Give each YouTube playlist its own encoder process, configuration, schedule, and logs. Then define either non-overlapping run windows with a handoff margin or two independent concurrent jobs, and verify that your VPS can handle both if they run together. A shared server does not require shared process control: changing or stopping one job should never stop the other.
Separate the two streams before scheduling them
Think of each playlist as a separate job on the VPS, even when both belong to the same YouTube channel. Keep each job’s media list, event settings, start and stop rules, working directory, and logs distinct. Names such as playlist-a and playlist-b make it easier to start, stop, inspect, and recover one stream without affecting the other.
YouTube’s encoder workflow connects an encoder to a particular event using that event’s stream URL and stream key. Associate each job’s configuration with its intended event, and treat the key as a credential: restrict access to its configuration file and avoid exposing it in shared logs. The exact service definitions and commands depend on the VPS operating system and the encoder you choose. YouTube does not require a particular Linux scheduler or service manager; using separately named services or scheduler entries is an operational approach, not a YouTube-mandated setup.

Choose whether the schedules take turns or run together
For alternating schedules
Write down explicit start and end times for both jobs, preferably in UTC so that daylight-saving changes or differing local time zones do not create surprises. Leave a handoff margin between the outgoing stream ending and the next event starting. That gives the first encoder time to stop cleanly and the next event time to become ready.
Keep each schedule’s stop action scoped to its own service or process. Avoid broad stop or restart commands that could terminate both encoders when only one playlist’s window changes. If a schedule is edited, check both jobs’ windows afterward for an accidental overlap or gap.

For simultaneous schedules
Run two independent encoder jobs and monitor their combined resource use. Both streams consume VPS CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network capacity; the available guidance does not establish a universal VPS sizing formula. Check the actual load while both outputs are active rather than assuming that capacity for one stream is sufficient for two.
Prepare and validate each playlist
If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a sequence of files, the files need compatible stream layouts and time bases. The demuxer uses each file’s duration to adjust timestamps for the next one; inaccurate duration information can therefore cause timestamp problems or playback artifacts. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and validate each playlist independently before relying on its schedule.

Keep a separate manifest or playlist file for each feed. Confirm that every referenced media file is present and readable by the account that runs that job. A valid playlist for one stream does not verify the other stream’s file paths or media compatibility.
Test both YouTube events before automating them
- Create or schedule each event in YouTube and identify the stream URL and key intended for that event.
- Enter the matching URL and key in the corresponding encoder configuration. Check the association before starting; do not assume the two jobs share identical event settings.
- Start and test each encoder separately. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview, verify that the stream is accessible, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Test the planned handoff if the streams take turns, or run both together long enough to inspect VPS load if they are concurrent.
- Only after those checks, enable the independent schedules and confirm that each starts and stops at its intended time.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing the setup and checking the preview and stream quality. Apply those checks to each output, not just the first one. A YouTube stream under 12 hours is automatically archived, but that archive rule does not keep an encoder process running indefinitely. See YouTube’s live encoder instructions.

Check YouTube’s active-stream limits
YouTube currently documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. Two jobs fit within those counts only if other active streams have not used the remaining capacity. YouTube says an additional stream cannot start after either limit is reached. Check the active count and event/key configuration in Live Control Room. The cited guidance does not say that every pair of scheduled streams must use different keys. Keep separate logs and check process state, exit status, VPS resource use, and each stream’s public watch page. Decide in advance whether a failure should restart only the affected encoder or alert an operator. Automatic restarts can help recover a failed process, but they should not be configured in a way that launches a second copy of the same job or disturbs the other stream.

- Both streams start at once when they should take turns: Compare the two schedules, their time zones, and any daylight-saving assumptions. Correct the windows and add a handoff margin.
- Stopping one stream also stops the other: Check whether both schedules target a shared process, service name, or broad stop command. Give each job a distinct process definition and scope control actions to that job.
- An event does not receive its encoder: Verify that the job uses the intended event’s stream URL and key, and check the event’s state and active-stream limits in Live Control Room.
- The stream fails to start or the playlist breaks partway through: Inspect that job’s logs and manifest, check file paths and access permissions, and validate the playlist’s file compatibility and duration information.
- Both streams degrade when run together: Inspect CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use while both are active. The available sources do not specify a capacity threshold; adjust the workload or VPS resources based on observed constraints.
- The process is running but viewers cannot watch: Check the event preview and public watch page, along with the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream-quality indicators.
