Do not choose Sign out, and do not stop, deallocate, or restart the VM. Disconnecting your desktop session is not the same as ending the Windows session or shutting down the machine.
What should happen when you disconnect?
In a conventional Windows VM session, closing the RDP client ordinarily disconnects your view of the desktop while leaving the Windows session—and its running applications—available to reconnect. That lets OBS continue running, provided the VM stays powered on and the session is not ended by policy or another event.
Keep these states distinct:
| Action or state | What it means for OBS |
|---|---|
| RDP client disconnected | The remote desktop client is no longer showing or controlling the session. The disconnected session may remain available for reconnection. |
| Windows signed out | The user session ends. Do not sign out if you are relying on the current interactive OBS process. |
| VM stopped, deallocated, or restarted | Windows and its processes stop or restart; OBS cannot keep streaming through that event. |
| OBS open but stream disconnected | The application may still be running while its connection to the streaming ingest server is unhealthy. Diagnose the stream path separately. |
Microsoft documents reconnection to disconnected remote sessions, but session locking and related behavior vary by connection type, authentication, and policy. In particular, Azure Virtual Desktop behavior can differ between Microsoft Entra single sign-on and legacy authentication, and administrators can configure policy. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop session-lock guidance explains the configuration.
Disconnect from RDP without signing out
- Start OBS and verify the stream while connected. Check the intended scene, sources, audio, and streaming status before closing the desktop client.
- Close or disconnect the RDP client. Use the client’s close or disconnect action. Do not select Sign out in Windows or a remote-session menu.
- Leave the Azure VM running. A client disconnect does not power off the VM. Conversely, stopping or deallocating the VM prevents OBS from continuing to execute.
- Reconnect to the same VM and account when you need to check. Look for the existing session and OBS process rather than signing in through a flow that ends the previous session.
The precise controls depend on how you connect: ordinary RDP to an Azure VM, Azure Virtual Desktop, or an Entra-authenticated Remote PC connection are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s instructions for connecting to a Remote PC with Microsoft Entra single sign-on describe that authentication route; the applicable session defaults may differ from conventional VM RDP.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the session locks or ends when you disconnect
First identify the connection type and ask whether an organization policy or VM schedule is ending or locking the session. For Azure Virtual Desktop, session-lock behavior can depend on authentication mode and host policy; changes may be managed through Intune or Group Policy and may require a session-host restart. If the host is organization-managed, consult its administrator rather than changing managed policy yourself.
If the session is merely locked, reconnect and check whether OBS remains open. A lock is not the same as a sign-out, though policy or the particular setup may affect what happens. Microsoft’s session-lock documentation covers Azure Virtual Desktop behavior; do not assume its defaults apply to every Azure VM.

OBS launch options are not session persistence
OBS supports launch parameters including --startstreaming to begin streaming when OBS launches and --minimize-to-tray to start minimized. These can help with a planned launch flow, such as after a restart, but they do not keep a signed-out user’s existing process alive, prevent the VM from stopping, or guarantee that a stream survives a network failure. See the OBS launch parameters documentation.
Troubleshoot the failure you actually see
OBS closed or the desktop session disappeared
- Reconnect to the same VM and account; determine whether the prior Windows session is still available.
- Confirm that you disconnected the RDP client rather than choosing Sign out.
- Check whether the VM restarted, stopped, or was deallocated, including any configured power schedule.
- If you use Azure Virtual Desktop or an Entra-authenticated connection, check the relevant session behavior and host policy with the administrator.
OBS is open, but YouTube says the stream ended or has connection trouble
Treat this as a streaming-network problem, not automatically as an RDP problem. OBS lists an unstable or insufficient connection to the ingest server, bitrate limits, VPN interference, and security software as possible causes. Check OBS’s stream status and logs, the VM’s network path, VPN use, and firewall or security software; change one factor at a time. The OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide provides further steps.

RDP’s automatic reconnection property controls whether the local client retries its remote desktop connection after a drop; it does not keep OBS alive or guarantee that the broadcast remained healthy. Microsoft’s supported RDP properties describes that setting.
Sources or audio change after disconnecting
If the broadcast changes when you disconnect, check whether an OBS source depends on a display, audio device, or other resource created by the remote session. The exact cause depends on the VM, Windows session, and sources in use; the supplied materials do not establish one universal setting or fix. Compare the source state before and after disconnecting, and test changes while you can still monitor the stream.

RDP will not reconnect
Separate inability to reconnect from whether OBS continued running. Check the VM’s power state and the connection type, then use Microsoft’s Azure RDP troubleshooting guidance for connection diagnostics.
