To keep video playing while OBS restarts, use an independent backup encoder or relay that can take over the YouTube live event. A reusable stream key saves encoder configuration, but it does not keep video flowing when OBS stops. Test the backup handoff on your actual stream; YouTube does not promise that every restart will be seamless or that viewers will avoid buffering or interruption.
Why restarting OBS can interrupt a 24/7 stream
OBS is the encoder sending video and audio to YouTube. When its process stops, that outgoing feed stops too. Reopening OBS with the same stream key may restore the encoder connection, but the key alone cannot supply video during the gap or guarantee what viewers see.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (Manage live stream settings). Treat the key as sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
Set up and test a backup handoff
- Confirm the YouTube event and encoder settings. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and check the intended event and stream key. In OBS, verify that the intended YouTube server/stream URL and key are configured. Use a custom stream key if you need one that can be reused.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Check the event’s settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube says these options let the encoder start or stop the stream; they do not create a fallback feed.
- Choose a genuinely independent backup path. Arrange a second encoder or relay that can continue sending a feed while the OBS process you are restarting is unavailable. A second encoder running on the same computer may fail along with OBS or the computer, so assess what failures the backup is meant to cover.
- Verify the handoff with the real configuration. YouTube’s failover test is to stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and check that the player rolls over to the backup. Confirm that the backup can take over the intended YouTube live event; do not assume different encoder or relay combinations behave identically. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Before relying on the setup, test with representative audio and motion. Monitor the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and messages, and view the public or unlisted watch page from another device and network.
What to expect during the restart
A successful test demonstrates how your particular backup behaves; it does not establish a universal YouTube reconnect grace period or guarantee that every viewer stays connected. YouTube’s failover guidance asks creators to check that the player rolls over to the backup, not that every setup preserves the same watch-page experience without interruption.

Keep the backup available for the entire period OBS is offline, and verify that it sends the intended picture and sound. A backup that depends on the same stopped process cannot cover that process’s restart.
Troubleshoot a failed feed or handoff
- The backup does not take over: Check that it is configured for the intended YouTube event and can send while OBS is stopped. Repeat the failover test and watch the YouTube player, rather than relying only on encoder status.
- YouTube shows an error or unhealthy stream: Inspect encoder output and Live Control Room messages, check CPU load, and test the outbound connection. YouTube also recommends updating encoder software when troubleshooting (Troubleshoot live streaming issues).
- OBS reconnects but viewers saw a gap: Reconnection restores a feed; it does not prove that viewers experienced uninterrupted playback. Test the public or unlisted player from another network and decide whether a separate backup is needed for the interruption you observed.
- The event was intentionally ended: YouTube instructs creators to end the stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Its encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a guarantee of restart recovery or of how a 24/7 event will be handled (Create a live stream with an encoder).
