Use a launcher to read shared defaults and per-stream settings, then start one FFmpeg process for each independent stream. If several destinations need the same encoded program, use FFmpeg’s tee muxer instead.
What one FFmpeg config file can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg takes inputs, outputs, mappings, and options on the command line. Many options apply to the next input or output, so their order matters. Its documentation describes that command-line model, not a universal file format for managing many separate, continuous jobs. A YAML or JSON manifest is therefore an application-level control file: your launcher reads it and builds the FFmpeg command for each stream. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
For independent channels or programs, run a separate FFmpeg process for each stream. That gives each job its own input, maps, encoding settings, YouTube destination and restart behavior. One process is not automatically more reliable or more efficient just because it is controlled by one file.
Choose between separate processes and tee

The tee muxer is for distributing one feed, not scheduling unrelated videos or independently controlling several channel programs. FFmpeg’s tee documentation says it cannot automatically select streams, so explicitly map audio and video. Depending on the destinations, you may also need to specify output formats and escape characters in the tee output string. See FFmpeg’s tee muxer documentation.

Design a manifest for independent streams
Keep values that are genuinely shared in one defaults section and put differences in each stream’s entry. The format is your choice; the example below is conceptual YAML for a launcher to interpret, not syntax FFmpeg can read directly.

frame_rate: 25Use the actual server URL and stream key assigned to each YouTube event. The launcher should resolve the key reference through an environment variable or secrets store rather than storing the secret in source control. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; if a key is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Build the launcher and start each job
- Validate entries before launching. Require a unique name, readable input, YouTube server URL, resolvable key reference, and explicit audio/video maps. Fail clearly if a required field is missing rather than starting a partial stream.
- Expand each entry into its own command. Select that row’s input and maps, apply common encoder defaults, then apply only the row’s overrides. FFmpeg option placement is significant: input options belong before the relevant input, and output options before the output they configure. Use the official FFmpeg command-line documentation when building the argument order.
- Keep credentials out of logs and command examples. Pass secrets using a deployment-appropriate mechanism and restrict access to the process environment, configuration and logs.
- Write separate logs and process IDs. Include the stream name and timestamp in each log path so you can tell which job failed without mixing output from several channels.
- Run under a supervisor. A service manager or small supervisor can restart a process that exits. Choose a deliberate backoff rather than restarting continuously in a tight loop; the suitable policy depends on the operating system and deployment.
- Test with a non-public event first. Confirm the video and audio arrive, the expected maps are selected, the picture and sound are stable, and the launcher can stop and restart that job cleanly.
These launcher and supervisor choices are implementation recommendations, not requirements prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube. The right manifest format, secrets mechanism and process manager depend on where you run the jobs.
Set quality and capacity for the real workload
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the intended format. Those values should match the actual content and the available sustained upload capacity; there is no single setting that fits every stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring output options.

- Measure representative content, including motion and audio, rather than judging a static test frame.
- Add the outgoing bitrates of all concurrent streams and leave capacity headroom. A connection that can carry one stream may not sustain several at once.
- Check encoding load on the machine running FFmpeg. The number of jobs YouTube permits does not establish how many your hardware can encode.
- If recording locally as well as streaming, check storage growth and plan rotation or segmentation so a long-running archive does not fill the disk.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance is operational advice, not a performance guarantee for a particular computer or connection. See YouTube’s live-streaming checklist.
Check YouTube’s concurrent-stream limits
YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, says a channel can have 10 active streams and a stream key can have 3 active streams at once; both limits apply concurrently. These are YouTube-side limits, not a promise that your machine, encoder or uplink can sustain that many streams. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.

Plan separately for continuous streaming and a complete archive
A stream that stays live for 24 hours or longer is not necessarily archived as one complete video. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; one exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the full program matters, arrange local recording and segmentation or divide the broadcast into planned events. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects an option or uses the wrong setting: Check argument order and whether the option is scoped to the intended input or output. Compare the generated command with FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
- Audio or video is missing: Inspect the input’s streams and correct the explicit
-mapselections. Do not rely on tee to select streams automatically. - YouTube does not accept the feed: Verify that the event’s server URL and key are paired correctly, the event is ready to receive the feed, and the key has not been reset or exposed. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health.
- Several streams become unstable together: Compare their aggregate outgoing bitrate with measured upload capacity and check encoder load. Reduce the workload or adjust quality to fit available capacity.
- A job exits and stays offline: Read that job’s separate log, correct the underlying error, and verify the supervisor’s restart policy. A restart loop cannot fix invalid inputs, expired credentials or insufficient resources.
- Local recordings stop unexpectedly: Check available disk space and recording rotation. A 24/7 live event should not depend on one ever-growing local file.
