To keep a YouTube podcast in the intended episode order, set its Default Video Order in YouTube Studio: open Content → Podcasts, edit the podcast, choose the right order, and save. Use newest to oldest for episodes that can be watched independently; use oldest to newest for a series listeners should follow from the beginning.
These steps cover a podcast playlist kept up to date with new episodes. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that the podcast-order setting also controls a playlist used during an active livestream.
Choose the order that fits the show

YouTube recommends newest-to-oldest for episodic podcasts and oldest-to-newest for serial podcasts. Make the choice based on how the audience should listen, rather than simply on which episode was uploaded most recently. Set a podcast’s default video order
- Decide whether the show is episodic or serial, and write down the order listeners should see.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content → Podcasts.
- Open the podcast for editing, find Default Video Order, and select the intended order.
- Save, then check the podcast display to confirm it matches the intended listening sequence.
- When adding episodes in batches, revisit the order and verify the new display. This is a useful editorial check; YouTube’s guidance does not promise a particular automatic ordering behavior for every later upload.
YouTube defines a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. The playlist should contain full-length episodes in the order people should consume them. Keep podcast playlists separate from other content
Use the podcast playlist for full episodes. YouTube advises against applying podcast features to separate playlists for seasons or clips. Shorts created to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music, according to YouTube’s podcast setup guidance. [YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio]
If the playlist is a YouTube Show
For YouTube Shows, manually specified playlist order determines assigned episode numbers. Without manual ordering, YouTube assigns numbers by publication date from oldest to newest. If you mean an ordinary playlist
For a playlist that is not set up as a podcast, use the saved playlist editing workflow in Studio. On a computer, playlist creation includes a video arrangement choice, and the saved playlist can be reordered by dragging videos up or down. Do not confuse this with dragging items in the watch-page playlist panel: that changes the viewer-side order temporarily and should not be relied on to preserve the channel’s intended order.
