OBS may stay open after you disconnect from a Windows VPS yet stop capturing video or audio. Disconnecting Remote Desktop is different from signing out: community reports describe the remote session’s virtual display or audio devices disappearing, which can leave OBS running without a usable source. Whether that happens depends on the host and capture setup; it is not an established behavior guaranteed for every Windows VPS.
First identify what stopped
Before disconnecting, note whether OBS is still open and whether its preview is updating. After reconnecting, check the preview, the audio mixer, and the properties of the affected capture source. Video capture and desktop audio can fail separately: OBS might remain connected to the streaming service while a screen capture freezes, or it might keep video while audio disappears. These patterns are described in OBS forum discussions, not in a current Microsoft specification of VPS behavior.
- If OBS has exited, investigate why the process or Windows session ended.
- If OBS remains open but the preview freezes, investigate display and capture-device continuity.
- If video continues but the mixer no longer shows audio, investigate the audio device path.
- If OBS reports dropped frames or loses its connection to the ingest server, investigate network delivery separately.
Why disconnecting Remote Desktop can affect OBS
OBS captures sources provided by Windows and the host environment; it does not make a display or audio device persist when that device is no longer available. OBS forum users have reported frozen window or screen capture and missing desktop audio after disconnecting RDP. In those cases, the application may still be running even though a source has stopped producing usable output.
The distinction between a physical computer and a hosted virtual machine matters. Forum contributors describe remote-control software such as VNC as a way to mirror an existing console session on a physical machine with persistent display, GPU, and audio hardware. That is not a substitute for hardware a VPS does not have. Ask the hosting provider what GPU, display, and audio devices are available, and whether they remain present outside an active RDP session.

Test the setup that matches your host
Hosted Windows VPS
- Ask the provider whether the VPS has a persistent GPU or display device and an audio device that remain available after the RDP session disconnects.
- Confirm whether OBS is expected to capture an interactive desktop, a specific application window, or only play prerecorded material. These workflows have different source requirements.
- Run a short test stream or recording. Check the preview and audio mixer before disconnecting, then reconnect and check whether the image, audio, or both stopped.
- If a source disappears, ask the provider about a configuration that preserves the required device path. Do not assume that changing remote-control software creates missing virtual hardware.
Physical Windows computer with persistent hardware
If OBS runs on a physical machine with its own display, GPU, and audio path, test a remote-control tool that mirrors the existing console session rather than relying on an RDP session that changes the devices visible to the application. OBS forum contributors cite VNC as one example, not a guarantee for every product or configuration. Verify the exact capture and audio sources after disconnecting the remote viewer.
Separate source failures from network failures
A frozen preview or silent mixer points toward a capture or device-continuity problem. Dropped frames or an ingest disconnection point toward network delivery. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its network checks—such as reviewing the ingest choice, bitrate, network settings, and interfering software—address that class of failure; they will not restore a display or audio device that vanished when RDP disconnected.

If the goal is an unattended video playlist
If you want to broadcast prerecorded videos or a playlist rather than capture an interactive desktop, consider whether OBS is the right workflow. In an OBS forum thread, moderator FerretBomb advised readers seeking automated 24/7 use to investigate “video jukebox” RTMP servers such as Red5. That is a high-level suggestion from the thread, not a current product endorsement or a tested migration guide; check any alternative’s present capabilities and requirements before choosing it.
