may remain.
- Deregistering every device without checking: you may sign out your own televisions, tablets, or readers and need to authenticate them again.
- Confusing household removal with account deletion: removing an adult from Amazon Family removes the shared relationship; it does not destroy that person’s separate Amazon account.
The safest sequence for a former partner or roommate
For a person who previously shared your home or knew your credentials, complete the following sequence:
- Change the Amazon password first.
- Remove the person from Amazon Family or Household if they are listed there.
- Deregister their Prime Video device and any other Amazon devices you do not recognize.
- Check your email address, phone number, payment methods, and recent orders.
- Enable two-step verification with a phone, authenticator app, or other method you control.
- Sign back in only on the devices you still use.
This combination addresses the household relationship, existing device connections, and the underlying credential problem rather than treating them as one issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does removing someone from Amazon Household delete their Amazon account?
No. Removing an adult from Amazon Family or Household removes the linked household relationship and shared benefits. It does not delete the person’s independent Amazon account. Amazon says the removed adult loses shared Family Library access and must wait 12 months before joining a new Amazon Family.
Can I sign out of all devices on Amazon Prime?
You can deregister devices through Prime Video’s Settings > Your Devices area and through Amazon’s general Devices or Manage Your Content and Devices pages. If someone knows your password, also change it because browser sessions or other devices may not be fully addressed by deregistration alone.
Will changing my Amazon password remove someone from Amazon Family?
No. A password change protects future sign-ins but does not remove an adult household relationship. Remove the adult separately through Amazon Family or Amazon Household, then review and deregister devices.
What if I do not recognize the email address or phone number on my Amazon account?
Treat it as a possible account compromise. Secure the account from a trusted device, replace unauthorized recovery details, change the password, enable two-step verification, review orders and payment methods, and contact Amazon Customer Service through the signed-in account.
The Bottom Line
To kick someone off Amazon Prime completely: remove them from Amazon Family if they are a linked adult, deregister their Prime Video and Amazon devices, then change your password and enable two-step verification if they ever knew your credentials. Removing the household member alone does not secure a shared login, and deregistering a device alone does not stop someone who can sign in again.
