Neither provider is a proven winner for 24/7 YouTube streaming. DigitalOcean has a CPU-Optimized Droplet family explicitly marketed for video and live-streaming workloads, with published transfer allowances and overage pricing. Contabo publishes a VPS/VDS port-speed range and says there is no default bandwidth limit, subject to its fair-use policy. Those facts help frame a plan comparison, but they do not establish which service will deliver better uptime or stream performance for your configuration.
For a documentary channel, the deciding questions are whether your server must encode video, how much outbound data your stream uses, and whether the selected plan’s CPU, transfer terms and sustained network performance fit the workload. If you want a managed cloud loop rather than operating a VPS, StreamNeo is another option: it keeps uploaded videos streaming to YouTube without leaving a computer on.
Quick comparison
| Factor | Contabo | DigitalOcean |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming-relevant compute | The cited Contabo material describes VPS/VDS network terms, not a streaming-specific compute plan or a matched CPU configuration. | DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU machines for CPU-bound work including video and live streaming. |
| Transfer and network terms | Contabo says there is no default bandwidth limit for VPS/VDS/dedicated servers, subject to fair use. Its VPS/VDS port-speed range is 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps; this range does not guarantee sustained speed for a particular plan. | Droplet plans have included outbound transfer allowances. Excess outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB, and team transfer is pooled. |
| Example listed plan | A comparable Contabo plan price and allowance were not established in the cited material. | DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists a 2-vCPU, 4-GiB CPU-Optimized Droplet with 4,000 GiB transfer at $42/month. This is a published list price, not a guaranteed checkout quote or performance benchmark; verify current pricing. |
| Head-to-head reliability | No matched uptime, dropped-frame or sustained-encoding comparison establishes a winner. Test the exact configuration and operating region you intend to use. | |
DigitalOcean is the more directly documented fit if you need dedicated CPU for continuous encoding. Contabo’s published traffic terms may be attractive for a transfer-heavy workload, but the fair-use qualification and absence of a matched plan comparison matter. Neither point proves lower total cost or better stream stability in practice.
Start with the stream workload, not the VPS brand
Forwarding an already encoded feed
If your video is already encoded and the server only sends it to YouTube, CPU demand is generally a different problem from encoding the source on the VPS. You still need enough sustained network throughput, transfer allowance, storage and a process that can restart or reconnect. This is a workload distinction, not a provider benchmark: the cited provider sources do not measure a specific forwarding setup.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encoding or transcoding on the VPS
If the VPS must encode or transcode continuously, CPU capacity becomes central. Codec, resolution and frame rate all affect the workload. DigitalOcean specifically markets its CPU-Optimized Droplets for CPU-bound video and live-streaming uses, but that description does not show how a particular Droplet will perform with your source. Run a representative test before committing to a long-running setup.
Estimate outbound transfer for a continuous stream
Use the encoder’s actual total bitrate and planned operating time to estimate monthly outbound data. At constant bitrate, data use grows with runtime; include audio, protocol overhead, reconnect behavior and other outbound services. The following examples use YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates as reference points, not measurements of provider performance:

- 1080p60 AV1/H.265: YouTube recommends 12 Mbps.
YouTube’s settings vary by codec and frame rate; check its current encoder guidance for the specific stream. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee that either provider’s network will sustain it end to end.
Check DigitalOcean’s pooled allowance
Each Droplet plan has a plan-specific outbound transfer allowance. DigitalOcean pools team transfer usage, inbound transfer is free, and accrued transfer does not roll over. Outbound usage beyond the allowance is charged at $0.01/GiB under the cited 2026 documentation. When estimating a stream, account for other Droplets using the same pool and verify the current allowance and account terms before choosing a plan.

Read Contabo’s traffic terms with the qualification attached
Contabo states: “There is no default bandwidth limit applied to our servers (VPS, VDS, DS); only our fair usage policy applies.” The same support guidance reserves discretion to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Its stated 100 Mbps–1 Gbps VPS/VDS port range is a product-family range, not a promise that a selected VPS will continuously deliver a chosen bitrate.
Compare the exact plans before you deploy
- Decide whether the VPS encodes. Document the source format, target codec, resolution and frame rate. Size CPU for continuous encoding only if that work happens on the server.
- Calculate monthly outbound data. Use the planned bitrate and runtime, then allow for audio and overhead. Include other outbound workloads and reconnects rather than treating the video bitrate as the full account total.
- Verify plan-level transfer terms. For DigitalOcean, confirm the selected Droplet’s current allowance, pooled usage and excess-transfer price. For Contabo, read the current fair-use policy and confirm the chosen plan’s terms.
- Check sustained throughput and route. A port-speed figure or transfer allowance is not a test of end-to-end stream stability. Test from the intended server region to YouTube’s ingest path.
- Plan monitoring and recovery. Check whether your streaming process detects disconnects, reconnects and alerts you when the broadcast is no longer healthy. Provider documentation cited here does not establish comparative recovery behavior.
- Compare current total cost. Include the appropriate CPU plan, transfer overage exposure and any other resources you need. DigitalOcean’s listed example is not a quote for every region or checkout; the cited evidence does not provide a comparable Contabo price.
Configure YouTube ingest with the right settings
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key; you configure the encoder with those values. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Select the resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder according to YouTube’s current settings for your codec, then test the stream before relying on it continuously. Keep the stream key private and use YouTube’s live control room to confirm that the incoming feed is healthy.

For an always-on channel, the stream must also be eligible under YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright and monetization rules. Use material you have rights to stream, and do not assume that permission to upload a film, documentary or soundtrack automatically includes permission to rebroadcast it continuously. Reused-content monetization review is separate from whether a stream technically connects; check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content.

The provider and platform documentation cited here establishes product descriptions, transfer terms and encoder guidance. It does not provide a controlled comparison of Contabo and DigitalOcean for 24/7 YouTube uptime, dropped frames, sustained CPU encoding or route quality. Region, support response and exact plan availability also need checking for the deployment you are considering. Treat a provider choice as something to validate with a representative stream, not an uptime conclusion inferred from a port range or plan label.
