Prevent clipping by checking the podcast’s playback level in the same audio chain you’ll use for the stream, testing a representative episode before going live, and monitoring the stream’s preview and live output. YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies audio delivery formats and settings, but it does not set a clipping-prevention loudness target or limiter threshold.
What YouTube’s audio settings do—and do not—tell you
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps for stereo. These are delivery and encoding settings, not a guarantee that the program audio will avoid clipping. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance does not specify an integrated loudness target, true-peak ceiling, or limiter threshold for podcast playback.
Clipping is a problem in the audio signal reaching the encoder: setting the encoder to a supported format or bitrate cannot, by itself, correct an overloaded playback or mixing stage. Treat program level and encoder configuration as separate checks.
Test the podcast through the actual stream chain
- Use a representative episode. Choose audio with the kinds of speech, music, and loud passages that will occur in the always-on stream.
- Play it through the intended route. Use the same player, player gain, mixer or interface, and encoder configuration planned for the live stream. A test should resemble the real broadcast, including its audio and movement. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the actual stream.
- Listen for overload in the result. Check the audio coming through the stream preview or test output, rather than relying only on how the source file sounds on its own.
- Adjust the stage that is overloading. If distortion appears, inspect the playback gain and each stage in the signal path. Change one stage at a time and test again so you can identify what resolves the issue.
Preview before going live and monitor the broadcast
Use the Live Control Room preview to check the stream before starting it, and continue monitoring audio quality while it is live. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and streaming tips cover testing and monitoring. A clean file or successful encoder connection does not prove that the full playback chain is clean.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an always-on channel, repeat the test whenever you change the episode source, player gain, mixer or interface, or encoder configuration. This is a practical way to apply YouTube’s testing and monitoring guidance, not a schedule YouTube mandates.
Should you add a limiter?
An external limiter or compressor/limiter may help if it fits your existing signal chain, but it is optional. YouTube’s documentation recognizes encoder workflows that use external audio hardware; it does not prescribe a processor, model, setting, or purchase. The cited guidance also does not provide a numeric limiter ceiling, attack or release setting, or a click-by-click limiter recipe. Avoid treating any such number as an official YouTube clipping standard.

Before adding hardware or changing the chain, compare the practical options: whether the tool fits the route from playback to encoder, whether testing and monitoring show the problem is controlled, and whether the extra setup is worthwhile for the channel. YouTube does not compare processor brands or establish device compatibility in the cited guidance.
Troubleshooting clipping in an always-on stream
- The episode sounds clean by itself, but distorted in the stream: Test through the full intended route. Check player gain and the intervening mixer, interface, or encoder path; the source file alone does not test those stages.
- A test passed, but a later episode clips: Treat the new episode as a changed source. Test it through the same chain before it becomes part of the continuous broadcast.
- Audio changed after equipment or settings were adjusted: Re-test after a change to player gain, mixer or interface, or encoder configuration.
- You want a YouTube-approved limiter number: The cited YouTube pages do not publish one. Do not infer a clipping threshold from the 44.1 kHz or 128 kbps encoding recommendations.
- You cannot tell whether a processor is helping: Compare the stream output during representative playback and keep monitoring; the guidance does not establish a specific device or setting as a universal fix.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Check and correct episode audio before uploading: cloud playback does not replace the clipping checks above.
